SPECIAL EVENTS<br />

• Income-Tax-Preparation Assistance - Mondays,<br />

Thursdays, Saturdays through <strong>April</strong><br />

16th, 10 AM-1 PM. Representatives from the<br />

AARP will provide free income-tax-preparation<br />

assistance for low-income taxpayers. Patrons<br />

should bring the following information to the<br />

session if possible: photo ID; Social Security<br />

card(s) for self, spouse and all dependents;<br />

last year’s tax return; W-2, 1099s and any other<br />

compensation received in 2017; unemployment<br />

compensation statements; and any other<br />

documents that are necessary to complete<br />

your return. This service is free and open to<br />

the public on a first-come, first-served basis.<br />

Income-tax forms will no longer be available at<br />

the libraries, but patrons may use the libraries’<br />

computers and printers to download and print<br />

out the forms from the IRS website, www.irs.<br />

gov, during regular library hours. A library card<br />

is needed to use the printers and the cost to<br />

print is 10¢ per black-and-white page.<br />

• The Arts of Russell Autrey: Artist, Photographer,<br />

Raconteur Exhibit Opening-Day Reception<br />

- Sunday, <strong>April</strong> 8th, 2-4 PM, Bohachevsky<br />

Gallery. The exhibit, which showcases Autrey’s<br />

art and storytelling skills as well as his photography,<br />

will be on display through May 30th.<br />

Featuring Autrey’s varied artistic talents in ink<br />

drawings and photographs, the exhibit will also<br />

showcase his storytelling talent, as he describes<br />

some of his art pieces. A long-time photojournalist,<br />

Autrey is best known for his photographs<br />

that caught snippets of the daily lives of Fort<br />

Bend County residents for more than 25 years,<br />

from 1983 until his retirement in 2009. Autrey’s<br />

exhibit will be included in FotoFest Fort Bend, in<br />

partnership with FotoFest International’s <strong>2018</strong><br />

Biennial, a prestigious collection of exhibitions<br />

throughout the Houston area.<br />

• Resumé Workshop - Tuesday, <strong>April</strong> 10th, 2<br />

PM, Computer Lab. Learn the basics of putting<br />

together a resumé. Those attending this<br />

informal program will receive one-one-one<br />

help formatting a resumé. For assistance on<br />

a pre-existing resumé, please have a digital<br />

copy available on a USB flashdrive, saved to<br />

the cloud or have access to it via email. Registration<br />

required.<br />

• The Texas Revolution - Tuesday, <strong>April</strong> 10th,<br />

7 PM, Meeting Room. Dr. Nicholas Cox, a U.S.<br />

History professor at Houston Community<br />

College, will discuss the events leading up to<br />

the Texas Revolution and the historic Battle of<br />

San Jacinto, which took place 181 years ago on<br />

<strong>April</strong> 21, 1836. Learn how the battle transpired<br />

that day, its significance in the Texas revolution<br />

and its impact on Texas history.<br />

• Family-History Research: Reservations are<br />

required.<br />

Ancestral Veterans of the War of 1812 - Saturday,<br />

<strong>April</strong> 14th, 10 AM, Computer Lab.<br />

• Apollo-To the Moon - Saturday, <strong>April</strong> 14th,<br />

10:30 AM, Meeting Room. Retired NASA physicist<br />

F. Don Cooper will share his experiences<br />

creating the technology that helped launch<br />

Apollo 11 in 1969 and the efforts that his team<br />

went through to successfully bring the Apollo<br />

13 crew home safely in 1970. Cooper will also<br />

discuss the history of U.S. rockets and his role<br />

in designing the Saturn V ascent guidance and<br />

trans-lunar targeting equations that would<br />

help make space travel possible.<br />

• OPEN-MIC NIGHT - Wednesday, <strong>April</strong> 18th,<br />

6 PM, Meeting Room. Open-Mic Night is a<br />

casual event for amateur performers to take<br />

the stage and express themselves! Step into<br />

the limelight to share original poetry, music,<br />

comedy or one-act plays or to showcase<br />

any other unique talents. Performances are<br />

limited to five minutes or less and they must<br />

not contain any profanity or other insensitive<br />

topics. This event is for adults and teens aged<br />

14 and above. Registration is required.<br />

• Story Spinners Writing Club - Thursday, <strong>April</strong><br />

19th, 5:30-8 PM, Room 2C. This month’s topic<br />

will be “Flow.” From beginning blogger to published<br />

novelist, writers of all genres and experience<br />

levels are welcome to write, share, learn,<br />

support, network and critique each other’s<br />

work. Writing prompts, brainteasers and brief<br />

exercises will be available to ignite the imaginations<br />

of any and all wordsmiths who wish to<br />

hone their craft. This program is recommended<br />

for adults and teens aged 14 and up.<br />

• Cookin’ the Books” Book Club - 7 PM, Room<br />

2C. This new monthly book club is for people<br />

who enjoy cooking and would like to expand<br />

their culinary experience by sharing their<br />

interest with other food lovers. Cooking enthusiasts<br />

of all ages and experience levels - from<br />

beginners to advanced - are invited to join.<br />

Share tips, get ideas and enjoy the camaraderie<br />

of other individuals who have an interest in<br />

cooking and good cuisine! Meets on the fourth<br />

Thursday of every month, different cooking<br />

genres are explored each month.<br />

• Brantley Elementary School Band Mini-Concert<br />

- Friday, <strong>April</strong> 27th, 11 AM, Meeting Room.<br />

Students from the Brantley Beats Elementary<br />

School Band will perform an assortment of<br />

musical treats.<br />
