ETHNICITIES
AFROPERUANOS Y LOS “NUEVOS MEDIOS”:
EL ABORDAJE DE LA RAZA EN LAS PLATAFORMAS
DIGITALES
ANA LUCIA MOSQUERA
The addressing of race in the media has
always been controversial. As media is one
of the most influent spaces in society, the
ways in which it portrays and represents the
different racial groups have an impact in the
social perceptions, images, and representations
that we have of the others and ourselves.
However, the understanding of race
varies across countries and depends on demographics,
cultural and social issues; and
in the case of Peru, this understanding is influenced
by the construction of hierarchies
that uplift whiteness and maintain the ethnically
diverse groups in a state of permanent
marginalization.
While Peruvian identity is often associated
with miscegenation and cultural diversity,
the images that the mass media offers
differ widely with this diversity; and fail to
represent indigenous and Afro-descendant
minorities. This statement is also addressed
by scholars and activists that coincide
in the fact that, when looking at media in
Peru, misrepresentation, and underrepresentation
are two things that characterize
the presence of Afro-Peruvians.
This limited and often distorted presence
in the media is accompanied by negative
representations in which the Afro-Peruvians
appear in a position of subordination
and surveillance; or are associated with
criminality, poverty, and lack of abilities,
since Afro-Peruvians are often portrayed
on Peruvian television as subordinated,
exotic, and untalented.
In this context, the proliferation of social
media platforms acquires relevance as it
opens up a possibility to create more diverse
contents and function as a vehicle
for the formation of collective identities.
Taking this into consideration, it is necessary
to look at the digital spaces that have
started a conversation on race, racism and
blackness in a country like Peru. Although
these type of contents are new and recent,
platforms like Afrosiente and Una chica
afroperuana have become very popular
and Afro-Peruvian culture and identity.
The analysis of digital platforms is necessary
as it allows us to understand their impacts on
identity for diasporic communities and ethnic
minorities; the possibility to develop diversified
contents and contribute to the building
of self-esteem while appealing to a collective
a sense of belonging. Moreover, these spaces
are able to engage with underrepresented populations
by addressing issues concerning
them, such as the lack of visibility, racism, and
discrimination. Taking this into consideration,
the importance of these platforms relies on the
fact that they become an opportunity for the representation
and visibility of ethnic minorities,
being an attractive alternative to the traditional
media that often misrepresent them.
Another important thing to notice about these
spaces is the creation of what some scholars
call the “digital Diasporas”, a phenomenon
studied by some scholars that emphasize the
formation of communities that are united by
collective cultural experiences. This concept is
used to highlight the importance of new platforms
to shape and mobilize cultural identities to
address the complex experiences of diasporic
minorities; and because of it, this new type of
media presents multiple possibilities as it has
the potential to be massive but not controlled
by a mediated agenda, allowing self-expression
and the creation of directed messages.
The existence of new digital platforms allows
the development of contents that address issues
that the traditional media often ignore,
thus being vehicles for the creation of new
narratives that contest traditional representations
and the reinforcement of ethnicity-based
identities. Though there has been some research
done in relation to racism in digital platforms
in Peru, few scholars have addressed
social media as a mean of representation and
expression for racial minorities. Because of it,
these platforms are important as they have the
potential to become vehicles for the development
of collective race-based identities.
In this context, the existence of spaces like
Una Chica Afroperuana and Afrosiente are
important for its novelty and the purpose to
speak to a group who do not often identify with
the contents that other types of media offer to
them, creating a platform for the development
of identity and the visibility of the Afro-Peruvian
populations.
ETHNICITIES
AFRODESCENDIENTES
In what part of Panama was
Wendy Jordan born and in
what year?
I grew up in the neighborhood of San
Pedro, Juan Díaz, in Panama City
and I was born in 1977.
Tell us a bit about your childhood
and your family.
I grew up in a family environment
really full of love and union and with
a lot of support from my mother, father
and sisters, I lived in a community
where everyone supported and
protected each other.
During my childhood I enjoyed and
still enjoy practice sports and playing
in the street with no exit in front
of my house, although I also enjoyed
a good video game, especially those
that challenged my dynamism,
I could spend hours and days at
home insisting on surpassing the
levels and challenges in front of me.
How was the idea of Encuentra24
born?
In our Latin culture, full of economic
uncertainty, we like to understand
exactly what the offers are, the prices,
compare their benefits, that is,
quote everything before making a
purchase decision. My partner and
I wanted to make the important investment
of buying a home or a
business to start our business, but
at the time of studying the housing
offer, there was no updated database
of available inventory, there we
realized that we needed this option
and we made the decision to invest
our money creating it.
If you had not been an entrepreneur,
what would you have dedicated to?
I think I would have been an architect,
but somehow I would be building
some structure or platform.
Where did you study your high
school and college?
What lesson did you learn in the
worst way?
WENDY
JORDAN
INTERVIEW
I did high school in several centers,
I lived my adolescence in the United
States, so I did the Middle School in
Boston, United States and I finished
high school in Panama, in the Justo
Arosemena Institute.
I obtained my Bachelor’s degree in
Marketing and Advertising at Universidad
Latinoamericana de Ciencia y
Tecnología in Panama, years later I
studied a Masters in Strategic Management
of Integral Advertising
with IED and the University of Barcelona,
in Spain, in addition to a Technical
Degree in Web Design , also in
Barcelona.
I have learned in the win-win concept.
Our success is linked to the
success of all those who have used
the platform to achieve their goals
equally. If I aim for my profits, my
benefit, without offering clear benefits
and results for the other party,
the doors to opportunities will never
open.
PERSONALIDADES
ETHNICITIES
A business book that has
inspired you?
Good question, I have several books
like Rich Dad Poor Dad, Rise of the
DEO, Buy-ology, Lean In. I enjoy the
biographies of innovative entrepreneurs
who with perseverance reached
the goal after many years of
work.
What do you see yourself
doing from here in 10 years?
I see myself working on a project full
of creativity and causing tangible
positive impacts. I still do not know
what it is, but I will let the actions,
people I know and the environment
that surrounds me, tell me what I
should do in the future.
What apps would you recommend to
an entrepreneur?
There are many free apps that would
help an entrepreneur boost their digital
business. For example, use Uber
instead of buying a car, communicate
economically with applications
such as WhatsApp, acquire new techniques
and strategies of authors
on Kindle, maintain communication
with work teams through Slack, projects
organized with Todoist and
encuentra24.com of course, so you
can announce your new venture in
the largest business network in Panama.
What is the boldest decision you
have made?
The decision to move to Barcelona,
Spain, for a year to study a Master
in Web UX, four years after having
started with encuentra24. I knew
very early that I would need to know
more to drive the venture. The master
was not given for lack of quorum
and there was an opportunity to
study a Master in Advertising with
a large discount. It is the unplanned
changes that are perfect for the training
of each entrepreneur.
What has been the key to the success
of your business?
The key was patience and perseverance.
We understood very early that
this would not be fruitful in the first
years. During that time we dedicate
ourselves to learning and we became
the greatest experts in our niche,
as we invested our time and capital,
we were very careful when studying
the options and the results.
What matters most to you when
forming a team?
It is very important to have the objectives
clearly outlined in a black
and white contract, it is also essential
that the goals are achieved in
the agreed time, even when everyone
has different styles to reach it.
Over time I have also learned that
it is very important to maintain excellent
relationships with the team
where an atmosphere of respect for
the efforts, time and contribution of
each one prevails. If someone does
not fit in as part of the team, for the
health of the project, a quick decision
must be made and those who
do not have the same vision must be
separated.
A tip for our readers of all ages who
are about to start a business or who
have already started?
My advice is: Get started now! Nobody
will give you the idea of the business
they are looking for, nor the
money they require. They should be
able to demonstrate that their idea
works, besides they are investing
their time to innovate by establishing
clear numbers, numbers and
possible real conversions before
looking for an investor or partner,
the advice for those who have already
started is to study the market
and have a clear differentiation of
the current offer.
In previous editions of Beauty Express,
we’ve established that the foundation
of great make-up application lies in
our skin care routine and the products
we use on our skin. Developing good
skin care habits along with understanding
our skin and using products
designed specifically for our skin-type
and needs is the key to effective
make-up application.
In this edition of Beauty Express, we
will discuss how to choose the appropriate
tools for applying your makeup.
Using the right tools make all the difference
in the final result of our application.
How we apply make-up is a personal
choice; some people use their fingers,
others use sponges and silicones
and a majority of people use brushes.
Applying make-up with brushes can
create different results depending on
the type of brush used.
Make-up brushes are made from two
main types of bristles: natural hair,
synthetic fibers or a combination of
both. Each option should take into
consideration the type of make-up
product, the formula of the make-up
product and/or the desired finish.
Natural Bristles: Come from several
different types of animals (in order
of quality) including squirrel, pony
and goat hair. These bristles are soft
and are great for blending powder
products, i.e. face powder, blush, and
powder eyeshadows. Natural hairs
have what’s called a “natural cuticle,”
which means that the product is absorbed
into the bristles and application
is soft and light. These do not
deposit heavy amounts of make-up
BEAUTY EXPRESS
product. You must “build” (apply more) to increase intensity
of products when using natural bristled brushes.
Squirrel
The highest quality natural bristle, squirrel bristle brushes
are the priciest of natural brush options. These
brushes are soft and provide an even and smooth
application. Best used with powder products.
the make-up, application with synthetic
brushes will deposit more product than
natural brushes would, resulting in a
full coverage effect.
The cosmetic market is flooded with
many types of tools, the options and
understanding their usage can be
overwhelming. The truth is we don’t
need to have every single tool on the
market to apply our makeup. We will
identify our top 11 essential make-up
brushes for anyone starting in makeup.
Pony
Coming in second after squirrel bristle, pony bristle are
also good quality. These bristles are best used with
blushes and face powders.
Goat
Goat hair makeup brushes are considered a substitute
to squirrel brushes. They are the least expensive.
Because of price and quality these are the most commonly
used among natural bristle brushes.
How to maintain brushes:
Caring for your brushes is important
for hygiene, optimization of application
and the longevity of your brushes.
Wash your brushes regularly!
Brush cleaning solution can be found
at makeup counters or professional
make-up stores. You can also make
your own brush cleaning solution with
mild or baby shampoo. Add a drop of
the mild shampoo in the palm of your
hand and gently swirl the brush bristles
in the shampoo in your hand. Rinse
with warm water and gently, but firmly
squeeze out any excess water. Be careful
not to wet the wooden handles of
your brushes.
Synthetic Bristle brushes
are made from man-made materials, namely nylon
and taklon. These brushes are affordable and are widely
available. Synthetic bristles are not as soft as natural
hair, however, brush manufacturers are working
at perfecting the synthetic fibers to mimic their natural
counterparts. Unlike natural hair, nylon and taklon do
not have a cuticle and therefore will not absorb products.
These brushes are ideal for liquid, cream and
shimmer products. Because the fibers do not absorb
Set the brushes to dry by laying them
down on a clean towel on a flat surface
(like a kitchen or bathroom counter).
“You can’t solve a problem by staying in the same energy in which it was created”
– Albert Einstein-
In the course of our lives, we encounter difficult
situations, many of which represents a challenge.
One of these is the action of forgiveness. Many of
us say “I forgive you”, but do we really do it from the
heart? When people hurt us in different ways, we
develop feelings of anger and anguish, which are
toxic to our inner being. These acts that lead us to
remain in a state of low energy, require for some,
time to assimilate what happened and initiate the
process of “detachment”, but for others, it may represent
the beginning of a stagnation that can last
for long periods of time.
These periods of time can fluctuate in different
ways for some, but the truth is that while we remain
in that state of negativity, we pollute our body, soul
and spirit. It is the feelings of negativity that in most
cases, does not allow us to move forward and live
in a state of inner peace. While you remain in this
negative state of resentment, the sad thing is that,
in many cases, you are the only one who suffers
from the feeling, while the other person involved,
continues freely with his life, without knowing how
you feel inside. That is why we should try to adopt
ways of managing our emotions and feelings and
try to channel them in a positive way. If at the time,
the situation does not allow a rapprochement or an
opportunity to clarify what led to anger, there are
14

SPIRITUALITY
ETHNICITIES
ways you can adopt to gradually get rid
of these adverse feelings:
Giving yourself time: It is important to
give yourself time to calm your emotions
and try to take yourself to a more
tranquil state; analyze the situation and
know how to identify the faults or recognize
the respective responsibilities
of those involved. Acknowledge if you
are responsible or if it was the other
person’s fault. To recognize our own
mistakes is a weapon of total humility
to understand our actions and to rectify
our actions. If the error corresponds
to the other person involved, we must
also accept that not all the times you
will receive an acknowledgement or an
apology. It is there when you must understand
that each person is different
and it is very likely that they will not act
in the way you want to.
ter spiritual place for yourself.
Open Perspective: Remember that the situation represents
only a small part of your current life, but
not your “whole life”, since these are just sporadic
situations that come and go to make us have a state
of consciousness about our environment and
that the best is yet to come. Try not to adopt a “victim
“mentality, and see the situation as a guide, so
will not incur in similar situations in the future.
Let Go of Resentment: Staying attached to these
adverse feelings, not only are you hurting yourself,
but also giving control to other person in regards to
your emotions. When you respond to these feelings
of resentment, bitterness and anger, you immediately
become part of the problem, which sucks all
your good energy. Treat yourself conscientiously to
remain in a state of love, gratitude and happiness
for your own well-being. Remember: to forgive is to
release the feeling and to forget it is not to relive the
feeling or emotion.
SOCIAL EVENTS
15
Pray: If you are a spiritual person, use
your loving faith and say a prayer for
that person who has acted erroneously
towards you and send positive energies,
so that the person will find that
state of peace and solace within their
heart.
Retrospective approach: Be grateful
for the situation. Appreciate the teaching
that the situation has brought to
your life and take it as a lesson to grow
and develop more understanding. It is
valid to analyze the situation and ask
yourself how this situation will help me
internally. Ask yourself if the situation is
testing your faith, your level of patience,
understanding, compassion or mercy
and forgiveness towards the other person.
Remember that every life situation
has a purpose, which sometimes at times,
we do not know how to recognize
it. Once you know how to identify the
lesson, you can put into practice or be
more aware of these aspects to elevate
your behavior and personality to a bet-
Give love: Sometimes, no matter how difficult it may
be, even though you have been hurt, try to find that
space of compassion and love towards the person
that hurt you, since compassion is what will make
you understand that maybe this person is lack of
love, understanding and compassion within their
own environment. It is the desire or positive energy
that you will send, which will fill you with great sense
of well-being.
Create a Mantra: Mentally repeat a phrase that becomes
your ritual during the day, which will represent
your shield against contaminating your inner
being, for example ... “I am peace, I am light, I am
love”.
