A moveable feast that is
much more than chocolate
Easter is both the most sombre and joyful
time in the Christian calendar, calling believers
to remember the crucifixion of Christ and His
resurrection. Its date changes each year, making
it a ‘moveable feast.’ The Easter story lies at the
heart of the Christian faith and its importance
is celebrated with special celebrations. But just
what does it all mean?
The week leading up to Easter Sunday is
Holy Week which starts with Palm Sunday,
commemorating Jesus’ arrival into Jerusalem.
It is marked in many churches by giving palm
fronds, or a local equivalent like flax, which
represents the way He was welcomed and
revered.
Maundy Thursday, or Holy Thursday,
remembers the Last Supper where the first
Holy Communion was established and is a
fundamental feature of many Christian services
2,000 years later. The day also recognises Jesus’
betrayal, arrest and trial and is marked in
Christian churches by services of foot-washing
and the stripping of alters.
That is followed by Good Friday, the date on
Anglican
which Jesus Christ was executed by crucifixion
and the markings on the hot cross buns we all
enjoy are representative of that.
As well as being a public holiday, it is a
solemn acknowledgment of the horrific death
that ultimately led to the establishment of the
Christian faith.
Catholics and Anglicans alike commemorate
the events of Good Friday in the Stations of the
Cross, the church bells are not rung and alters
remain bare.
Holy Week concludes with Easter Sunday,
the most significant celebration in the Christian
calendar and a time to rejoice. It celebrates
Christ’s resurrection and the triumph of good
over evil.
Christians across Christchurch will be
attending church services and it is the day when
arguably everyone’s favourite part of Easter –
chocolate eggs – are given. So, when you are
enjoying your Easter Eggs this year, take some
time to reflect on the true meaning behind Holy
Week.
