PHOTO GILBERT WEALLEANS Cotswold pupils get new bikes and track • By Julia Evans COTSWOLD SCHOOL pupils love their new bikes. The Bishopdale school raised more than $70,000 to become the second school in the city to join the Bikes in Schools programme. The Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board earmarked $15,000 to go towards the programme, which aims to provide children with easy access to bicycles. The school has purchased a fleet of bicycles in four different sizes and helmets, and is building a cycle track around the school field and a storage facility. The track will be open to the 500 Cotswold pupils during the school day and to the community after school hours and on weekends. SCHOOLS Local sports clubs, pre-schools and kindergartens will also have access to the track. The school plans to hold duathlons and cycle races on the track. More than 65 schools across the country have worked with the Bikes in Schools Charitable Trust to implement the programme. However, Cotswold has become only the second school in the city to run it, alongside Rawhiti School in North New Brighton. The sooner the better for sore heel treatment We’ve all enjoyed the long, hot summer but unfortunately, for some, the extended time wearing jandals and comfortable shoes to stay cool has resulted in sore heels. “That’s due to the lack of support for the feet, which can result in the arches falling,” says Ian Graham of the Papanui Foot Clinic. “We are seeing a lot of people with this problem, and our advice to anyone suffering from sore heels is to come and see us as soon as possible. The quicker it’s seen to, the quicker we can get them ‘up and running’ again.” Patients are also given exercises that target the area and ease the problem, Ian says. However, wearing closed-in shoes can also cause problems for some, with ingrowing toenails resulting from toes being squashed creating pain and discomfort. Ian and his fellow podiatrist Anna Brown can easily treat the problem, with Ian specialising in ingrowing toenail surgery. Children often experience foot problems, too, particularly when they change from one sport to another at this time of year. Painful heels, for example, are quite common in children and these can be treated with orthotic support. “We make foot orthotics here at the clinic,” Ian says. “Anyone with heel pain, sore bunions, sore arches, flat feet and lower leg pain can be treated with foot orthotics.” The Papanui Foot Clinic also carries the Dr Comfort footwear range for men and women. WINNER: Space Oddity by Isleworth Primary School won the people’s choice award. Futuristic garden takes out award A GARDEN named after a David Bowie song won Isleworth Primary the people’s choice award at the Oderings School Gardens Show. Space Oddity was set up at the Woolston Club recently with the public able to vote for their favourite garden display. Isleworth was one of 11 schools showcasing their green-thumbed talent under the theme ‘into the future’. Judges from the Canterbury Horticultural Society handed out awards. Bryndwr’s Wairakei School was handed gold by judges for their garden called A Dual Purpose.
