BEHIND THE SCENES REFUGE TOUR OF PARKER RIVER NWR Saturday, March 31st @ 9:30 a.m. Join a refuge ranger for a behind the scenes tour of Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. Tour will be conducted via refuge van, with several brief “drive by” stops along the way. The tour will present an “up close and personal” look at the refuge through the multiple lenses of the cultural history of Plum Island and the Great Marsh, native wildlife and their habitats, and the role of refuge management in the conservation of these precious natural resources. Participants may be driven along areas on the refuge otherwise closed to the public. This guided two hour program is most appropriate for older teens and adults. Binoculars and/or a camera are recommended, but not required. Meet the ranger in the lobby of the Refuge visitor center 15 minutes prior to the program start time. Each session is limited to 14 participants; no more than 4 individuals per sign-up. Again, this is a vehicle – based tour, with limited stops on the Refuge. Advance registration is required for this program, as enrollment is limited. Be advised that individual tours may be subject to cancellation. *Please note: Those who call and leave messages after hours, your registration is not confirmed until you receive a confirmation call from a refuge staff member. BASIL’S KITCHEN Bake Sale (breads, desserts, spinach pies) on Saturday, March 31st from 10:00 AM—2:00 PM in first floor hall of Annunciation Church, entry at 7 Harris St, Newburport. St. Basil’s is an outreach program that serves a hot meal to anyone who enters on Mondays, 11:00 AM—12:30 PM each week of the year. The parish family of Annunciation Orthodox Church is raising money for a new commercial dishwasher to be installed in St. Basil’s Kitchen. This will allow us to use dishware, cups and stainless flatware for meals, eliminating the need for paper and plastic currently in use. The dishwasher will also be available to the parish at large for use during the year for events such as our annual Greek Food Festival each summer during Yankee Homecoming. We are near our current goal of $3,000 needed to purchase the dishwasher. Our hope is to reach that goal through this bake sale (just in time for Easter!). Baked goods of all kinds will be available as well as spinach pies that can be pre-ordered and purchased the day of the sale. PROVIDENCE RAPTORS: URBAN WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY Saturday, March 31st, noon to 1:30 p.m. - Program presenter Peter Green is a photographer and graphic designer living and working in downtown Providence. He walks the city, documenting peregrine falcons and more urban wildlife from red-tailed hawks nesting on rooftops to American kestrels hunting in graffiti-covered alleys. These regal, powerful raptors seem perfectly at home among the landscape of bricks and concrete. His photographs and stories provide a fascinating description of the birds of prey that are thriving in our urban environments, where tall buildings have replaced rocky cliffs and a ready supply of prey are found in the midst of our urban crowds. The program will take place in the refuge visitor center auditorium. This free public program is sponsored by the Friends of Parker River National Wildlife Refuge and Parker River NWR. TUESDAY, APRIL 3rd MUSICAL BASEBALL SHOW To help celebrate the start of the 2018 baseball season, the Manchester Senior Center is hosting a musical baseball show with local singer-guitarist Howie Newman on Tuesday, April 3, at 1 p.m. This event is open to anyone 60 or older in Rowley and the surrounding towns. The senior center is located at 39 Central St. Reservations can be made by calling 978-948-7637. Newman, a former sportswriter for the Lynn Item, Boston Globe and other newspapers, covered the Red Sox for many years and has also remained an avid fan, having visited 89 major and minor league ballparks. He will sing baseball songs, offer up baseball trivia and talk about his days on the Bosox beat. In addition, Newman will hold a free raffle for his two baseball CDs, Baseball’s Greatest Hits, Volumes 1 and 2. Not all of the program will focus on baseball. Newman will also play classic songs from yesteryear, including the music of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Elvis Presley as well as show tunes and standards. “Baseball is the one sport that really lends itself to music,” said Newman, whose experience also includes three years of radio color commentary for the Lowell Spinners, a Red Sox farm team. “I’ll be playing a few of my own baseball songs and some other baseball standards that everyone knows. We’ll talk baseball, do some trivia and just have fun. If people have questions about the Red Sox and what it’s like to cover the team, I’ll be happy to answer them. “It’s going to be a very unique type of show and I’m sure folks will enjoy it. Ron will answer common questions about antiques while appraising antiques brought in by patrons. Starting Monday, March 19th, patrons wishing to have an item appraised can sign up in person at the reference desk or by calling 978- 465-4428 x242. The first 45 people to register will be eligible to bring in one item to be appraised. Time constraints may keep Ron from finishing all 45 appraisals before the end of the program. Therefore, sign up is not a guarantee of appraisal. Registration is not required for attendees who do not wish to bring an item in for appraisal.
