Installation News www.machineryupdate.co.uk MARCH/APRIL <strong>2018</strong> MACHINERY UPDATE 39 Million pound investments meet pharma needs of contract packer Pharmaceutical contract manufacturer and packer Wasdell Group is investing millions in new equipment and processes to help meet its stated ambitions of becoming the number one contract packaging company in Europe. The company has also announced expansion plans in Swindon as well as a new greenfield site in Ireland. At the end of last year, the company invested £1.1 million in a new Romaco Noack blister machine for its Burnley facility which was supplied by Pharma Machinery while this January, the company announced a £1 million investment in serialisation (track and trace) technology. The latest Noack machine joins the Romaco-only fleet of equipment housed across the Wasdell facilities and has increased the company’s annual capacity by 500 million blisters. This new 950 unit expands the fleet of Noack machines to pack pharmaceutical, health and nutritional products into blisters. An advantage of the new technology is that existing tooling can work across both machines with Wasdell director of sales Andy Causer The latest Noack machine - the 950 - joins the Romaco-only fleet of equipment housed across the Wasdell sites only slight modifications to the cutters required. Director of sales Andy Causer, a qualified engineer, is very familiar with the Noack equipment and believes these quick changeover machines are perfect to meet the short production runs that the contract packer has to cope with all the time. Focusing on just one supplier of such key equipment also brings other benefits. “Our engineers are used to working on them and have built up a bank of knowledge,” he tells Machinery Update. “Our spare parts are also rationalised, and our inhouse engineering facilities make blister tooling available within 4-6 weeks,” he says. “Speed to market is key for us which is why we invested in our tool making facilities,” he continues. “This is an important element of our business that we have complete control over,” he says. At the start of the project, Wasdell’s Phil Vines visited Romaco in Germany with Dave Renninson of the UK agent Pharma Machinery to discuss all the specifications. Meanwhile, the company believes it is staying one step ahead in the fight to stop counterfeit drugs thanks to its recent investment in serialisation. The technology meets FMD requirements and enables each pack produced at Wasdell to be serialised, tamper-proofed and aggregated at case and pallet levels. Although the deadline for FMD compliance is February next year, Causer says the fact that Wasdell is ahead of the game in this area is already bringing in more new business The company has built a bank of knowledge to the group, even from big pharma companies that have not yet started down the road to compliance. The company identified the need for new machinery and software and the project was overseen by group validation manager Ayo Sotannde. Four new machines will be added to production lines, with the first one now in operation. The company worked closely with the software designers and the machine manufacturers to specify exactly what was needed according to clients’ needs across the world. “We’ve taken a very proactive approach here and have been preparing for the arrival of this legislation for almost a year,” says Sotannde. “This first machine will enable us to help protect our clients’ goods and the general public against counterfeit pharmaceuticals.” T 01252 444334 W www.pharmamachinery.co.uk
