“INSPIRED BY A VISION, FOCUSED
ON A MISSION, ROOTED IN
KINGDOM VALUES”
Vision
We envision a movement of God’s people who choose daily to promote healing in marginalized
communities in the name of Jesus.
Mission
The mission of Christian Community Health Fellowship is to encourage, engage and equip
Christians to live out the gospel through healthcare among the poor and marginalized.
Values
• Supremacy of Christ: Honoring the Lordship of Christ and submitting ourselves to his authority and
person.
• Prophetic Voice: Challenging God’s people to choose to go against the status quo; to be
incarnational, sacrificial, and to enter into the suffering of the poor.
• Wholistic Care: Encouraging excellent, compassionate health care, ministering to spiritual, physical,
and emotional needs of people and their communities.
• Reconciliation: Restoring right relationships to God, to one another, and to all of creation,
addressing barriers that commonly divide, including race, social status, and economic oppression.
• Justice: Working toward God’s kingdom, setting all things right for the oppressed, the forgotten,
and particularly the marginalized in our health care system.
• Partnership: Listening to and working alongside churches, patients, our communities, and one
another.
The Role of CCHF
There is a growing movement of Christians who are committed to bring healing to marginalized communities in Jesus’
name. CCHF is the joint effort of those in the movement to help others find their place in our common cause, persevere
in our mutual calling, and grow in our understanding of what it means to be ambassadors of Christ in healthcare and in
communities of need. Simply put, the role of CCHF is to support and grow this movement. We do this through..
1.Relational Network
The most powerful thing about CCHF is the actual community. It is real and relational. We share our experiences and insights and help one another. We
help members of this movement find one another and connect in meaningful ways that honors Christ and advances His cause.
2.National & Regional Events
The most visible of these is the CCHF conference - a 3-day event with inspiring speakers, informative workshops, and opportunities to network. Christian
leaders and pioneers are available to newcomers to both share and to listen to the new voices in this community.
3.Students & Residents
Through collaborative relationships with groups like CMDA, MCO and InterVarsity, CCHF practitioners speak to campus groups at over 100 campuses
every year. We provide clinical experiences through preceptor and internship programs in Christian clinics. And we help residents find placements at
clinics where they can integrate faith with clinical care for the medically underserved.
4.Publications
CCHF publishes books like Upholding the Vision and Faith in the Trenches, podcasts like CCHF|Talk, newsletters, and other literature that gives voice to
those in our community who help us stay fruitful and effective in living out the gospel through healthcare among those who are poor.
5.www.cchf.org
The CCHF website is a “toolshed” where participants in the movement share resources to help you grow in conviction and ability to fulfill your calling in
healthcare. It is constantly growing as the community adds content, and the dialogue progresses as we grapple with what it means to live out the gospel
through healthcare among the poor.
PAGE 15
A CULTURE OF PRAYER
“I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask
for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or
three come together in my name, there am I with them.” (Matt 18.19-
20)
Prayer is a tangible admission that we are dependent on God. It is
perhaps the greatest way to grow in our intimacy with Him through
Christ, and without doubt, the most important thing we do at this
conference.
Take advantage of our time together to pray with one another, pay
attention to God’s presence and His leading, and make space for
prayer throughout the conference.
Here are some prayer opportunities:
• Corporate Prayer during the plenary sessions. These will be led
by people on stage and will give us time to pray for one another.
• Prayer Team. After plenary sessions and throughout the
conference members of the “Prayer Team” are available to pray
for and with you. These are select, trusted, balanced Christians
who will be wearing Prayer Team t-shirts. They have already
been praying for you, and are ready to stand with you as you
respond to God’s word and the Spirit’s conviction.
“…the Spirit helps
us in our weakness.
We do not know what
we ought to pray for,
but the Spirit himself
intercedes for us with
groans that words
cannot express… the
Spirit intercedes for the
saints in accordance
with God’s will.”
“Christ Jesus, who
died--more than that,
who was raised to life-
-is at the right hand
of God and is also
interceding for us.”
(Rom 8:26-27,34)
• Pray with others. Please pray with one another! Pray with those
you already know and those you are meeting for the first time.
We are all discovering what it means to live out the gospel as a
community, and it is almost never inappropriate for us to pray
for one another.
We look forward to hearing how God has met you at the conference,
how he used you in the lives of others, and how He used others to
speak to you.
PAGE 16
“Ask and it will be
given to you; seek and
you will find; knock
and the door will be
opened to you.”
Leading a faith-based
The way faith informs our
leadership style, decision
making processes, and our
priorities makes our jobs
unique. This gathering
of executives of Christian
health organizations is an
opportunity to connect with
new leaders and reconnect
with old friends who
understand the pressures
and joys of stewarding both
“mission” and “margin”.
This session is designed
to allow us to both share
as we discuss in group
of the key challenges and
opportunities that confront
Acute and
Chronic, Non-
Malignant Pain
Case Studies
John Boll
The management of pain in
underserved communities
is challenging as providers
strive to bring healing.
This challenge is more
pronounced with recent
paradigm changes in pain
management where opioids
are no longer recommended
in deference to non-opioid
alternatives. This session
covers principles in regards
to pain treatment, including
the prevention of pain and
addiction, harm reduction,
and methods to maximize
non-opioid alternatives
for pain management. It
addresses the new challenges
providers face in the wake of
the current opioid crisis by
reviewing cases highlighting
unique aspects of acute
and chronic, non-malignant
pain treatment. Audience
members will work through
cases in small groups and
then participate in a follow up
discussion.
at an inner-city psychosocial
rehabilitation program
such that 100% of the
participants achieved their
treatment goals consistently
over 3 years. This seminar
will 1) introduce research on
the relationship between
spirituality and mental
health, 2) describe the
spirituality group as an
example, and 3) address
how to implement spiritual
interventions in the process
of transforming persons in
Christ. This workshop will
explore the who, what, why,
and how of using spiritual
interventions. Assessment
tools and case examples
will be discussed.
current opioid epidemic.
This workshop looks at
the science and history
of the epidemic to bring
better understanding and
to sift through fact and
urban legend. It will discuss
recovery and treatment
approaches, highlight the
importance of connection
in recovery, and the role
that Christian health centers
and churches can play in
restoring lives wrecked
by this pandemic. Led by
experts in addiction and
recovery who have been
active in Ohio’s state-wide
efforts to address this crisis,
the presenters will discuss
strategies of collaborative
partnerships, the role of
faith in the continuum of
care, and ways for local
churches to engage the
problem siting examples
from other communities.
many churches. Are you
interested in treating
HIV and addressing how
This workshop will dive
into the epidemiology of
HIV in the U.S., updates in
HIV care and treatment,
and discuss development
of HIV treatment program
within an FQHC and steps
It would be difficult to
overstate the role that
John Perkins has had in
inspiring and directing the
movement of Christians
towards living out the
gospel through healthcare
among those who are
poor and marginalized. He
is the father of Christian
community development
and the co-founder of
CCHF. In this moderated
discussion led by Takesha
Leonard, NP, Dr. John
Perkins will talk to
those disciples who are
willing to take the lead
in a movement to bring
healing to marginalized
communities in the name
of Jesus. He will discuss
the central role the gospel
must play in seeing real
change through our efforts
to engage communities of
need, and how we should
demonstrate as well as
declare that gospel.
The increasingly stressful
healthcare environment
limits clinicians’ ability
to provide whole-person
care that considers the
physical, psychological,
social, and spiritual needs
of those with chronic
disabling illness. Spiritual
care teams have been
shown to help clinicians
stay efficient and provide
quality spiritual care at the
same time in a wide variety
of inpatient and outpatient,
secular and faith-based
care environments. In this
seminar, the author of
CMDA’s popular Grace
Prescriptions course
will describe an exciting
way for Christian health
professionals to form teams
to provide whole-person
care in most any healthcare
environment and the
capacity to increase the
quality of patient care.
Barriers to providing care,
the brokenness of our
healthcare system, the
difficulty of our daily work,
non-compliant patients,
EMR – the list goes on.
These are the things that
challenge our love for our
patients and our work,
and test our resilience. Recontextualizing
our work as
worship, and offering it as a
sacrifice of suffering on the
altar of pride, can serve as
an antidote to the burn out
that plagues the modern
practice of medicine.
When we acknowledge our
weakness and suffering,
we open the floodgates of
heaven to fill us with the
strength of God. Ultimately
the Lord is glorified, we are
strengthened, and our community
is blessed by God’s
power made manifest in our
weakness.
What makes marriage
work? Why do couples
get divorced when they
have the same problems
as couples who make it
work and stay together?
Divorce is at an epidemic
proportion. The breakdown
of the family creates one
of the saddest times in
families lives. Our Lord
cries when this happens.
We need to see past our
misunderstandings and look
to how we can fulfill the
blessing of marriage. This
session will help couples
find a 3rd way to keep the
promises they made to
each other and to the Lord.
We will review 6 rules of
engagement that couples
who last use, and work on
exercises that increase your
ability to understand your
partner.
Hurricanes, floods,
earthquakes, fires.
Disasters happen with
little or no warning, and
bring not only destruction,
but chaos. Medical care
during and after natural
disasters requires special
skill sets. God has placed
people strategically to
bring peace and healing
in times of great tragedy
and need. This session
is a panel discussion on
preparation and execution
of operational and medical
delivery during a natural
disaster. Based on actual
experience, a team of
medical leaders will share
about lessons they learned
during super-storm Sandy
and Hurricane Harvey. They
will discuss preparations
clinics have made before
and since the disasters they
encountered, and leave
time for Q&A.
Most organizational leaders
will tell you that their
highest staff turnover rate
is among support staff.
Perhaps one reason is that
support staff are often
overlooked for their part
in bringing value to the
healthcare organization’s
mission and ministry. In
this session, Kyle Vath will
lead a discussion about
how recruiting, hiring,
managing, discipling and
developing support staff in
your organization may be
one of the most important
tasks ministry leaders
hold in ensuring that your
mission flourishes.
Many students and young
professionals want to be a
part of pioneering medical
work, but don’t know
where to start. There are
many resources available
on the practical/business
side of how to start a clinic.
Even step-by-step guides
on starting an FQHC, or
fundraising, or how to
choose a board. There is
also a lot of information
on the overall health and
poverty statistics in our
country. The problem is
how to choose what city
to go to and what to do
when you get there. This
session will seek to navigate
both a Biblical approach to
following God’s call and the
practical ways of exploring
the resources and needs
of a city.
Sold on the value of
integrated behavioral
health services within your
primary care clinic? What
happens when there’s
not enough behavioral
health providers to go
around, or you haven’t
been able to hire any yet?
Many care team members
(including primary care
providers) find themselves
ill-equipped, under-trained,
and unsure of how to best
identify, treat, and manage
behavioral health concerns
within the fast-paced
nature of primary care. This
session is geared toward
educating and equipping
multidisciplinary care
team members without
specialized behavioral
health training to effectively
deliver brief interventions
and adopt practical
treatment strategies.
The sin of idolatry is hard
to ignore during medical
school -- desiring the
best education, the most
knowledge, the best
grades, entrance to a
top residency program,
popularity, respect, comfort.
Praise Jesus that the Gospel
offers so much more than
that, and for the accountability
that the Body of
Christ (including the CCHF
network!) provides. Come
hear the stories of four very
imperfect medical students
as they pursue a perfect
God and His commandment
to make disciples of
all nations.
Healthcare providers are
familiar with an evidencebased
practice model
which promotes clinical
decision making based on
empirical evidence and
expert opinion. You are
likely very familiar with
resources which synthesize
the best evidence for
patient care, but where
do you start when you
want to reach outside
the walls of your clinic?
How do you know what
works best to improve the
health of neighborhoods
and communities? In this
session, we will explore two
web-based resources which
synthesize evidence-based
approaches to improving
population health.
There are those in your
church who genuinely want
to do more to care for the
poor, stranger, widow, and
orphan, but they don’t
understand what to do or
where to start. This is the
story of a program that
has helped transform a
suburban church in Western
Michigan by helping them
engage their vulnerable
neighbors. They spend
alternate weeks off-site
listening to & serving the
poor, and other weeks
studying, processing and
connecting. Topics include
the Biblical mandate to
serve, racism, and helping
without hurting. The
program ends with a retreat
focused on the next steps
God wants them to take.
This presentation will lead
you through a process that
you can replicate it in your
church. Study materials,
resources and templates
will be shared.
Physicians are
uncomfortable dealing
with opioid misuse and
addiction. Continuing
the opioids and abruptly
stopping them are both
bad choices. This panel
discussion will explore how
three clinics are addressing
the national opioid crisis in
their day-to-day interactions
with their patients. The
panel will cover tools to
recognize misuse and
addiction and present
interventions including
pharmacotherapy. The last
help of the program will
be devoted to learning
how to communicate nonjudgmentally
but without
enabling the patient to
continue their misuse or
addiction. This portion
will be case-based with
audience participation.
The speaker will share how
he shares the gospel in a
nonsectarian setting in a
manner that is acceptable
and also sees patients
connecting with the gospel
and local churches.
Jesus doesn’t command us
to just make converts, but
to make disciples. Still, how
do you do that practically
— particularly as it relates
to working in healthcare?
This seminar will provide
a simple, yet holistic
model for evangelism,
discipleship, and leadership
development today — to
help people move from
skeptic to world-changer.
Yes, this is a thing - and it
has been a game-changer
for a number of Christian
clinics. This seminar focuses
on leadership dynamics and
change needed to lead a
clinic through the process
of becoming a Federally
Qualified Health Center
Look-Alike designee. We
will walk clinic leadership
through how to successfully
help your staff and board
make the transition. Baptist
Community Health Services,
New Orleans, will share
from its experience as a
3-year old clinic in making
a successful conversion to a
FQHC LAL. Highlights will
include transitioning your
board; organizing key staff
to help you, communicating
with all your staff about the
strategic direction you are
moving toward as an FQHC
candidate, and more.
You know that you’ve
been called to serve in
the inner-city. However
you sometimes wonder
how you can effectively
serve in a community
whose culture may be
quite different from the
one that you have always
known. This workshop
will utilize discussion and
case study illustrations to
provide practical steps
that we can take to better
understand the culture, and
engage more fully, with the
community that we have
been called to serve as
urban missionaries.
God desires us to be
fruitful, effective, visionary
disciples for His glory and
our joy. That is our norm.
So when we feel fruitless,
ineffective, and blind,
we need to know how to
rebound. This session will
help instruct those new to
this type of ministry, who
are excited about entering
into the field of missional
medicine, and it will
encourage those who have
been at this a while and
who are weary from years
of labor. Robert Campbell,
co-founder of Christ
Community Health Services
of Augusta, will share from
God’s word and discuss
his experiences of over 10
years of healthcare ministry
the primary care context,
often an entry point for
healthcare for vulnerable
children and families. The
current workshop will afford
participants an overview
of a foundational ACEs
study and offer insights into
mechanisms for addressing
ACEs from a holistic health
perspective. Further, the
workshop will encourage
ongoing dialogue
regarding opportunities for
growth within the primary
care environment.
As CCHF transitions
into the new healthcare
environment, a new
generation of pioneers are
ready to bring shape and
growth to this movement.
Come and hear how
these emerging leaders
are applying established
principles of living out the
gospel through healthcare
among the poor. Several
of these young physician
leaders are in the midst
of startups. Others are
still in their training, but
with clear ideas of what
it means to serve Christ
missionally through
medicine. Attendees, too,
can become emerging
leaders and pioneers-
-men and women who
will bring glory to God,
expand the Kingdom of
Jesus, encourage the
wider Church, and bring
healthcare equity to our
marginalized neighbors.
While we may not be able
to “fix” the immigration
challenges on a federal
level, we all have the opportunity
to advocate
and act on a local level.
Goshen, IN is a small town
with a surprisingly large
Hispanic community. Center
for Healing & Hope, a
Christian charitable clinic
that serves this marginalized
population, engaged
in a collaborative process to
offer and produce “Goshen
Resident Identification
Cards” (GRID) in response
to the challenges that
immigrants currently face.
This session will utilize the 6
CCHF Principles of Christian
Health Care to share the
story of how this project
came about, the initial
implementation challenges,
and current status of this
project, in the Christian
effort to create “community
for all”.
Does modern medicine
eliminate and ignore the
place for spirituality and
spiritual care? Is there
evidence that spirituality,
and Biblical spiritual
disciplines in particular,
has an affect on health
outcomes? This session
will first look at current
evidence surrounding the
effect of spirituality on
health. The second half
will provide some practical
tools and practices that you
as health care worker can
employ and empower your
patients to practice that will
lead to true transformation
of their health and their
lives. This workshop is
appropriate for providers
and support staff at all
levels.
How do we overcome our
tepid half-hardheartedness
to being a faithful and true
witness of Christ Jesus
in His work of healing,
restoration and health?
Both individuals and
local churches struggle
in the desire to commit
to bold transformations
for the implementation of
God’s health agenda. The
struggle to create a mission
driven culture is real but not
insurmountable. We invite
anyone vested in Christian
healing communities to
join us in reflecting on how
we can embrace major
reformation, renewal, and
investments in promoting
the physical and spiritual
healing felt needs of our
communities.
Medicine often shifts
students away from their
first calling to serve. For
the believer our calling
to serve is for the Master,
who, according to Eph
2:10 says, “for we are His
workmanship created
in Christ Jesus for good
works, which He prepared
beforehand, that we should
walk in them.” Faith can
guide us through the
turbulent waters of medical
training. Direction in life,
direction in faith expression,
values that guide us all
through our faith, and
being able to correctly
and spiritually be a man or
woman of principle and not
people who are pragmatic
like so many in society,
medicine and life. Realign
your thinking to the service
aligned with the Scriptures.
We all enter our faith with
the hope that our lives will
get better, and that we’ll
impart the blessings of
life in Christ to those we
serve and serve alongside.
However, somewhere along
the way the dream can
become disappointing,
frustrating, tedious,
discouraging, and even
broken. How can we pick
back up and continue to
grow and enjoy life while
resisting and recovering
from life’s setbacks?
Will God fix us and the
situations we find ourselves
in, or is brokenness our
inevitable destination? This
session will help you make
a biblical/clinical analysis of
your condition, and apply
lessons from others and our
own history to rediscover
the enduring Hope that we
are meant to enjoy in Christ.
Good Samaritan Health
Services-Tulsa is a nationally
recognized leader in utilizing
mobile medical vans
for over a decade. Many
in underserved populations
often face difficulties
accessing quality care;
transportation to a fixed
base clinic, fear of discovery
for undocumented persons,
or impersonal care provided
by public health clinics.
Attendees will gain knowledge
of the value (and challenges)
of utilizing mobile
medical vans to provide
healthcare to a number of
populations not all located
in one place. Furthermore
understanding the cost and
requirements of doing medical
care on the road, and
learning the keys to success
in using mobile medical
vans for ministry.
Many believers do not
get the full benefit of
the gift of life, which is
our own, because we
have not adopted a life
practice that effectively
moves us toward healing
of emotional wounds and
disappointments, while at
the same time forgetting
much good that we were
intended to consciously
keep. This workshop will
reflect on a few profound
portions of scripture,
inviting the Holy Spirit to
help us unpack our own
life narratives in such a
way as to move us toward
further emotional healing
and wholeness, to better
equip us for our present/
future. Additionally it will
help us mark and recall the
“ Ebeneezer “ moments of
our lives.
As managers and leaders
we need to go beyond
cultural facts, cultural
knowledge, and ethnic
diversity for the sake of
diversity. It is critical that
we ask, “Is our diversity
inclusive? Are people
identified beyond their job
titles?” This session is an
invitation to have an honest
and real conversation about
what it means to be the
type of leader with whom
minority groups have a
desire to work, having
leadership reflect the
community it serves, and
leading the organization
to its best expression of
God’s diversity as a gift to
our community and to one
another.
The stigma of mental
illness is still very real in
the church. Few are able
to speak openly about
it or know what to do to
assist those who need
help. It is up to us to help
church leaders better
understand congregants
and parishioners with
mental illness and know
how to minister to them.
This session will define what
mental illness is, explore
how the church responds
to people with mental
disorders, present survey
results from churches in Los
Angeles (CA) County, and
discuss action steps that
churches can implement
to minister to congregants
with mental health needs.
Tools and resources will be
shared.
San Francisco City Impact
Health & Wellness is a free
clinic in the Tenderloin
district of downtown San
Francisco serving the city’s
homeless and marginally
housed residents. Dr.
Clifford Lau will share
about their unique patient
demographic and tailored
healthcare delivery
model. He will also share
transparently about lessons
learned through patient
stories, clinical experiences,
and the intersection of real
life and healthcare ministry
weaved through 3 themes:
1) Running ahead of God, 2)
What is money? and 3) How
to call it quits.
Oral health is an integral
part of total body
health, but we have been
conditioned to think of
oral health as a separate
phenomenon. This session
was designed to educate
health center administrative
and support staff on how
to successfully transform
one’s thinking to incorporate
oral health education
into the patient’s medical
visit and into community
health initiatives. This will
be achieved by assisting
non-medical staff with
understanding the mouth/
body connection, as well as,
identifying the oral health
determinants to optimal
health. Attendees will leave
confident in discussing oral
health concerns, as well
as, initiating the appropriate
oral health referrals for
patients.
In 1976 John Perkins began
teaching a framework for
ministry in low income
communities known as the
“Three R’s”: Relocation,
Reconciliation, and
Redistribution. Are they
still a valid framework for
us to use today, 42 years
later? We think so. In this
workshop you will learn how
we at Lawndale Christian
Health Center still utilize
the “Three R’s” as core
values for guiding our
work. Might the “Three R’s
help your organization?
This workshop will help
you ponder creating core
values and clear frameworks
for creating an effective
ministry.
The present political
climate comes as a shock to
many of us who have fought
for years to see a more just
health care system and who
have committed to help
aliens, refugees and asylee
seekers in this country.
What does this mean to
the poorest and most
vulnerable among us, and
what should followers of
Jesus do? This session will
explore the rich tradition
of Biblical advocacy on
behalf of the poorest
and most vulnerable
throughout history. What
does advocacy mean for
us today? What does it
mean to have a prophetic
voice? How can we make a
difference not just providing
good care to individuals but
also advocating for a more
just society that reflects the
Kingdom of God?
Healthy leadership teams
are necessary for any
successful healthcare
organization. With the
evolution of healthcare
delivery, clinical teams
have gained importance
as well. Team performance
is a product of competent
leadership and member
engagement, founded
on relational trust. This
presentation will describe
five behaviors critical for
the creation of a cohesive
team, and help attendees
become better leaders and
team members.
Have you longed to
integrate your Christian
faith into your patient care
– both on the mission field
abroad and in your work
at home? Most patients
want their healthcare
professional to be sensitive
to their spiritual needs
during illness. Yet, the
vast majority of healthcare
professionals do not know
how to assess and address
these need and fewer still
actually provide this aspect
of care in their patient
care. Not sure how to do
this in a caring, sensitive,
and relevant manner? This
“working” session will
explore the ethical basis for
spiritual care plus provide
you with profession, timely,
and practical methods to
care for the whole person in
the clinical setting.
You don’t have to have an
MD or MBA to be used
by God. God calls us all
to be missional in the way
we approach our jobs, and
every other area of our lives.
Janet Aguirre and Katie
Huff, a medical assistant
and a registered nurse, will
share stories and experiences.
They never expected
to be thrust into leadership
roles at a grassroots
homeless clinic, but offered
their training and their path
to honor Christ, and have
learned/are learning what
it means to live missionally.
Doing work that is often
unfamiliar with their training,
God is using them and
teaching them how to walk
out the adventure of serving
God’s purpose in one of the
most broken communities
in America.
Why does diversity matter
in a Christian organization?
Is there a biblical precedent
for creating space for
diversity at every level of
leadership? How do you
create space for diversity
while acknowledging the
dignity of every individual?
Explore these questions
and more through personal
stories and biblical texts
from the perspective of an
African-American pastor of
a multi-ethnic church.
“Everything is bigger in
Texas” is true for many
great things, but it is
also applies to some
sad realities: largest
uninsured population
in the country, greatest
shortage of primary care
providers, health disparities
and unequal access to
healthcare and resources
- the list goes on. But God
is working across Texas.
Baylor Scott and White
(BSWH), one of the biggest
healthcare systems in Texas,
has adopted “To care for all
individuals…. as a Christian
ministry of healing” as its
mission. This session will
look at innovative care
programs, community care
clinics, and collaborations
to address social
determinants of health that
are happening in Texas’
largest metro center to
address the physical, social
and spiritual needs of their
neighbors.
The more divided and
spiritually confused our
nation and world become
and the more beyond social
and political solutions our
problems appear to grow,
the more we find ourselves
crying out with aching
hearts, “How long O Lord
will you wait? Rain your Holy
Spirit on us and rescue,
heal, and restore us! Bring
us times of refreshing and
revival!” Do we actually
know what we’re asking
for? And are we and our
ministries prepared when
the Lord answers in the
affirmative? How can and
should we be preparing
now for an outpouring of
grace in our communities
in the foreseeable future?
This session is not typical
Sunday School lesson, but a
call within our community to
understand the times and
know what we should do.
A growing body of
psychological literature is
placing emphasis on faith,
meaning, and purpose as
having significant roles in
trauma outcomes, both
positive and negative. The
purpose of this workshop
will be to increase the
clinician’s understanding
of the spiritual and mental
health sequelae following
traumatic events, how to
navigate unique cultural
and individual factors that
can impact the healing
process, and practical
steps the clinician can take
to improve resilience and
growth before and after
traumatic events.
There is so much joy when
you know you are walking
in God’s will. However, that
joy can quickly dissipate
when we run headlong
into the realities of life. It is
especially easy to become
discouraged working in
underserved areas. We can
lose sight of what is important,
and find ourselves
wavering from our calling.
Using concepts from
Henri Nouwen’s Life of the
Beloved, Dr. Thomas will
exposit Luke 3-4 contrasting
the sweet voice of our
Father with the dark lies
of the enemy. This timely
message will encourage
you to contemplate your
motivation for serving in the
hard places.
For 25 years, Crossroad
Health Center has provided
quality care to adult and
pediatric patients in underresourced
communities in
and around Cincinnati. In
2016, Crossroad recognized
the need for quality,
wholistic prenatal care,
and created a program
model designed to impact
the high infant mortality
rate in their county. This
session describes how they
assessed the need, and
implemented their prenatal
care program in partnership
with a family medicine
residency, a for-profit
hospital and a safety-net
hospital. There will be a
review of resources, and
guidelines on negotiating
strategic partnerships to
insure quality in serving
a high-risk underserved
population.
The intensity of medical
training and the pouring
out of ourselves in medical
practice can lead us to feel
there is nothing left to give
at home, in relationships or
for personal self-care. Could
our pursuit of “balance”
be harmful, and could it
be leading us away from
Christ’s desire to unify all
areas of our lives under his
Lordship. During this highly
interactive session, we will
propose a reframing of the
culturally popular idea of
work-life balance.
Happy patients become
healthy patients. They
let us make their lives
better, and they make
our jobs a pleasure. But
they rarely come that way.
First encounters often can
determine the patient’s
experience. A simple yet
overlooked component
to maximizing patient
satisfaction is the practice
of great customer service
skills. With such a heavy
focus on improving the
patient experience, this
interactive session will focus
on the various components
of providing excellent
customer service, even in
challenging settings.
Scripture has much to say
and show to us about how
we can reflect the character
and the heart of God in
the provision of health care
and in health care ministry.
Specifically, we will look
at the Biblical concepts of
compassion, shalom, loving
God and neighbor, and
God’s design for us to be
dependent upon Him. God
transforms His people as
they serve and reflect Him
and His heart.
The increasingly stressful
healthcare environment
limits clinicians’ ability to
provide whole-person care
that considers the physical,
psychological, social, and
spiritual needs of those
with chronic disabling
illness. Spiritual care teams
have been shown to help
clinicians stay efficient and
provide quality spiritual
care at the same time in a
wide variety of inpatient
and outpatient, secular and
faith-based care environments.
In this seminar, the
author of CMDA’s popular
Grace Prescriptions course
will describe an exciting
way for Christian health
professionals to form teams
to provide whole-person
care in most any healthcare
environment and the capacity
to increase the quality of
patient care.
In this panel discussion,
a multi-disciplinary team
from Lawndale Christian
Health Center, Chicago,
led by clinical psychologist,
Kathryn McLean, will focus
on the opportunities and
challenges encountered
in the development
of Medically Assisted
Treatment services for
opioid and substance
abuse patients, including 1)
fostering a patient-centered
approach to engaging
patient’s needs and
experiences 2) developing
processes and capacity
for interdisciplinary team
members 3) showing and
sharing the love of God
through relational care.
The church is God’s
therapeutic community,
intended to minister healing
to the nations (all types
of people). Healing in the
scriptures is always a holistic
thing, which includes
mental and behavioral
health issues. Yet too often
the church shies away from
its mission when it comes
to mental health, adding
to the stigma instead of
promoting healing. This
session will walk through
a pathway to establishing
a mental health/licensed
professional counseling
ministry in local churches
and in charitable medical
clinics.
The present political
climate comes as a shock to
many of us who have fought
for years to see a more just
health care system and who
have committed to help
aliens, refugees and asylee
seekers in this country.
What does this mean to
the poorest and most
vulnerable among us, and
what should followers of
Jesus do? This session will
explore the rich tradition
of Biblical advocacy on
behalf of the poorest
and most vulnerable
throughout history. What
does advocacy mean for
us today? What does it
mean to have a prophetic
voice? How can we make a
difference not just providing
good care to individuals but
also advocating for a more
just society that reflects the
Kingdom of God?
(repeat)
This workshop is designed
to be spiritually refreshing
and encouraging for those
growing weary or feeling
burnt out. Drawing on
many years of fighting the
good fight of faith, Dr.
Bob Paeglow, founder
for Koinonia Primary Care
in Albany, NY, will share
testimony from his own life
and ministry to illustrate
principles that will help you
to keep on keeping on.
Rooted in Hebrews 12:2
“For the joy set before Him
Jesus endured the cross”,
participants will experience
insight in how to cultivate
joy in their ministry.
Bringing effective change to
an organization requires a
plan. Logic models provide
a visual blueprint for how
changes unfold and what
expected changes may occur.
They are useful for both
new and existing programs
and initiatives, as they can
help clarify program strategies,
identify appropriate
targets, write effective grant
proposals, and make planning
time more efficient.
This session will give participants
an overview of a logic
model and will walk through
the steps of creating a picture
of the steps needed to
bring change. Participants
will learn how logic models
can be used during planning,
implementation, and
evaluation stages.
Your first board was likely
recruited among your circle
of acquaintances, rounding
up those that would provide
the support you felt was most
needed at the time. Now
you are growing. So is your
staff, your budget, your need
for space – and the need
for some tough decisions.
You need a different type
of board member. This
session addresses the critical
process of board transition
that happens when there
is a mix of founding board
members and newly recruited
community members
that may have a different
expectation of what board
membership means. How
do you keep the new board
members engaged? How
do you temper the culture of
entitledment that founding
members sometimes bring to
the table? How do you phase
out board members that
perhaps need to move on?
“We envision a movement
of God’s people who
choose daily to bring
healing to marginalized
communities in the name
of Jesus.” This is your
opportunity to meet with
the leadership of CCHF
to hear what is being
done to strengthen and
encourage this growing
movement. Steve Noblett
and Board members will
share about the strengths
and bottlenecks that affect
those committed to living
out the gospel through
healthcare among the
poor, and what we can
do together to nurture
and develop the Christian
mission in healthcare in our
nation.
CCHF Organizational Directory
The list of clinics in this directory is only a partial list of the Christian clinics that make up the CCHF community. Over 300 Christian clinics serve
under-resourced communities in the U.S. Hundreds of other ministries address health issues through screening, coaching and limited services. And
thousands of other Christians are courageously living out the gospel while working in non-faith-based clinics.
www.CCHF.org features a more complete directory of clinics that serve medically underserved populations in a distinctively Christian way. Don’t see
your clinic in our directory? Our directory grows each week. Visit CCHF.org and tell us about your clinic so people across America can know what
God is doing in your area.
