SELWYN TIMES Latest Christchurch news at Wednesday April 4 2018 23 SPORTS Lincoln High girls give strong T20 performance at Canty tournament LINCOLN TENNIS Club were unable to hold their prize-giving tournament due to wet courts last weekend. However, the wet weather didn’t stop keen juniors from having a hit out before and after the prize-giving ceremony. The club has a great group of juniors, with many returning every year, and a growing group of beginners in their coaching programme. Prize winners: •The coach’s choice certificates for beginners: Ariana Johnson, Amelia Preston and Aila Wilson. •The coach’s LINCOLN High School finished third at the secondary schools Canterbury girls’ cricket tournament recently. The tournament consisted of four rounds of Twenty20 games played across two days. The Lincoln team had some girls new to the game and some experienced players. Melissa Banks was the star with bat in hand, scoring two centuries and finishing as the tournament’s top run-scorer with 339 runs. She scored 102 of Lincoln’s 165 runs in their opening round 60-run win against Villa Maria College. In their second match, Lincoln suffered a 37-run loss to Cashmere High School. Lincoln defeated Rangi Ruru Girls’ School by five runs in their final group match to qualify for the third and fourth play-off match against Burnside High School. choice certificates for primary school grade: Anton Lilley and Taylor Goddard. •The coach’s choice certificate for the high school grade: Ben Harding. •The interclub certificates for outstanding performance in the primary division: Abi Redman and Conrad IMPRESSIVE: Lincoln High’s girls cricket team finished third at the Canterbury secondary school tournament, defeating some of Christchurch’s top schools. In the play-off, Lincoln batted first and set an imposing 190 from their 20 overs thanks to an unbeaten knock of 132 from Banks. Lincoln then restricted Burnside to 156/3 to win by 34 runs and claim third spot. The tournament was won by Christchurch Girls’ High School which will now represent the Canterbury region at the national tournament later in the year. Juniors have fun on wet court after prize-giving FUN: Wet weather may have cancelled Lincoln’s prize-giving tournament but it didn’t stop the youngsters from getting involved.
