SELWYN TIMES Latest Christchurch news at Wednesday April 4 2018 25 Weedons teen goes international • By Gordon Findlater LACHIE STOVE departed for England today on a six-month scholarship which will see him trade in the Weedons club, and his parents’ house in Leeston, for the Maften Hall Cricket Club and life in a 19th-century mansion. Stove, 17, is one of two recipients for this year’s Willows’ Cricket Scholarship. The scholarship will see him play cricket during the New Zealand winter and live at the Maften House where he will be hosted by Sir Hugh and Lady Blackett. The original seat of the Blackett family is now run as a four-star hotel, spa and golf course. “I know a few people that have gone and they’ve said that they had an awesome time,” said Stove. “I’m going to have a great time but it’s a bit frightening leaving home to find out what’s waiting for me there.” Outside of cricket, Stove will work at Maften Hall on a variety of tasks such as working behind the golf course’s bar. One job he may be tailor-made for could be a more hands on approach at the 27-hole course. Stove has grown up knowing a thing or two about golf course upkeep. His father is a former greenkeeper at Templeton golf course. The bowling all-rounder has just finished playing senior cricket for Weedons over the summer. He had a success in the Canterbury Country premier one-day competition taking 14 wickets at an average of 13.50. “I’ve really enjoyed playing country cricket again after finishing school at St Thomas. Being able to play against senior guys and learning from them has been great.” Stove will be joined by Rhys Petrie from Waitaki Boys’ High SPORTS School on the scholarship which has been running with the Willows since 2003. “We look for an all-round kid with a good head on his shoulders. Lachie fits that bill,” said Willows founder Mike Dormer. NEW HOME: The original seat of the Blackett family, is now run as a four-star hotel, spa and golf course. VACATION: Lachie Stove began his trip to England today as part of a sixmonth cricket scholarship. He is also a handy rugby player, playing at first XV level for St Thomas and rep level for Canterbury Country. HEAT PUMP SALE NOW ON!
