Safety ambassadors for EL schools<br />

THE South African National<br />

Institute for Crime Prevention<br />

and the Reintegration of<br />

Offenders (Nicro), supported by<br />

key stakeholders recently hosted<br />

a graduation ceremony for pupils<br />

who participated in their<br />

two-year safety ambassador<br />

programme.<br />

Nicro, a national<br />

non-governmental organisation<br />

that provides comprehensive<br />

crime prevention services,<br />

partnered with the South African<br />

Police Services (SAPS),<br />

Education Safer Schools, as well<br />

as the departments of<br />

correctional services and social<br />

development in the programme<br />

that started on April 1 2016 and<br />

which aims to prevent crime in<br />

schools.<br />

M u l e ya said Nicro had chosen<br />

Nompendulo High School in<br />

Zwelitsha (King William’s Town),<br />

Ulwazi High School<br />

(Mdantsane), as well as<br />

Sakhikamva High School in<br />

Nompendulo (Beacon Bay), as<br />

these were crime hotspots.<br />

A total of 30 pupils were<br />

chosen from each school.<br />

“As part of their training, the<br />

pupils were taught life skills and<br />

adventure therapy. To prepare<br />

them for tough situations, they<br />

were mentored on bullying,<br />

gangsterism, gender stereotypes<br />

and teenage pregnancy.”<br />

Mluleki Mbi said the pupils who<br />

had graduated, would train other<br />

pupils from neighbouring<br />

schools on the prevention of<br />

crime.<br />

“The graduates will also<br />

participate in community<br />

initiatives and events that are<br />

related to crime prevention in<br />

our schools and the community.”<br />

Nicro was appealing to<br />

community members for their<br />

support with funding to support<br />

more pupils and schools.<br />
