TENNIS TENNIS TENNIS TENNIS TENNIS Court Circular Spring 2018 Tennis captain’s report After coming through a very cold winters, I’m sure many of you, like me, are looking forward to the spring and summer months and playing plenty of tennis. While the weather has been against us the club has still been busy, with mix-ins, group coaching, winter league matches, the Warwickshire LTA Awards in which the Boat Club played a strong part, and a tennis committee busily preparing for the season ahead. As a club we are fortunate to have a very capable and committed group of people volunteering in the current tennis committee. To see who is part of the team, please see our website or the tennis noticeboard at the club. Following the changes last year to our governance and the creation of a new strategy for the Tennis Section, we are continuing on our journey to be the best tennis club continuously satisfying and impressing members with how we operate. If we can do more to enhance your membership of WBC, please use the new Suggestions Box that is posted right next to the front door to the Clubhouse, or send an email to and we’d be very happy to review what we can do. As a reminder, we have a strategy for excellence in three core aspects of our Tennis Club and we spend almost all of our committee time on these subjects: • Social tennis - our various mix-ins and group coaching sessions continue to be enjoyable and very well attended. We aim to continue and strengthen these sessions during 2018. This year we are also making a bigger effort with our tennis-related social events - Peter Leopold is enthusiastically leading us in this area. • Competitive tennis - we have had a range of excellent results in the last year. We continue to compete in local, national and even international competitions and it is Club championships 2018 Online tournament entry and tickets available on ClubSpark, manual entry by club office. Entries by Saturday 21st April. Tournament starts Wednesday 2nd May. Finals day 1.30 p.m. Saturday 30th June, (food from 6.00 p.m.) great to see so many members involved in one way or another in representing the club this way. • Facilities - in the last few months we have cleaned courts, replaced nets, improved fencing, upgraded floodlights and completed a thorough health & safety review. We have big ambitions for the future and are currently going through some due diligence and proper process of planning, gathering quotations and considering our options. We wish our facilities to be something we are all proud of. There is one other initiative being started this year related to sponsorship. As we consider developing and maintaining excellent facilities, social tennis and competitive tennis for all of us to enjoy, we have to think about how we resource it. We have had experience working with a few generous members who have wished to contribute financially to the club to help us deliver a range of initiatives, from providing tennis to people in the community to sponsoring our teams’ match kit. We believe there is an opportunity for us to do more in this area in a way that is considerate of our club’s heritage yet helps us build toward the future. This is a clubwide initiative, so we are working with other sports sections to develop a plan. If you have any experience of sponsorship programmes or interest in getting involved, please contact Nick Peall at tennis. With that said, we have a fantastic year to look forward to.
