Well, to be very honest I never knew that Alaska can be so much surprising. But as
I kept on searching and studying about this American gem, I came up with very

1) The forefathers of the contemporary Native Americans traveled from Asia to the
present-day Alaska around 12,000 years ago through Beringia- the “land bridge”,
that is now known as Beringia.
2) The Native people of Alaska and the Arctic Circle do not like to be called by the
term “Eskimo”. Actually, they find it offensive just the way Native Americans

think of the term “Indians”. The indigenous people of Alaska are actually the Inuits
and Aleuts.
3) Alaska was actually discovered by the Europeans in the year of 1741. The
famous Danish explorer Vitus Jonassen Bering spotted it during an expedition
from Siberia.
4) Alaska is just 50 miles away from Russia, and also it shares its maritime border
with the same country towards the west across the Bering Strait.
5) Alaska may now have become an American state, but it wasn’t until 1867 when
this happened. The United States purchased Alaska for $7.2 million from Russia
on 3 rd January in the year of 1867.
6) Some of the people don’t even know that Alaska is one of the 50 states of the
United States of America. It became the 49 th state of the USA on 3 rd of January in
the year of 1959.

7) Another thing that blew my mind was that Alaska is the biggest state in
the USA. In fact, it is double the size of Texas, which is the 2 nd largest state in the
USA. And yet another mind boggling thing is that if Alaska was to be made a
country, it would become the twentieth largest country of the world.
8) While we are speaking about the size of Alaska, let’s talk about its coastline as
well. Its coastline is even longer than the coastlines of all the American states
combined.
9) If you think Alaska is a place filled with ice and snow, then get ready for a
shock! There is a sand desert with dunes that is 150 feet in height in this icy cold
American state.
10) Recently, Lauren Jauregui a band member of the famous American girl group
Fifth Harmony was arrested for marijuana possession in the Virginia. While in
most of the American states, Marijuana is illegal, Alaska is an exception to this.
Marijuana is legal for personal use in this American state. It has been legal in
Alaska since the year 1975.

11) We all are aware of the Pearl Harbor incident during the World War II. We
know that a lot of Americans were killed in that ghastly event. But your heart will
be broken to know that more Americans were killed or injured in Alaska in defense
while the Japanese invaded this American state during the World War II. Now you

12) The city of Fairbanks that is also known as the “Golden Heart City” is the sight
of the beautiful Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights which can be
seen on an average of 243 days in one year. These lights are actually created by

13) People of Alaska are very eco-friendly and thus it is the state with the highest
percentage of people who prefer to walk while going to work.

need to do something with the crime rate. It has been estimated that Alaska has the
highest rape rate in the United States of America.
15) You won’t come across any billboards in the American state of Alaska as these
are banned in this state, just like in Vermont and Hawaii.
