the funniest answers
I’ve ever encountered.
Although I’ve never met
her, I know beyond a
shadow of a doubt that
she is one queen I must
experience.
Her show is called “Born
Again,” and she will be
unveiling it for all of New
York at the Triad Theater,
April 10-12. She will be
touring the East Coast
during spring as well. Her
shows sell out quickly,

What can the audience expect from
your show?
My new show for 2018 is “Born Again,”
which is a perfect title to draw in those
critical, godless New Yorkers! It’s an
exciting multimedia extravaganza of
faith, fragrance and femininity. I do it
all with new music, new videos, new
audience interaction and most important
for spiritual wellness, new outfits!
What was
your original
inspiration for
doing your
act?
I don’t think my
act is inspired
as much as
required. I feel
an obligation
to share my
beauty since I
won the title
Miss Richfield
1981, in my
hometown of
Richfield, Minn.
It was an honor
to receive the
sash and the
crown, along
with a $50 U.S.
savings bond
and a brandnew
power
lawn mower.
It was very
similar to Miss
America, if
you’ve heard of
that.
Tell us more about the premise behind
your name. That sounds like a fun story.
I only go by my beauty title, Miss
Richfield 1981. I never release my name
publically, mostly for privacy concerns
and a sort of manly woman back in
Minnesota who rides a Harley and finds
me irresistible. If you’ll notice, I also must
include the year of my beauty pageant,
1981, so people know it’s me and not
Miss Richfield 1982, who got heavy.
What sets you apart from other
queens?
I’m pretty. I’m from Minnesota. And I use
my real, lady-like baritone voice for all my
music. In this crazy world of electronics,
headphones and TV, I think people are
yearning for something natural and real.
Is there a queen that you most admire,
and if so why?
Anderson Cooper is always #1 with
me! I adore his smarts, his no-nonsense
hairstyle and the fact that he calls Gloria
Vanderbilt
“mother.”
What do you
like best about
performing
live?
Immediate
gratification!
There is nothing
like it! When
you’re in front
of a crowd, you
hear what they
like and don’t
like. You get
energy from
the people.
Plus, I think
I’m prettier up
close, and I get
my money right
away.
Are you
working on
any new
projects, tours
or anything
you’d like to
mention?
I’ve been
touring the East Coast this spring, so
I’ll be continuing on to Washington,
D.C., Atlanta, Tampa, along with Atlantis
Events’ Cancun resort, all before I head
to Ptown for the summer. I’ll be doing
shows at the Pilgrim House on the east
side of town from the end of May to
the middle of September. It’s a nonstop
party, so plan to attend. But coming to
NYC is always such a highlight for me—I
love the crowds, the hustle and bustle on
the streets and the gals who wear tennis
shoes with their dress clothes! I love the
Big Apple!

What Is Mytesi (crofelemer)?
Mytesi is a prescription medicine used to
improve symptoms of noninfectious diarrhea
(diarrhea not caused by a bacterial, viral,

Do Not Take Mytesi if you have diarrhea
caused by an infection. Before you start
Mytesi, your doctor and you should make sure
your diarrhea is not caused by an infection
(such as bacteria, virus, or parasite).
Possible Side Effects of Mytesi Include:
• Upper respiratory tract infection (sinus, nose,
and throat infection)
• Bronchitis (swelling in the tubes that carry air
to and from your lungs)
• Cough
• Flatulence (gas)
• Increased bilirubin (a waste product when
red blood cells break down)

‘EL CORONEL NO TIENE QUIEN LE ESCRIBA’
Actor Paul Montoya has pursued a dream of working with director Jorge
Ali Triana, a dream that has finally come true for him. Currently appearing
in “El Coronel No Tiene Quien Le Escriba,” Montoya now picks and
chooses his career projects.
I shared questions and answers with Montoya regarding his professional
acting career, his life philosophies and his influences.
Rewinding to an interview from Mother’s
Day 2014, the best word that described
Montoya was a “dreamer.” Aside from a
new tattoo, how much has changed since
we last spoke?
Thank you for having me back! Actually,
two new tattoos: a butterfly on the back
of my leg (meaning transformation) and
the one lower my chest, one of my favorite
Peter Pan quotes: “I do believe in fairies.” I
feel like I’m a better version of myself—still
making mistakes, yes, but at least I’m more
aware of them and more aware of what I
like and what I don’t like. In the past years I
somehow learned how to put myself first in
order to be there for others and discovered
other passions to help me out of the
routine, like traveling.

Tell me a little bit about the career you
are trying to pursue. Are you actively
acting at Repertorio Español theatre?
I continue working on my career. Of course
some changes happened. I decided to
be more selective when I was choosing
the projects that I was thrilled to work in.
Yes, I’m actively working at Repertorio
Español with a new show, “El Coronel No
Tiene Quien Le Escriba” (No One Writes
to the Colonel) by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
and directed by Jorge Alí Triana. As you
remember, this was one of my dreams
to work with this director, and now I can
actually check that off the bucket list.
Dreams actually come true. It wasn’t easy,
but it was worth it!
Where would you like to be in five years,
professionally?
I currently don’t have a crazy, determined
vision about the next five years. I’ve
learned how to live more in the moment,
of course involving where I want to be in
my future. Meaning I’m studying different
ideas and projects and [will] see where
this beautiful life will take me.
From the looks of your Facebook, you
seem
to be traveling quite a bit. Any exciting
places you would like to share and the
special memories behind the travel?
Traveling is one of my passions. I had the
chance to explore more in the past years.
It’s like a different world everywhere I go. I
don’t like to stay in fancy hotels or do just
all the regular stuff; I like to almost become
a local and explore, taste and live the real
experience. So I have crazy and beautiful
memories of each place. I can’t wait to
keep traveling and discovering the whole
world.

Is there a moment in your life that
changed the whole trajectory
(course or path) of it?
I have a couple of them, but I
think moving to the U.S. changed
my whole life. Now I’m trying to
combine both the Colombian and
the now New Yorker and get the
best of both for new chapters.
If you could pick two famous
parents to be your parents,
who would you pick and why?
Interesting one. I was raised by
strong women, and I feel like if I
have to choose I will identify with
powerful, kind and loving women
like the ones in my family. I will say
names like Madonna, Angelina
Jolie, Ellen, Michelle Obama. Girl
power.
Knowing what you know now,
what advice would you give your
younger self?
To stop second guessing and just
believe and love yourself. In order
to help and love others, you have to
start with yourself.

STEALING
OUR SAFE SPACES?
It’s no secret that the gays have officially
penetrated mainstream society. It’s
gone beyond marriage, as well as our
predecessor’s wildest dreams.
“RuPaul’s Drag Race” has our straight
co-workers gagged. Trans people are
earning positions of power in politics.
Parents are supporting young boys by
buying them makeup and dolls. The
world is certainly changing, but let’s
not kid ourselves into believing it has
completely changed, sweeties.
Unfortunately, there’s still a good chunk
of hate out there. That’s why it’s nice
to go to a queer space, where we feel
protected and free. So what happens
if our spaces disappear? We need to
recognize this potential reality. While we
knock down borders and claim our right
to equal opportunities, we find ourselves
in a bit of a predicament. In exchange
for being a part of the straight world,
they expect to be a part of ours. Equality
continues to come at a cost.
You can barely go to a gay bar these
days that’s not flooded with herds
of women. I don’t mean gay or
queer women, who may actually feel
threatened at some gay bars. That’s
a whole other conversation. No, I’m
talking about straight women who come
to our bars, sometimes without the
accompaniment of a queer person.
They sashay their way to us with their
bachelorette crowns and selfie game
faces because they want a real life
RuPaul experience. They say they like
our music better. They say they don’t
feel threatened by gay men.

Sometimes, however, it may feel like
they invade our spaces for the novelty.
Often times, it seems they don’t
understand that this isn’t an act; it’s
our culture. We’re not here for their
entertainment. In fact, they’re putting us
in danger.
Our safe spaces are vanishing. It’s
not only bars disappearing; all of our
spaces are on a decline. It’s our cafes,
bookstores and neighborhoods that are
endangered. In Brooklyn, some of my
favorite queer spaces have either closed
or turned into hetero hangouts. To find
a seat at Outpost, a once popular queer
café, I first have to sift through a sea of
straights. At C’mon Everybody, I feel
weird dancing with other guys unless it’s
specifically a gay party.
The worst part is that many straight
people don’t even recognize what
they’re doing because they don’t know
the history of these spaces. For them, it’s
all just fun and games. Here’s the T: The
queer community is being displaced and
is going through a social gentrification.

But isn’t this what we want? Don’t we
want equality? Isn’t it only fair to let
them in our spaces if we want to be in
theirs?
No, I don’t think this is what we want,
nor do I think it’s fair. Sure, this may
sound a bit hypocritical, especially
considering most of these outsiders
mean no harm. However, we need
to remember that although we’ve
made progress in obtaining equality,
we still don’t fully have it. We’re still
not legally protected in every sense,
and don’t even get me started on the
atrocities that happen to international
gays. Many queer people still feel
uncomfortable around an all-straight
crowd, and some straight people still
act violently towards LGBTQIA+ folks,
especially toward trans people. Until
our idealistic, equal world becomes
a reality, we need to protect our safe
spaces.
Next time you go to a queer space,
especially a bar, remember you’re not
there alone. You’re sharing this space
with a whole gaggle of gays. No one
wants to decipher who’s gay or not
before striking up a flirty conversation.
No one is trying to masc up at the
bars or talk quietly about gay politics
in cafes.
Now, don’t get me wrong: I love
bringing a straight companion with
me sometimes, so of course I’m not
demanding you leave your hetero
sidekicks back home. All I’m asking is
for you to be mindful of our communal
spaces. Find what’s comfortable
for you but that’s also respectful to
others. Remember, even if you’re
comfortable enough in your sexuality
to be surrounded by any crowd, not
everyone else is. We all have to play
our part in preserving the safe spaces
we have left.

PART ONE
THE LAST DATE
Flashback: two years ago.
AJ (my most recent ex)
and I had been on several
dates, but he was being
standoffish. I couldn’t tell if
he was playing hard to get
or if he didn’t like me at all.
He really upset me when
one of his best friends was
visiting from out of town,
and he specifically told me I
couldn’t go out with them.
So, instead, I went on a
date. Enter C, the chef.
C took me to his friend’s
restaurant in Brooklyn,
where the seafood
was delicious and the
champagne ever-flowing. I
could tell he was nervous,
wearing a full suit, while I
showed up in jeans and a
black v-neck.
I liked C. I enjoyed getting
to know him while we ate—
but I was only half-paying
attention. The other half
of me was focused on AJ,
thinking about him out with
his friend, making fun of
sappy, pathetic little me.
Why didn’t he want me to
meet his friend? Why was
he so intent on building a
wall between us, when we
were so good together?
After dinner, C wanted to
get drinks—and I didn’t
want to go home and be
alone with my insecurities.
We found a dive bar
around the corner, ordering
strong cranberry vodkas
and using the last of my
cash on a photo booth.
I started to let loose and
have fun, pushing thoughts
of AJ away. If he didn’t
want to spend time with
me, I’d spend time with
someone who did.
Well-intoxicated, I decided
to show C a game. “You
put your hand over the
candle,” I said, indicating
the votive between us,
“and see if you can stand
the fire long enough to put
it out.”
“That’s stupid,” he
chuckled. It was: A straight
guy showed it to me once.
The point of the game is
to get the other person,
who’s never played, to put
their hand over
the candle—and
then you put your
hand over theirs,
making them burn
themselves.
“Yeah. I don’t know
why I thought of
that just now.” My
back pocket buzzed:
a text message.
Blurry-eyed, I
peeked at my
screen: AJ. I took
the phone all the
way out of my pants
and read it:
“Hey. I told my
friend about you
and she really wants
to meet you. Wanna
come over to East
of Eighth?”
“Everything OK?” C
asked. I don’t know
why I did this, but I put
my hand over the candle.
“Wha—Stop!” He tried to
grab my hand, but I held
strong until the flame went
out.
Maybe I was punishing
myself. I’m just not sure
if I was punishing myself
because I went on a date
when I knew I was falling
in love with AJ, or because
I was leaving an amazing
date to go see him.
Either way, my hand hurt
for two weeks—and that
was the last date I went on
before AJ and I became an
official couple.
