SZÉCHENYI CHAIN BRIDGE
One of the most outstanding architectural
sites of Budapest, part of the World Heritage,
symbol of the city. It was inaugurated in 1849
as the first bridge connecting Pest and Buda
making a big difference in the development
of the capital. The construction was initiated
by Count Stephan Szechényi who is usually
referred to as one of the greatest Hungarians.
The bridge is „guarded” by two stone lions on
both ends.
From here you can get a great view of
the Pest side.
If you happen to zoom in more on the Parliament
building, you may find yourself peeping
at a Parliament session or you can read the
clock of the St. Stephen’s Basilica.
• TIP: Shoot some pictures with the lions at
the foot of the bridge or from the middle of
the bridge with the beautiful view of the Pest
and the Buda river banks.
THE BUDA CASTLE DISTRICT
SUGGESTED ROUTE:
BUDA CASTLE FUNICULAR
On the hilly Buda side of the city – at the end
of the Széchenyi Chain Bridge (Clark Ádám tér),
next to the tunnel – you will find the lower terminus
of the Buda Castle Funicular Railway. This
railway will take you up to the Castle within 2
minutes, and during that time you can see the
splendid view of the majority of the city. Arriving
at the top, you will be facing the Office of
the President of Hungary, the Sándor Palace.
The castle itself (housing the National Library –
named also after Széchenyi – and the Hungarian
National Gallery) is also right there.
The railway was initiated by Count Ödön Széchenyi,
the son of Count István Széchenyi, and was
inaugurated on 2nd March 1870. This railway
Funicular. The panoramic view of Budapest
is best observedfrom the Danube. This is so
true that this view is even part of the UNESCO
World Heritage list. (Photo: BKK)
was the only easy way up to the Castle Hill
until 1928, when the bus line (now number 16)
was opened. Széchenyi was granted permission
to build the hill railway in May 1868, and construc-
tion started already in July. The engineering
plans of the funicular were prepared by Ödön
Jaruszek. The construction operations were
managed first by Jaruszek and later on by Henrik
Wolfahrt who also reworked the building plans.
At the lower terminal of the track, a bigger and
more impressive dispatch hall was erected to
house the engi- neering structures as well, while
at the upper terminal, a simpler reception building
was set up. Motive power was supplied by
a steam engine positioned at the lower terminal.
• To get the best view, get into the first wagon.
The standard gauge track with a 30-degree angle
of inclination was 95 meters long, where 50 metres
difference in altitude had to be surmounted.
This technical masterpiece, the second funicular
of the world had come to a sad end during the
siege of Budapest in late 1944. Shortly before
Christmas, on the 20th of December a bombing
destroyed the railway. In the heavily war-stricken
Budapest, the priorities were different and a
decision was made to clear away the remains
of the railway. But in 1984, the Budapest Public
Transport Company (BKV) and the local authorities
decided that it was time for revival. The new
funicular looks just like the old one – to an extent
that at the opening party many thought that they
have tickets to the old funicular!
The two cars, named Gellért and Margit operate
all year round between 7:30 and 21:50, but be
careful: on Mondays of uneven weeks, essential
maintenance is carried out in the morning.
BUDA CASTLE
CASTLE HILL TUNNEL
The idea of building a tunnel under Castle
Hill came up at the same time when Chain
Bridge was built, however, it was only
constructed later. (It is 340 meters long, its
height at the entrances is 10 meters, inside:
8 meters, its width is 9.5 meters.)
DID YOU KNOW THAT...
...that until 1918 – similar to the bridge –
a toll was to be paid for crossing the tunnel?
...that next to its entrance there was the
quarters of the bridge master, which was
used until 2007.
LABYRINTH IN
THE BUDA CASTLE
The half-a-million-year-old tufa isolated cave
cabins have started to be linked with each
other in the mediaeval ages. The cave which
was made permeable this way has started
to fulfil various roles after this – wine vaults,
torturing chambers, prisons and hideaways
during the war all harmonised perfectly next
to each other. Dracula was imprisoned here
too. Visit the amazing Dracula’s Chamber
and Panopticum in the Labyrinth open 10–19
every day. Buda Castle – 9 Uri St (Dist. 1)
HAVE FUN
GREEN ISLAND
IN THE HEART
OF BUDAPEST
If you feel like escaping from the city’s bustle, Margaret
Island can offer a lot of great opportunities. The whole
island is a huge park, loved by the city dwellers, who
come here for recreation and entertainment. There are
remains of sacral architecture from the Middle Ages,
promenades, special plants, small ponds and nice fountains
and a lot of possibilities to enjoy yourself: you can
take a nice walk in the Japanese Garden, mount on a
bringóhintó (a bycicle with four wheels), look at the ruins
of the old church and convent. If you want to do some
sports, you can use the running track or go the swimming
pool or the beach. From June there are exhibitions
in the former Water Tower and special performances on
the renewed open-air stage.
Come with us
and enjoy the atmosphere
of the Tropics!
Have you ever heard how the alligators howl? If not, now is
high time to visit the Tropicarium, the shark zoo, where not
only the mentioned animals, but there are hundreds of
exotic reptiles, tropical and freshwater fishes, free-flying
birds, small monkeys too, which you can
admire.
oom escape GAMES
Room escape is a genre of entertainment with friends. No, it’s not the one you play on your
computer, and neither the one you watch in a movie. It is real, and you play the main role. Imagine,
that you and your friends are locked up in a dark room and you have no more than 60 minutes to get
out. However, it is not easy at all: you will have to solve mind-bending puzzles using clues and your
time is expiring – all these causing adrenaline-inducing claustrophobia.
Besides ruin pubs, room escape is another crazy place to visit, a real Hungaricum!
Most places are arranged around different themes or stories, and other than escaping, you will have
to fulfill other tasks as well. For example: you will have to get out of a creepy cellar or you will have to
investigate a murder case, defuse a bomb or rob a bank... Will you succeed?
Best luck, and keep in mind: even the smallest details count.
RUIN PUBS
Ruin – pubs are especially popular among young locals and tourists alike. But what is a ruin pub?
Literally saying, it is a pub in a ruin. These pubs are situated in the heart of Budapest in derelict buildings,
cellars or unused outdoor spaces, which have been transformed into friendly, pleasingly chaotic bars.
Designers had no limitations, they could use anything: old machines, bicycles, sewing machines and
typewriters mixed with worn-down furniture, modern paintings and graffiti creating psychedelic interiors
which change from place to place – no matter where you go, you will find something interesting. While
visiting Budapest, make sure you have a pint of beer in one of the ruin pubs. But watch out: the atmosphere
is addicting, and soon you will find yourself talking to someone next to you. In most of the places
there are live concerts as well. So have a drink or more, and by the time you have a look at your watch,
it is already dawning. Relax, everything is all right, after all this is why you came to Budapest – to have fun!
