North Suburban YMCA celebrates 50 

years at the heart of the community 

The North Suburban 

YMCA, winner of 11 North 

Shore Choice Awards, 

will celebrate 50 years of 

service at its Northbrook 

facility in 2018-19. With 

hundreds of programs for 

all ages, the Y continues 

to promote youth development, 

healthy living, and 

social responsibility for 

thousands of participants 

every year. 

For its golden anniversary, 

the Y will host a 

variety of special events 

including a day-long Y 

Fest, and launch a series of 

transformative health and 

programming initiatives 

that will guide the Y for 

the next 50 years. 

Generations of families 

have relied on the 

NSYMCA, learning to 

swim, shooting hoops and 

practicing ballet. People 

who grew up at the Y 

now bring their own kids 

to enjoy its nurturing, enriching 

programs. In summer, 

the NSYMCA offers 

an exciting assortment of 

day camp programs for 

children in pre-K through 

junior high, delivering a 

fun, safe, and memorable 

summer experience. Flexible 

scheduling and affordable 

pricing make Y camps 

available to all. 

Much more than just 

a place to work out, the 

NSYMCA is a charitable 

organization that keeps 

its programs affordable 

for everyone through its 

Strong Kids Financial Assistance 

Fund. One out 

of five people using the 

Y receives Strong Kids 

scholarships to pay for 

classes, camps and other 

life-changing activities. 

The Y additionally provides 

many programs to 

support individuals with 

special needs, from peermentored 

dance classes to 

a popular Special Olympics 

swim team.

every second grader to 

swim in the 2 Seconds 2 

Long Program to Integrated

diabetes prevention, blood 

pressure monitoring and 

enhance fitness to improve 

the health and safety of the

groups and culminates 

with the Robbie Bermingham 

Speaking Competition 

in which students in 

fifth through eighth grade 

research, write, revise 

and present a five-minute 

speech on a topic of their 

choice. During the course 

of their time at LFCDS, 

students develop their ability 

to express themselves, 

take risks in a nurturing 

environment and cultivate 

the self-confidence to present 

to large audiences.

The power of creative exploration 

Innovative new learning space 

at Bernard Weinger JCC Early 

Childhood Center 

At JCC Chicago, they believe that children 

are strong, capable and resilient with 

a natural curiosity that invites them to explore 

the world them. They recognize that 

children learn in many ways — through 

artwork, dance, music, language and the 

written word. In all of their classrooms, 

their staff and educators support creative 

thinking by providing open-ended materials 

that inspire children to ask questions, 

investigate the world and share their 

knowledge. 

At Bernard Weinger JCC Early Childhood 

Center in Northbrook, educators 

created a space to further nurture this selfguided 

approach to learning. The Atelier 

is a classroom space where children collaborate 

with their peers to explore, create, 

inquire, think and grow cognitively 

and social emotionally. 

Within the Atelier, the teacher facilitates 

learning by asking open-ended 

questions and by setting the stage with 

provocations – materials such as clay, 

wire, paint, pens, paper, beads, shells and 

other natural materials that invite children 

to express themselves. Children work in 

small clusters to transform what they have 

learned in the classroom into creative displays 

of pictures, words and stories. 

Recently, children spent time in their 

classroom learning about shapes. They 

talked about the shapes they see every 

day in every space, and focused on circles 

and dots. In the Atelier, children built on 

what they had learned and what they already 

knew. They problem solved to design 

structures and build on their intuitive 

knowledge of geometry, naturally extending 

their exploration of shapes. 

The Atelier at Bernard Weinger JCC is 

part of what makes their early childhood 

experience unique to any other. This designated 

space allows children to express 

their knowledge using a range of formats 

and materials, connect with their peers, 

and build trusted relationships with nurturing 

educators.

Choice Awards ceremony

Winners of 22nd Century Media’s second 

annual North Shore Choice Awards were invited 

to attend a cocktail party and awards ceremony 

Wednesday, March 21, at the Winnetka 

Community House in Winnetka. 

The honorees feasted on a variety of hors 

d’oeuvres provided by Catered by Design including 

coconut shrimp, raspberry baked Brie, 

crudite shooters, barbecue pulled chicken, 

herb-encrusted sirloin of beef crostini, crisp 

baked potato cup and Mediterranean spreads 

of hummus, roasted red pepper garlic spread 

and tomato bruschetta. 

Entertainment was provided by The Actors 

Photos by Jill Duncan/22nd Century Media 

Gymnasium and included a living red carpet, 

juggling globe walker and stilt walker. 

The award winners received a North Shore 

Choice Awards plaque with their business 

name engraved on it and a photo from the ceremony 

of each business owner or representative.
