Then She Was Gone, Lisa Jewell
After finishing this book, I was left with mixed
emotions. It has some dark elements and reaches
a sad yet satisfying ending which although was not
particularly uplifting, did provide a good conclusion.
I got a sense of how the story was going to unfold from
an early stage but this didn’t deter me from wanting
to read on. I really enjoy thrillers and stories about
families - family members, their interactions with each
other and with other people. This certainly had all this
and more. At the centre of it all is the disappearance
of Ellie Mack - what has happened to her, where
has she gone, and will the truth be uncovered? I’ll
obviously say no more about that so that you discover
this for yourself!
I found it easy to read in a way which allowed me to
lose all concept of time (I even stayed up until 1am
reading one night which, when you have a two-yearold
who likes to wake up early, is something of a
triumph!) I like books that stay with me for a while
after I’ve read them and I think that this will be one
of them. I am a fan of Lisa Jewell and this latest book
doesn’t disappoint. If you haven’t read it already, be
sure to add it to your reading list.
Close to Home, Cara Hunter
This book has been described as ‘the impossible to put
down’ novel, and for me this was certainly the case!
Set in Oxford, the novel follows an investigation led by
DI Adam Fawley. The story starts when an eight-yearold
girl goes missing. As with all good books, all is not
what it seems and there are some good twists and turns
along the way.
It includes all the things I like in a novel - it was fastpaced
and gripping. It focuses on the story from different
character perspectives throughout and also includes
sections from social media accounts and news articles, all
of which add another dimension to the writing.
As part of the police enquiries, different characters are
introduced and their lives are explored. I felt that the
characters were all looked at in a way you’d expect them
to be in a police investigation - you get to see a snapshot
of their lives and delve into elements of their past. I
liked what we saw of Adam Fawley and look forward to
revisiting his story - and I’m sure a new investigation - in
Cara Hunter’s next book which is due out in July.
If there’s one thing I wasn’t as keen on it would be the
ending, which I felt was a bit rushed. However, this
doesn’t detract much from the overall enjoyment of the
book and I would definitely recommend it. I can’t wait
for the next book in the series.
