attention to design, detail and craftsmanship, keeping alive a long heritage

A selection of our practical and artistic ironwork is displayed in our showroom 

in Herefordshire, and we welcome visitors to view the collection. We also 

offer tours of the workshop, so you can see first-hand the care and detail we 

apply to all our bespoke hand-crafted ironwork. We also invite you to join us 

for a cup of tea in our home where we hope the beauty of the ironwork will 

inspire you to be creative and innovative with your own space.

ABOUT US 

Established for some 13 years, Oldfield Forge Ltd. is a traditional familyrun 

blacksmithing business set in the very heart of rural Herefordshire. It 

was founded by the two of us, husband and wife team, Aaron and Nicky 

Heath. Aaron is the head blacksmith whilst Nicky is the business manager. 

Between us and our small band of talented blacksmiths we like to think 

that we have built a strong and highly respected organisation with a 

reputation for producing ironwork of the very highest quality and featuring 

outstanding design and craftsmanship. 

Possessed of a natural aptitude for this type of work Aaron has dedicated 

his adult life to the art of the traditional blacksmith, continually pushing 

and establishing new boundaries in metalwork. However as well as 

creating the more contemporary pieces he also has a deep interest in the 

conservation of heritage ironwork and his knowledge and experience in 

this field has enabled him to work alongside some of the country’s leading 

architects, designers, specialist contractors and conservation experts on 

projects for organisations such as National Trust, English Heritage and 

Cadw. These have involved many historic, ecclesiastic and other similarly 

prestigious properties.

Nicky is the business organiser and developer. She has responsibility for 

sales, purchasing, marketing and setting the weekly staff work schedules 

as well as dealing with the multitude of other vital day to day duties that 

are essential to the running of a successful company. She has a real flair 

for interior design and takes a leading role in creating and developing new 

product ranges. Nicky was also the driving force behind the setting up of 

Oldfield Forge Academy which, along with the Forge itself, has gone from 

strength to strength under her guidance and supervision. 

Both of us are devoted to working alongside our team and our customers 

to ensure that Oldfield Forge Ltd. continues to provide only the very 

highest standards of service, design and, of course, end product. 

We are here to transform your ideas and your dreams into reality. Please

We pay precise attention to detail and all of our bespoke ironwork can be made suitable 

for all situations and dimensions. Our handmade bolts have been carefully designed 

allowing, for instance, swan neck bolts to be held in the up or down position with a 

positive fix. Unlike imported bolts, which rely on a spring mechanism, and as such 

cannot provide total security, our bolts offer the peace of mind of a secure fixture.

DOOR HANDLES 

We also now offer sprung door handles. The mechanism works by returning the lever 

back to its natural horizontal position after depression. In contrast, an un-sprung door 

handle operates on the reliance of the door lock spring to return to its natural position.

receiver. Upon ordering please specify which you require. We also produce espagnolette

This piece was commissioned for a 

beautiful home in the Cotswolds. 

We worked with the customer from 

design through to installation, and 

this inspirational pattern was echoed 

throughout the rest of the interior 

of the house. A mix of intricate 

ironwork and stunning natural wood 

banisters created a completely 

unique statement staircase, which 

beautifully enriched the existing 

interior. The delicate pattern forged 

in iron provides a stunning contrast 

to the light and airy house, bringing 

a sense of solidity and artistry to our 

customer’s home.

CHELSEA SHOW GATES 

We are very proud to have had the honour and privilege of working with Oak Leaf Gates 

to help celebrate the iconic RHS Chelsea Flower Show reaching its 100th anniversary. 

We produced these beautiful statement gates in honour of the show, with an intricate 

vine pattern hand-forged in iron. The delicate nature-themed ironwork perfectly 

compliments the stunning surroundings, and certainly invokes the tradition and beauty 

of the famous RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

RESTORATION & HERITAGE 

The craftsmanship involved in traditional period ironwork is a great passion for us here 

at Oldfield Forge and we work alongside many historic and conservation organisations 

in order to help restore heritage pieces. We specialise in all aspects of restoration 

and conservation of traditional and historic ironwork. We have developed a formal 

relationship system to ensure that our work within the forge is carried out to the highest 

ethical standards of the blacksmithing profession. Head blacksmith, Aaron Heath, and 

our small team of experienced blacksmiths are extremely conscious of the considerable 

responsibility placed upon them when restoring and preserving important heritage 

ironwork. We work on the basis that the best conservation practice is to retain as much 

of the original material as possible and that, if viable, any necessary interventions should 

be reversible. 

We view the conservation and restoration of historic ironwork as an essential 

contribution to the protection of our British heritage. Our aim (where appropriate) is to 

return the item to its original condition using minimal intervention in order to restore 

the history and heritage of the ironwork. We provide a comprehensive assessment as 

to the condition of the piece and recommend the best practice for its conservation and 

restoration. We can recreate missing elements of the original whilst in other cases we 

use our skills and experience in ironwork reproduction to craft a new piece sympathetic 

to the style of the building of which it is a part. 


Our aim is to:- 

• Retain as much of the existing material as possible using innovative methodologies 

• Where possible to repair sympathetically - rather than renewing 

• Use where possible traditional techniques and materials 

• Compile images of the artefact before, during and after conservation work through 

the medium of drawings and photographs in order to provide a documented longterm 

record of the stages of the restoration project. 

• Ensure our restoration practice is to the highest quality and, where practical, consistent 

with the original techniques employed. 

• Provide a consultancy which will help you decide upon the best and most sympathetic 

approach to every project, including best practice methods and the processes of 

dismantling and re-installation.

“An architectural masterpiece of the 13th to 16th centuries, Westminster Abbey also 

presents a unique pageant of British history – the shrine of St Edward the Confessor, 

the tombs of kings and queens, and countless memorials to the famous and the great. 

It has been the setting for every Coronation since 1066 and for numerous other royal 

occasions, including sixteen royal weddings.” 

We have recently carried out an intensive conservation programme on the Westminster 

Abbey Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Galleries. Our work included the forging of new but 

traditionally-styled door furniture consistent with the heritage of this very special 

historic building.

FINISHES 

Ku-Rust 

This finish enhances the darkness of the steel and 

displays the beauty and quality of the hand-crafted 

ironwork to full effect. It gives a more natural look 

and feel than painting. This is a beautiful finish for 

interior pieces. However we do not recommend this 

finish for exterior use. 

Linseed Oil 

A traditional finish dating back to the 18th century, 

linseed is used to preserve ironwork and is proven 

to be slightly more durable than traditional beeswax. 

We would only recommend this finish for interior 

use as regular maintenance would be required for 

external pieces. This finish has similar characteristics 

to a beeswax finish but with a more lustrous and 

clear appearance. 

Beeswax 

To create this finish the completed ironwork is 

heated in the fire and individually dipped into a hot 

liquid beeswax mixture. This is a traditional finish, 

recommended mainly for interior use, as exterior 

use requires the regular reapplication of wax. The 

finish is aesthetically pleasing to the eye, allowing 

the ironwork to showcase its natural appearance. 

Antique Aged 

This finish offers a rustic aesthetic effect and can 

help bring a stylish industrial feel to any piece. A 

rust finish is suitable for both interior and exterior 

use and is sealed with linseed oil or renaissance wax 

to retain the effect and prevent further rusting. 


Galvanised & Acid Etched 

We recommend that all exterior ironwork be galvanised 

as this protects the items from weathering and is virtually 

maintenance- free. Galvanising provides a high-lustre 

appearance. We also offer the option for the product to be 

acid - etched. This additional etching gives the ironwork a 

more natural, less lustrous look. 

Painted 

This popular and durable finish is suitable for both interior 

and exterior use. We offer a range of paint choices and can 

help you choose the one that is right for you. Please contact 

us for more information. 

Grate Polish 

Suitable as a heat-proof natural finish and mainly used for 

fireside accessories. A grate polish will provide your ironwork 

pieces with a slight sheen and will ensure their protection 

throughout usage. 

Wire Brushed & Lacquered 

This option is brushed to a gunmetal style finish before being 

sealed with matt lacquer. This finish is suitable for interior use 

only. 

Pewter 

This metallic paint is a high quality, solvent-borne, metalpigmented 

paint. It has enjoyed a reputation as the finest 

metal paint available since its establishment in 1972. The fastdrying 

formulation enables the system to be applied quickly 

with minimum disruption and provides an excellent alternative 

to traditional methods. It also has a unique and classical gilt 

finish, with a range of metallic colours available. It is suitable for 

both indoor and outdoor use. If you are unsure as to whether 

this finish is suitable for your product please do contact us for

Oldfield Forge Academy was born in 2013 when we decided that we would like 

to pass on our skills and show you how it feels to be a traditional blacksmith. 

Originally offering courses to school children, we soon began to realise that it 

wasn’t just the kids who wanted to have a go! 

What we offer 

We offer a series of fun packages designed for families, friends and couples as 

well as stag / hen parties, corporate team-building and vocational courses. 

With all our packages we also offer our picnic facilities and the use of our 

Scandinavian Lodge and Shepherd’s Hut, both sited in the Oldfield Forge wood 

so that you can really enjoy the pleasure of being in our beautiful Herefordshire 

countryside. 

All our packages are available as a voucher which you can purchase for that 

special occasion. Please visit our website for further information - remember to 

keep an eye out for new packages being released! 

At Oldfield Forge we believe in working with other local businesses in order to 

offer you even more for your day out at the Academy. If you would like to extend 

your visit and enjoy another activity we can help you arrange extra treats such 

as tours at our local beer, cider and wine producers. Alternatively, you might like 

to start or finish your day by paddling your own canoe, or try your hand at other 

outdoor pursuits. We can also help you source or arrange local accommodation. 


Couple’s Day Date 

Why not treat yourselves to a day off and come to the Academy 

for the ultimate date? We will teach you how to make a piece 

of bespoke ironwork. You can either work together to make 

something for the home, or compete to see which one is the 

best blacksmith. We have found the ladies to be as good as the 

gents! This package is also ideal for a stress-free first date. The 

day is promised to bring lots of laughter and fun, also making the 

perfect way to mark and celebrate your anniversary! 

Just for Fun 

Take a break from the hustle and bustle of your busy life with a day 

of forging at the Academy. Our ‘Just For Fun’ package is one to 

be ticked off your bucket list! You can enjoy three or five hours 

of blacksmithing with a fully trained and experienced member 

of our team. Take away a beautifully crafted piece of ironwork, 

created by your own hands. After your time in the forge, why 

not unwind even further in our wooded grounds and enjoy our 

homemade picnic lunches. Alternatively, head down to the local 

pub for a drink and lunch or an evening meal. 

Forging & Tasting 

You can join us for three hours of forging, followed by a tour of 

Hillside Brewery, Westons Cider or White Castle Vineyards. 

During your time with us we will help you make a bottle opener 

or cork screw to aid you in your tour experience. Three hours of 

forging following by a tour at your choice of venue. During your 

time with us you can also enjoy one of our picnic lunches. Set in 

our beautiful wooded grounds we also have a Shepherd’s Hut and 

a Scandinavian Lodge with a wood burning stove!

The most important part of any wedding is when the 

couple make their vows, sealed by the exchange of rings. 

Think how much more significant that moment would 

be if you exchanged rings that you actually made 

yourselves. Come to the Academy for a day and our 

expert blacksmiths will help you create the rings that 

will make your wedding so special. During your time 

with us you can celebrate the occasion with the added 

option of a picnic lunch in our Scandinavian Lodge or 

our Shepherd’s Hut. We also offer the option of plating 

your rings in Chrome, Silver or Gold. 

Stag & Hen Parties 

If you’re looking to do something different for your stag or hen 

party, a day at the Academy is ideal. We tailor the event 

to suit each party’s requirements, ensuring we cater for 

all tastes! The day is full of laughter and fun from the 

minute you enter the forge. You could each make a 

keepsake as a lasting memento of your friendship 

and the forthcoming wedding or join together as 

a team to make a decorative sword. If you want to 

make a weekend of it we can help you find suitable

experience of learning to use a forge and either create 

individual items or work together on one bespoke piece. 

The day is also suitable for children (8 years and above). 

If they are not tired out after their forging experience, the 

children can enjoy our play area with a tyre swing, zip wire, 

picnic benches and wild flowers – the sheepdogs might 

come out to play too! Let us know what occasion you wish to 

celebrate and we’ll make that day special for you.

ORDER / AVAILABILITY 

Ordering couldn’t be easier. You can place an order by post, telephone, 

email or in person at our showroom situated in the beautiful 

countryside of Garway Hill in Herefordshire. All our products are 

bespoke and consequently delivery times can vary considerably. If 

your items are from our standard collection and are in stock then they 

will be delivered within 14 working days. However, if your products are 

being made to order, then due to the nature of our work, please allow 

up to six weeks for delivery. Rest assured that we will work to the best 

of our ability to meet your specific deadline. 

DELIVERY 

We offer a delivery service direct to your door. Alternatively, customers 

are more than welcome to collect their ironwork in person and take 

the opportunity to browse our showroom. 

OPENING TIMES 

Our friendly and knowledgeable staff are available to speak to you 

from 8am–5pm Monday to Friday and are available by appointment 

on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays. 

VOUCHERS 

For birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, or indeed any special occasion, 

an Oldfield Forge Ltd voucher can be a truly unique gift. Vouchers 

are also available for our blacksmithing courses so that you can gift a
