28—SATURDAY Vanguard, APRIL 7, 2018 08116759759 Thousands of people have flocked to Japan to celebrate the phallus No, this isn’t an April Fools’ joke – there is actually a penis festival that took place in Japan last sunday. Yep, you read that right – a festival dedicated to penises is currently taking place in Kawasaki right now. Incredible. Tens of thousands flock to Shinto Kanamara Matsuri each year as giant phalluses – some as big as fully grown men – parade through the streets in tribute to the penis. Also known as the Festival of the Steel Phallus – or Willy Festival – the annual celebration is held on the first Sunday of April at the Kanayama Shrine. Penis-shaped floats are held aloft during the sreet parades while both the young and old enjoy phallusthemed candy, chocolate and lollipops and pose with penisshaped sculptures. Visitors also don penis beaks, carry giant penis purses and some even straddle a giant wooden phallus. The festival celebrates fertility and also raises awareness about safe sex practices and funds for HIV charities. It focuses around a penis-shaped shrine that prostitutes used to pray under to ask for protection against sexually transmitted diseases. A huge iron dildo that sits in the Kanayama shrine is also a big part of the festival. Legend has it that in the Edo Period (1603-1868) a sharptoothed demon who live inside a woman’s vagina castrated several men on their wedding nights. But a quick-thinking local blacksmith came to the rescue and forged a massive iron dildo to break the demon’s teeth. And in honour of the Shinto deities of fertiliy, childbirth and protection, a three-foot steel phallus now sits in the shrine’s courtyard. Sex workers used to go the shrine to pray they would be protected from sexually transmitted diseases. Religious guru whose penis was hacked off by woman 'he tried to rape' says HE forgives HER A religious guru who likened himself to Jesus Christ had his penis hacked off with a knife by a woman he was 'trying to rape' - and he's back having sex again just eight months later. Swamy Gangeshananda's equipment has returned to ship-shape and he was so chuffed that he held a press conference to announce it to the world. The Indian guru was allegedly bobbitized - that's the 'urban' term for a penis being chopped off - by a woman he had tried to rape in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of southern India state Kerala. He was accused of abusing the 23-year-old woman for years in Kerala before she allegedly sliced off his genitals with a knife she had hidden under her pillow. At a conference on Wednesday, Mr Gangeshananda said he has recovered completely. "I have become a normal person after more than eight months’ life as a third gender person," he said. He told the conference his severed penis was stitched up at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital, and two surgeries were then performed. Dr R Vijayan, head of urology department and senior consultant laparoscopic surgeon at the Specialists Hospital, where one of the surgeries was conducted, said Gangeshananda could urinate freely and that he can have normal sexual functions, reports Times of India. Mr Gangeshananda refused to comment on how his penis came to be hacked off, save to say he "forgives" the person or 'big gang' of people involved. He continued: "I helped some people and they were behind the incident. My fate is similar to that of Jesus Christ, who was deceived by people close to him. "If I am guilty let it be proven before the court and God. I am ready to accept punishment if I am found guilty. I do not have complaints against anyone and have forgiven those who attacked me." He said he admitted to "the crime" while being questioned in hospital, saying he was in "great pain" and wanted treatment to begin quickly. Dr Vijayan said when Mr Gangeshananda came to the Specialists Hospital on December 27 last year - 140 days after the incident - his penis was severely infected, following three surgeries. "The penis had a 4cm-wide cut," said the doctor, explaining how some arteries were damaged. "We sutured the organ back to its position. As the arteries in the fleshy part of the penis were cut off, blood circulation had been stopped to that part. "However, the arteries in the skin, which were supposed to supply blood to the skin alone, slowly started to supply blood to the organ as well." Shopping centre offers 'girlfriends for rent' costing 33p an hour - but there's one very strict condition Ashopping centre has put 15 women up for rent by the minute i n a what it claims is the next biggest shopping trend. The young models can be borrowed for just 11p for 20 minutes and can be returned if the customer is not entirely satisfied. The women were stood on podiums in the entrance of the Vitality City shopping complex in Heyuan City in southern China for the limited-time event, which is expected to return because it was so popular. Crowds of shoppers were offered the chance to choose a 'girlfriend' of their choice for just 1 RMB - equivalent to 11p - for 20 minutes, with willing takers only needing to scan a QR code on their phones to pay the fee. Those not wishing to renew the rental after 20 minutes, would mean the models would simply return to the podium to await the next offer. The shopping centre, which claims the event "blew up the whole city", said the women could keep shoppers company and could even hold their bags if they pleased. Lonely men looking for temporary partners could also take them out to lunch or on dinner dates - but no touching allowed was their one strict policy. The event comes off the back of a similarly successful one held by the Friendship Commercial Plaza in Haikou, which offered six smartly dressed boyfriends for rent at just 11p an hour. Vitality City, however, went a step further by increasing its shareable girlfriends to 15.
