<strong>Black</strong> Owned<br />

Ride-Shar<strong>in</strong>g<br />

App<br />

With the immense success<br />

<strong>of</strong> companies like Uber and Lyft,<br />

r i d e - s h a r i n g t e c h n o l -<br />

ogy has boomed <strong>in</strong>to a multibillion<br />

dollar <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />

with<strong>in</strong> the past decade.<br />

Now a new platform<br />

is look<strong>in</strong>g to stake<br />

its claim <strong>in</strong> the marketplace.<br />

Moovn is a ridehail<strong>in</strong>g<br />

mobile application<br />

founded by<br />

Godw<strong>in</strong> Gabriel. The<br />

app currently operates<br />

<strong>in</strong> 7 U.S. cities<br />

(Wash<strong>in</strong>gton, DC, <strong>Chicago</strong>,<br />

IL, Boston, MA,<br />

Portland, OR, Seattle,<br />

WA, San Francisco,<br />

CA, New York, NY)<br />

and 1 city <strong>in</strong> Africa<br />

(Dar-Es-Salaam, TZ), with plans<br />

to rapidly expand <strong>in</strong> both Western<br />

and emerg<strong>in</strong>g markets.<br />

In a recent <strong>in</strong>terview with UrbanGeekz,<br />

Gabriel expla<strong>in</strong>s how<br />

he taught himself how to code, <strong>in</strong><br />

Derrick A. Riley, CEO<br />

order to launch the beta version <strong>of</strong><br />

his app. Say<strong>in</strong>g his beta launch<br />

was “amateurish at best,” he goes<br />

on to expla<strong>in</strong> how the platform<br />

transformed <strong>in</strong>to what it is today:<br />

“It wasn’t until we received<br />

<strong>in</strong>vestor back<strong>in</strong>g that I was able to<br />

hire and collaborate with a team<br />

<strong>of</strong> seasoned developers to transform<br />

the platform <strong>in</strong>to what we<br />

have today.”<br />

When asked what his biggest<br />

challenges are, he says,<br />

“The market, for the<br />

most part, is currently<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g dom<strong>in</strong>ated by<br />

Uber and Lyft with<br />

these companies enjoy<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the benefits <strong>of</strong><br />

hav<strong>in</strong>g first mover<br />

advantage with the<br />

transportation technology<br />

space. However,<br />

we’re confident that<br />

the global market rema<strong>in</strong>s<br />

sizable enough<br />

for all <strong>of</strong> us to fit <strong>in</strong><br />

and play.”<br />

Consider<strong>in</strong>g the rise <strong>of</strong><br />

smartphone usage<br />

across the cont<strong>in</strong>ent <strong>of</strong> Africa,<br />

operat<strong>in</strong>g there seems to be a good<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess strategy. It’s also a market<br />

that hasn’t been explored by<br />

the big brands <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />
