“I’m going over

“I’m going over there right now!” yelled John. April who was now hiding behind the bars on the staircase flinched at the loud booming voice from her thin, usually joyful father. April continued watching as her father stormed through the front door and over to number seven; Daisy, now wiping her eyes walked over to the front window to watch for John’s return. April, still only young, was trying to make sense of what was happening. As April was about to sneak back upstairs into her bedroom the door opened. John re-entered the front room of the old house. He appeared to be cupping his hands, and seemed to be hiding it from Daisy although April could see blood on her father’s right hand. Taking another look at her mother whom now had closed the curtains and locked the door. April returned to her bedroom, she felt safe again, the banging had stopped. She could hear the soft muffled voices of her parent’s

downstairs. April fell asleep soon after. Daisy, was a kind quiet lady and did not like trouble. April heard her mother every day before her father went to work: “Be careful dear,” April knew this was being said to stop her father retaliating and going next door if the events of the previous night were to resurface. She also knew that she wasn’t supposed to know about those events and made sure to keep quiet. A few weeks on and the noises that April heard became more frequent. April heard the sounds through her bedroom wall and the shouts of Bill’s four children- whom April had met only once as they went to a different school and was rarely aloud to leave the house. One-night April had caught her father talking in a raised voice to her mother. She could tell that he was on the edge of visiting Bill again. Then suddenly! The door flew open. It was Betty, Bills wife, and her children crying. 4
