It could be presumed

It could be presumed that Betty knew that John would protect her as she had been saved by him a few weeks before. Sneaking, once again, April repositioned herself at the bottom of the stairs. Betty, still crying told John about Bill returning home once again- drunk. “Don’t worry Betty, I’ll take the children upstairs and we can talk,” Daisy uttered, slightly uncomfortable as she would have preferred to stay out of her neighbour’s business. The four children clung to their mother which gave April enough time to scurry back to her bedroom. She thought she heard the door bang. Quickly moving towards her window, she peered out. It was her father. He had left and entered the next house. Judging by the sounds coming through the walls he would be returning with bloody hands. Both Bill and John walked onto the street and her father was preparing to shout. “She is staying with us!” He bellowed as he punched Bill on the side of his face.

6 “Go away and don’t come back or you’ll get what you deserve.” John kicked over a small oak table with a bottle of alcohol on top (which Bill always kept outside by the front door) and continued home… For the last time that night April heard her father speak to her mother. “They must stay with us for a short time till it settles down.” In an instant April woke up remembering the previous night and could hear the four children talking to their mother. April supposed her mother had allowed them to stay for a while because she felt sorry for Betty and her children. Sometime later Bill disappeared never to be seen again by April and her family. All this stopped the holiday that the family was looking forward to. April had never been to the seaside and had only ever seen the beach on a postcard they had received from her auntie.
