As soon as he was old enough William went to train as an electrical engineer at the pit. He found it hard to make friends as he felt he couldn’t trust anyone which resulted in him often being perceived as being blunt and defensive. Some men helped him best they could at work and helped him to become more confident in himself and his actions at work and in his free time. A few months went by and William, although very nervous, asked April for a date on her own. She blushed and agreed to meet him the next night. They went to the pictures to watch a romantic film. They enjoyed each other’s company and William walked her home. When they arrived home her dad was outside waiting at the gate, he said: “Hello William”, April was surprised. “Hello sir,” William replied. April’s dad explained that he works with William and that he had helped him grow from a young, shy boy. He told April that he was doing well at his job and that he is a nice young man. He also asked April if she would bring him for tea on Sunday. William and April happily courted for quite some time; he was 6 years older than April, but this didn’t bother her as they enjoyed being together and that her father approved of him.
54 William was so happy with April and liked John too, he regularly called many times for tea and he was welcomed as an extension of the family. William decided to get April a silver cross and chain for her 17th birthday. John has asked him to come for tea, so William thought this was a good opportunity to ask April to marry him. So, the night before he visited and asked John for her hand in Marriage, John agreed.
