Match Day Programme for Sittingbourne v Molesey 7th April 2018
The Secretary’s Jottings Good afternoon everyone. Welcome to Woodstock. Our visitors are Molesey. Welcome to their players, officials and supporters. A welcome also to today’s match officials. Molesey will be out to avenge our narrow 3-2 win back in November. The report of this game is in this programme. Our last home game should have been last Saturday when our visitors were to be Thamesmead Town. We were quite confident that the pitch would be fine despite the rain earlier in the week. But early morning heavy rain made some parts of the pitch very soft underfoot and possibly dangerous. We had great difficulty in getting a referee in to do a pitch inspection. When he did arrive he also felt that the ground was too soft in places and called the match off. This was a big financial blow to us as it was the last chance we had of making any money over a holiday period after we also lost our holiday home match over Christmas. It’s a good job it is coming to the end of the season as some of the photos I have seen of pitches where matches did take place last Saturday looked like the pitches would never recover without major work on them. Although I am not a big fan of artificial pitches I would reluctantly concede that if we continue to play matches in the months we do then they are the answer to preventing match congestion. Also, Aveley and Whyteleafe must have made a tidy sum from renting their grounds out to the clubs they have done over the past week. As it turned out, our last home match was against Greenwich Borough. This was an excellent performance but not quite enough to prevent a 2-1 defeat. Still, there was much to like, not least that we competed with one of the best teams in the league for the whole 90 minutes. Only one game for us then over the Easter period when a decent crowd of 206 saw us come back from being one goal down at Ramsgate to force a draw. Probably a fair result. Ramsgate had the best of the first half and we had the advantage in the second half. Remember we have two quizzes coming up at Woodstock Park to raise funds for the club. On Friday 13 th April we have a music quiz hosted by BRFM’s Peter Finch. If you came to our last one you will know how entertaining this was. Our second quiz is on Friday 27 th April when (by popular demand) we have a general knowledge quiz hosted by Jimbo who runs highly successful quizzes at Woodstock every other Monday. These evenings organised for the supporters are vital to us as we get nowhere enough support through the turnstiles to finance everything that is required to run a club of our status and size. Looking further into the summer. Woodstock will have a “cinema under the stars” event when the film, Disney’s “The Lion King” will be shown. Put the 6 th June in your diary for this, a first at Woodstock. Next up for us are two away games, Next Wednesday we travel to Hythe and next Saturday we travel to Phoenix Sports. Our next home match is Tuesday 17 th which is our rearranged match against Thamesmead Town. Enjoy the game!
