OPTIMAL LIVING SPRING ISSUE Did you know that diabetes mellitus comes in part from the Latin word for “honey sweet”? As a matter of fact, diabetes was diagnosed from tasting the urine. If it was as “sweet as honey”, the test was considered positive. More than 20 million Americans are currently diagnosed with diabetes and sadly some go undiagnosed. That means that there are a lot of people who will subsequently are at risk for kidney failure, autonomic neuropathy (affects signs of such conditions as hypoglycemia and heart attack, and can cause erectile dysfunction or ED), peripheral neuropathy (causes such symptoms as pain, numbness and tingling in legs and feet), and vision loss from re t i n o p a t hy. High blood sugars, if left untreated through medications or diet can even lead to poorly healed wounds and damaged blood vessels and nerves which can eventually lead to amputations. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that more than 29 million Americans are living with diagnosed or undiagnosed diabetes. Do not be of the undiagnosed, and if you are diagnosed please consider some of the provided healthier alternatives to reduce or halt your risk for the above complications. HEALTHIER SUGAR ALTERNATIVES Use less of all sugars, including white, brown, honey, jelly and syrups. Select nature's candy, fruit to satisfy your urge to consume sweets. Alternatives to sweet desserts include whole-grain crackers and fresh fruit with unsweetened yogurt. Sweet spices are a better alternative that table sugar or syrups. Consider using cinnamon or ginger. Experiment with extracts like vanilla, maple, coconut, banana and chocolate. Adding dried fruit to baked goods will add extra sweetness and nutrients at the same time. Avoid cereals with added sugars. Check o u t t h e nutrition l a b e l . I f s u g a r content is listed as the first or second ingredient chances are it is loaded with added sugar. Rather than using table sugar as a topping, add raisins or banana slices. As you can see, our food choices as it relates to sugar plays a key role in our health and nutrition. We should remember that the content of the desserts we select is very important. Nutrient dense fruits are better used by the body's cells than desserts that use table sugar. Remember that no more than 100 calories of added sugar should come from our diet. Take in consideration the provided information and use it as a guide to reduce your intake of sugar. Give your body [and its cells] the type of nutrients it needs to cut down your risk for lifestyle diseases such as type 2 diabetes. It starts with you and what you choose to feed your body. 14

OPTIMAL LIVING SPRING ISSUE A TIME OF INTECESSION Father God in the name Jesus, we come to you thanking you for this day. We lift Your name on high and come humbly before Your throne of grace with thanksgiving in our hearts. We have no idea what this year will bring, but we rest in the fact that you are with us. We ask that you bless, protect, and pour Your favor upon our families, children, spouses, and friends. Father, we pray for divine intervention in all areas of our lives. Where there is sickness, we pray for wellness; where there is brokenness, we pray for wholeness; where there is grief, we pray for Your comfort; where there is loss, we pray for restoration. We pray that Your loving kindness will be felt throughout this land. We pray that lost souls would be restored to You from the east, west, north, and south. Father, we trust You with everything concerning us and thank You that as we speak Your Word, it will not return void. We thank You that wherever we go and whatever we do, Your favor goes with us. Help us to keep in the forefront of our minds that it is what we do for You that truly matters every day of our lives. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous person avails much. Therefore, we believe we receive what we pray for right now. In Jesus' Name, Amen! 15
