Monocotyledons (Monocots)
1. Poaceae (grass family). In terms of numbers, the grass family is the largest of
flowering plants. It is also the most widely distributed. This family includes all of
the cereals (e.g., wheat, barley, oats, rice, and corn). In horticulture, most grasses
are ornamental and especially noted for their role as lawn material in the
landscape. Important grasses include the fescues (Festuca spp.) and bluegrass
(Poa spp.). A popular grass used as a vegetable is sweet corn (Zea mays).
