LEGISLATIVE<br />

Both state <strong>and</strong> federal directives have been emplaced over the last ten years that both<br />

identify <strong>and</strong> make provisions for the management of noxious <strong>and</strong> invasive weeds <strong>and</strong><br />

also regulating agricultural chemicals both acceptable <strong>and</strong> unacceptable.<br />

CULTURAL<br />

Crop rotations, varying planting dates, crop spacing, traps, cover <strong>and</strong> buffer crops are a<br />

few of the cultural methods employed to reduce the impact of weeds on crops (Figure 2,<br />

<strong>and</strong> 3).<br />

BIOLOGICAL<br />

Research is ongoing at several locations to identify <strong>and</strong> evaluate the effectiveness of<br />

both insects <strong>and</strong> pathogens that may be used in weed suppression. Crop breeding is also<br />

used to create new varieties with enhanced competitiveness to weeds.<br />
