TRENDSETTERS Interior

TRENDSETTERS Interior Indulgence EXTRAORDINARY TEXTURES, ULTRA- BRIGHT SHEENS AND COSY SOFT CORNERS – HOME DESIGN THIS YEAR IS SHAPING UP TO BE BOTH SNUG AND CAPTIVATING, SAYS NICOLE SWENGLEY 58 NetJets

Carl Hansen Combining Bauhaus, functionalism and industrial aesthetics, Arne Jacobsen’s Society Table design has been given a modern twist by his fellow Danes at Carl Hansen. carlhansen.com © CARL HANSEN & SON More than ever our homes are sanctuaries from global uncertainties, so it makes sense that comfort and glamour have risen to the top of the agenda for furniture makers and interior designers. We’re no longer cocooning, as we were a decade ago, but revelling in the possibilities of our private interiors. Upholstery and fabrics were sensual and tactile at two key design shows earlier this year, IMM Cologne and Maison&Objet in Paris. Velvet was a hot favourite, as revealed in Space Copenhagen’s chic, semi-circular Loafer chair for &tradition. Tom Dixon’s Super- Texture cushions make a virtue of hand-tufting while rare South African angora-goat hair in subtle colours gives his Soft range its sensory appeal. Sensory immersion is equally strong in the shimmering hand-knotted 100% fine Chinese silk of Walter Knoll’s Legends of Carpets collection as well as in the nomadic-inspired floor cushions called Badawi Pillows. The Rug Company launched eyecatching new cityscape-inspired designs created by the award-winning German designer Sebastian Herkner, which are hand-knotted in silk and Tibetan wool with varying pile heights to suggest a 3D effect. Soft curves characterise the latest generously proportioned seating. The Bundle sofa, designed by EOOS for Walter Knoll, looks like a large, folded blanket floating on a minimal base, while the gentle folds of Ligne Roset’s chrysalis-like Paipaï sofa, designed by LucidiPevere, are inspired by Japanese origami. Jasper Morrison’s soft Modular Sofa for Vitra is a tranquil haven in powdery-pink and lives up to its name with a modular flexibility that is shared by Nendo’s curvaceous Okome sofa, for Alias, which also has a clever cushion-to-back hooking system. More poetic still is a new, extended version of Borghese Sofa, designed by Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance for La Chance, with a branchy, rear structure inspired by trees surrounding Villa Borghese in Rome. Outdoor furniture is channelling retro nostalgia into an upbeat, contemporary vibe. High-back, rattan armchairs and sofas in B&B Italia’s Bay collection, designed by Doshi Levien, recall ornate, 1960s peacock chairs, and Paola Navone’s InOut 629 daybed for Gervasoni turns classic, handwoven rattan into an enveloping, organic nest. Swiss manufacturer de Sede references its own archival designs with the boldly architectural DS- 1000 chaise longue in which head-to-foot leather straps are supported by golden tubing. Accessories are also playfully elegant. Highlights included the Hepburn collection’s stemware, pitcher and cocktail shaker, all designed by Brad Ascalon for Nude, and the Muster cup and Neo Gothic Cup designed by Maxim Velcovsky for glass specialist Lasvit. There is a remarkable degree of whimsy and wonder in so many of the new pieces – perfect home comforts indeed. > 59 NetJets
