Welcome to the Spring

Welcome to the Spring 2018 edition of Woburn Golf News Jason O’Malley, Managing Director Welcome to the Spring edition of the Club newsletter. All we need now is for Spring to finally arrive! Whilst the winter has been a challenging one in terms of weather, a great deal has been achieved at the Club by the team and members alike. Huge congratulations to John Kemp on attaining qualification and full membership to the renamed Staysure Tour. We wish John well for the season ahead and look forward to seeing him compete at Woburn when we once again stage the Travis Perkins Masters at the end of August. As well as golf course projects, improvements and renovations in the form of pathways, drainage installations and bunker reshaping, we have been busy undertaking training and development plans and more recently, recruiting some new faces to the Club for the season ahead. I trust you will give them all a warm welcome to Woburn. The winter has allowed time to reflect on the coaching team at Woburn and I was delighted to announce that Dan Grieve has been appointed Head Professional. Following this appointment, Jordan Bazzone has achieved the role of Golf Professional and will join Dan and Jamie Donaldson as a full-time golf instructor, based at Woburn. I would like to pass my personal thanks and those of my team, to Mr Mark Randell. During his time on the Committee, Mark was a fantastic support to the team at the Club and contributed greatly to the Social, Handicap and Competitions Committees. The significance of the sub-committees (Social, Handicap and Competitions) becomes more and more apparent with each passing year. The interaction between management and membership at these meetings is fundamental to the running of the Club and to ensuring that we continue to provide a varied and appropriate social and competitions calendar. I would like to welcome Mr Gary Johnstone as the new Vice Captain and I am pleased that we have been able to co-opt Mr Craig Watson onto the Club Committee with immediate effect, therefore ensuring that this support and interaction continues. Finally, I do hope that some good weather comes our way and that the season ahead is a successful one, both on and off the golf course. Enjoy! We were very sad that one of our Founder Members, Harold Leake, passed away on 22nd February. Harold joined the Club in 1976 and he and his wife Dorothy were Captain and Lady Captain together in 1984. During their year in office they introduced a Mixed Fourball Competition, The Leake Trophy, which has been played for annually ever since and which they have continued to support, not only by providing all the prizes but also by their attendance. Harold will be missed by his many friends at Woburn. Gary Johnstone Vice Captain Craig Watson New Committee Member Committee changes At the end of January we advised members that we had accepted the resignation of Mr Mark Randell both as Vice Captain and from the Committee. Mark made an important contribution to the work of the Committee and the Club is grateful for his hard work and dedication. We are pleased to advise members that Mr Gary Johnstone has subsequently accepted the position of Vice Captain and in accordance with Rule25a, Mr Craig Watson has been co-opted on to the Committee to fill the remaining vacancy. CLUB CAPTAIN - MARK COLLENDER My year as Captain started with two fantastic social events, the Theme night and the Christmas Carol Dinner. Both were highly successful and my thanks to James and the social committee for the superb organisation of these events. The Captain’s Dinner was equally successful. Tony Rae and the team as ever didn’t disappoint with the meal, with the beef Wellington being my personal highlight. I had several compliments regarding the whole night so thank you all for your support. Congratulations to Charlie O’Brien, Nathan Shelton, Fiona Llewellyn, Sheila Sinfield and Jim Moffatt for winning the Alex Hay Texas Scramble, as usual everyone enjoyed the day and it’s a great example of what golf should be about. I was relieved to get the Captain’s Drive-in out of the way, despite my prayers for snow it went ahead, I had two thoughts in my head, make contact and get it past Cliff’s attempt last year. Luckily I made contact and nobody was more surprised than me when it sailed down the middle of the fairway and passed Cliff’s attempt by around 150 Yards! The Challenge matches are now in ‘full swing’. Many thanks go to those who have challenged us and those who are intending to challenge us this year. All the money goes to great charities. Please make sure you make every effort to attend the Challenge match dinner, which is on 26th October this year. You may notice the charity box on reception for Keech Children’s Hospice, please feel free to put any loose change you may have into the box as a famous retailer says, ‘every little helps.’ The England v Celts match was another great day and very well supported, my thanks to Bob Fairful for his continued support, England won by a narrow margin and as always Bob and his team were gracious in defeat! The selection for Club matches has now taken place and by now you should have heard which matches you have been selected for. I would ask you all to ensure having been selected you play and are also available for the social side before and after the match. Social functions continue to be well attended, however we would welcome your thoughts and ideas for future events. A full review of the social calendar is underway and we would value your input. It’s important that we hold social events that appeal to as many of you as possible and any input you have would be most welcome. Well done and thanks go to John Clarke and all his team for all that they do year after year. Despite some awful weather this winter and spring, the courses are in fantastic condition, John’s ethos is for us as members to be able to play golf all year round. It’s his proactive actions that enable this so please be patient when any work is being undertaken, we all benefit in the end. The email invite has gone out for the Kevin Byram Swindle day so please enter your teams as soon as possible for this great day. It would be remiss of me not to take this opportunity to thank Mark Randell for all his hard work over the past three years on the committee. He has not only made an important contribution to the Club but on a personal basis he has been very supportive to me. I am pleased to announce that Gary Johnstone has accepted to be my Vice Captain, Gary has been a member of the Club for many years and I have no doubt he will make a great Captain. He is married to Sarah and they have two children. He will now join me in the Captain/Vice Captain challenges, which we are both looking forward to. I would also like to welcome Craig Watson to the committee, Craig joined the Club five years ago along with his wife Michelle and since then they have both embraced the playing and social aspect of the Club. Craig and Michelle have one daughter who lives in Australia. Craig works for Savills as the Chief Financial Officer. Finally, may I thank those of you who have emailed or spoken to me directly so far this year, with comments and suggestions. Your thoughts and ideas are greatly appreciated and I would like to remind you that the Club committee is there to represent you all, so please continue to do so. Best wishes for the golfing season. LADY CAPTAIN - RITA WHITMORE What an appropriate start to the social events this year! I organised Swiss weather for a snowy Christmas lunch and about half of the Ladies were brave enough to master the slippery journey to the Club. The enormous snowman was a fantastic surprise and surely will make it into Woburn’s record books, needless to say the golf planned in the morning was cancelled! The Monday winter roll up competitions seem to be enjoyed by many and we will try to play a few more next winter. The beauty of these social competitions is playing with different partners and the flexibility of how many holes we play, depending on the weather. The ladies working on their crafty gifts ...and the end results The Ladies Coffee Morning on Monday 12th February was very relaxed and it was great to see the Ladies in a completely different environment, some more confident with the crafts theme than others. It is lovely to hear that some of you tried new crafty techniques at home since. I heard that many husbands were impressed by their lovingly handmade Valentines cards! Keep it up girls! I hope you enjoyed making all of your little masterpieces and at the same time we raised £160 for Willen Hospice. I cannot remember using so many handwarmers during one winter but we all love to see the bright sun so often and we are not really missing the drizzly damp weather. Mark and I have already played about ten mixed challenge matches. So far I only supplied hot mulled wine topped up with an extra special secret ingredient, which unfortunately doesn’t work consistently to our advantage. I really enjoy the Captain’s relaxed way of playing the Foursome matches with me, he is hiding the stress I put him under very well. Especially this year, I am glad we have only just started to play the Ladies/Vice challenges and we start the Pro challenges in April, I hope you agree that we Ladies prefer these social games on a warm and sunny day. I am really looking forward to all the matches and I know my partners are too. It would be great if you could put Friday, 26th October into your diaries for the Challenge matches dinner. Now I wish everybody many enjoyable rounds of golf during what will hopefully be a beautiful summer. 3
