Woburn Member, John Kemp, turns professional and secures his card to play on the Staysure Tour Having played amateur golf at a very high level for a number of years Woburn member, John Kemp decided to have a go at qualifying to play on the Staysure Tour, formerly known as the European Seniors Tour. At the end of January, having led 1st Stage Qualifying out of a field of 160 players he went on to compete in Final Stage Qualifying in which only the Top 5 players qualify to compete on the Staysure Tour. John played under immense pressure in the knowledge of what was at stake and finished 4 shots behind in 2nd place on -3. He has subsequently turned Professional and competed for the first time as a professional when he played in the Sharjah Senior Golf Masters in the United Emirates in early March. There will be plenty of home support for John when he competes in the Travis Perkins Masters on the Duke’s course from Friday 31st August to Sunday 2nd September. We wish John the very best of luck as he embarks on his new career in golf and look forward to following his success. CAPTAIN AND LADY CAPTAIN ‘DRIVE IN’ Club Captain, Mark Collender drives off watched by a gallery The Lady Captain, Rita Whitmore determined not to be out driven On conclusion of the mornings play in the Alex Hay Texas Scramble everyone went out to watch the new Captain, Mark Collender and Lady Captain, Rita Whitmore ‘Drive In’ from the 1st tee on the Duchess course using an old hickory club and an old Dunlop 65 golf ball. Rita and Mark both hit fantastic shots before retreating to the clubhouse for a two course lunch and the prizegiving for the Alex Hay Texas Scramble. It was a great day and as always a wonderful way to get the Club into a festive mood for December. Alex Hay Texas Scramble On Sunday 3rd December, 135 members played the Duke’s and Duchess courses in the Alex Hay Texas Scramble, which is a bogey competition played off scratch against the Par of the course. This event was first played for in 1980 and as always, there was a draw for teams making it a very social occasion and an ideal opportunity for members to meet and play with others who otherwise they might not have met. The winning team led by Charlie O'Brien as Team Captain, included Nathan Shelton, Fiona Llewellyn, Sheila Sinfield and Jim Moffatt on the Duke’s course with a fantastic score of +13 up on the course. Lady Captain’s Dinner Rita Whitmore’s, Lady Captain’s Dinner on the 16th March was full of Swiss themed surprises. The food, cleverly created by the talented Woburn chefs included a traditional Swiss chicken dish with potato rösti and the dessert was of course chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate! The Lady Captain, who was joined by her family, gave a very eloquent and amusing speech and then Frances Jones, an Alphorn player kicked off the evening’s entertainment and was joined, as a surprise to the audience, by the Classical Duo, Hayley Moss and Benjamin Lake. We reached the semi-final where we played at Castle Royle and narrowly lost. The consensus from the squad was that they enjoyed playing and having competitive fixtures across the winter so we will hopefully be entering again next year. The first scratch fixture of the year is the Junior Pairs Challenge competition on the 7th of April where we will be teeing it up alongside some of our up and coming junior members. Our first league match is away at Ellesborough on Sunday 15th April and then two weeks later we head to Walton Heath for the weekend, when we will be playing both courses. We are all very much looking forward to this fixture and to representing Woburn at one of the other top courses in the country.
