GEORGIA EXPERIENCE | GRADE 5 | CHAPTER 11 Inquiry-Based Learning INQUIRY-BASED LEARNING CHAPTER OPENER: PART 2 Begin with Student Workbooks closed. Tell students they are starting a new chapter about the Cold War. Write “The Cold War” on your whiteboard. Have students develop questions about the Cold War: • Students spend the first few minutes writing questions independently. • Then the class or small groups collaborate to create a question board. • Give students time to think of new questions that build on the questions already shared. Examples of questions your students might create: • Why is it called the Cold War? • What countries was it between? • What was it about? • Who won? • How many people died? • When was it? • How long did it last? • Where was it? • Was the U.S. involved? • How did it start? How did it end? • Are those countries enemies or friends today? • Was it a world war? • What equipment/technology/planes/etc., did they use? • If somebody won, what did they get? • If somebody lost, what did they lose? SAMPLE Record questions and answers to revisit at the end of the chapter. Differentiation: Give students who need help formulating questions a copy of Gallopade’s Question Prompts Graphic Organizer to write their questions on. ©Gallopade • All Rights Reserved • www.gallopade.com Permission is granted to use Toolbox only with students for whom a current-year Experience Class Set is purchased. 5
