APRIL WHERE NOW The month’s top entertainment, exhibits, attractions, and more BUDAPEST SPRING FESTIVAL La créme of Budapest art ● A sure sign of spring, BSF takes the city’s concert halls, galleries and museums with triumphant fanfare each year. Starting 30 March, Budapest’s major festival spans all art forms, from top-notch classical to reckless contemporary. BSF provides a golden opportunity to explore Budapest’s venerable venues. A concert of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Rudolf Buchbinder (pictured) takes place 2 April, at the beautiful Liszt Academy. ART FESTIVAL 7 DAYS OF ART → A full week of guided tours, gallery visits and workshops, Budapest Art Week offers an abundance of activities. 70 venues await with 150 programs: you can explore galleries, hidden locations, churches, public statues or even the subway if you register. If that’s too much hassle, just walk in to any of the numerous galleries with extended opening hours. Malkovich’s chameleon-like quality and Sandro’s skill recreate images and scenes that inevitably strike a chord. Walk through a hall of fame conceived by two geniuses. Despite the instrument's historic value, works by Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, Vivaldi resound with fresh grandeur. The concert series features award-winning singer Kolos Kovats and Eleonora Krusic on flute, completing the somber sound of the majestic organ. 5, 12, 19 and 26 April, 8pm, St. Stephen's Basilica – Listing p.12. OPERA A MASKED BALL Verdi’s most daring opera proved too volatile to pass the censors in its time, but now you can see the original tale, as the master intended. The production directed by award-winning Fabio Ceresa premiers on the 21st. 5 more performances follow, suited to month’s politically charged atmosphere. 21,22,26 & 27 7pm, 28-29 11am, Erkel Theater – Listing p.12, www.opera. hu C8 EXHIBIT THE PLAIN SCHOOL Focusing on Hódmezővásárhely, which has served as the center for art in the Great Plain, this exhibition shows how 90 years of visual arts reflect this world, characterized by broad horizons and traditional lifestyle. The turbulence of the 20th century filters through the lull of the Plain, the emblematic Hungarian landscape of the romantic imagination.
