JULIA MCKAY / KINSTON WHIG-STANDARD FRONTS SELECT MURRAY IN FIRST ROUND by Doug Graham, Kingston Whig-Standard The Kingston Frontenacs believe they got one of the franchise-type defencemen that were available in a deep and talented Ontario Hockey League draft on Saturday. Jacob Murray, described by OHL Central Scouting as “a two-way defenceman who moves extremely well,” was picked 13th overall by the Frontenacs in the Priority Selection. Murray, who turns 16 on Wednesday, is six-foot-three, 188 pounds. He played for the Oakville Rangers, picking up 11 goals and 40 points in 38 games with the minor midget AAA squad. “He’s a good pick,” said Doug Gilmour, Kingston president of hockey operations. “Big, skates well and his fitness is off the wall.” Barrie Colts general manager Jason Ford on Friday night had talked about there being “five or six franchise-type defencemen available in the first round.” The Frontenacs believe Murray is one of them. OFFICIAL GAMEDAY PROGRAM, VOLUME 45, 2018 “He is a guy we liked all year from the start to the end. We think he brings lots of tools to our team,’’ Frontenacs head scout Aaron Van Leusen, who ran the show at the Kingston draft table, said. “He is physically there. He has really good work ethic on and off the ice. He is definitely a prepared individual.” With no idea who they would get with their first pick, the Frontenacs did not ask Murray to travel to Kingston on Saturday to meet the team’s brass. Gilmour said Murray would be attending Sunday’s Game 3 of Kingston’s Eastern Conference semifinal with Barrie. The Frontenacs’ next two picks were forwards – Zayde Wisdom from the OHL Cup-winning Toronto Jr. Canadiens and Bryce Ryan from the Windsor Jr. Spitfires. Wisdom is 5-10, 215 pounds and can play either at centre or on the wing. “He is deceivingly fast for his size. He’s got really good speed and edges,” Van Leusen said. “He’s a guy that played in big games. We are thrilled to have him.” Van Leusen said Ryan, who played up in junior B for LaSalle after his minor midget season was over, showed he can handle the next level. “He’s over six feet, has got good size and moves very well. Great puck protection skills. He can generate offence by using his hockey IQ,” Van Leusen said. “We are really happy with the two forwards that were there. I think they will jump into our lineup and eventually be impact guys.” The Frontenacs only had the three picks in the first six rounds. The team had 10 picks from the seventh to the 15th round. “We are excited with the latter half. We think there is good value there,” Van Leusen said. Goaltender Mathias Onuska from the Waterloo Wolves was picked in the seventh round, followed by another defenceman, Thomas Hayes from the Mississauga Senators, in Round 8. The Frontenacs filled out the day by selecting leftwinger Kallaway Mercer, centre Liam Babcock, defenceman Matthew Wong, centre Owen Air, defenceman Alexander Caulfield, left wingers Tyler Bortkiewicz and Boyd Stahlbaum and goaltender Sam Dingle from the Greater Kingston Jr. Frontenacs. - KF 27
