Annual Report for the year of our Lord 2017 Ladies Guild Ladies Guild continues to flourish and has enjoyed a varied and interesting programme over the past twelve months. Our meetings, each Wednesday evening at 7:30pm, have been reasonably well attended including our church services on our first meeting in September, Ash Wednesday and the local Carol Service when we are joined by the Mothers’ Union, followed by friendship and hospitality of sherry and mince pies in the Parish Centre. Our membership remains reasonably good and I hope members have found our meetings interesting. Sadly, two of our members died during the past year, namely Beryl Bevan and Jean Jones. Both were very faithful members of Ladies Guild for many years – both lovely ladies who are missed very much by us all. It is always nice to welcome speakers from our own area. We ambled along the tracks of the Mumbles Railway from Blackpill to the pier in the company of local historian John Powell; Sarah Davies, of the craft shop ‘Sew Sweet William’ on Gower Road (which is now sadly closed) spoke of her designing and sewing her personalized cushions and fabric collages. Another wonderful evening was a talk by the late Olive Moffatt, aged 94, most senior (in age) member of our Guild, told us of her life growing up in St Thomas – most enjoyable. Our annual summer trip was a visit to the Royal Mint at Llantrisant. The tour began with a short film, narrated by Dan Snow, about the history and coin making capabilities of the Mint which produces 90 million coins per week, including blanks for 60 overseas countries. The tour was enjoyed by everyone and ended by our guide telling the history of the 1100 years of the Mint from the original site in Mint Street at the Tower of London, moving to Tower Hill in the 1880’s and finally to Llantrisant in 1964. We ended our session this year with a visit to Llandaff Cathedral. As we entered the cathedral, we were greeted by the magnificent sight of Epstein’s Majestas towering above the Nave – a fascinating afternoon enjoyed by all. Ladies Guild is also involved in the Summer and Autumn Parish Fayres, weekly Luncheon Club, involvement with baptisms and festivals including the Christmas Tree and Flower Festivals. Our Christmas shopping trips plus our two theatre visits are greatly appreciated and much enjoyed. Our regular good attendance enables the committee to use, in part, funds to help various charities and, this year, we have donated in excess of £1000; also £300 to St Hilary’s Church, £100 to Wales Air Ambulance and £100 to Ty Hafan Childrens Hospice. I would like to thank our vicar, Canon Phillip Gwynn, for his arrangements and involvement in our meaningful church services, Pam Davies for all the work involved as our secretary, Marian Williams as treasurer and all the committee and members who help me so much. All are very welcome to join us at our meetings on a Wednesday evening at 7:30pm. Another successful year – thank you all so much.
