Wednesday April 11 2018 Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi World championship medal for Sumner cross-country runner • By Gordon Findlater SUMNER’S SOFIA Kennedy helped the New Zealand girls team to a bronze medal finish at the ISF World Championship Cross Country in Paris. Kennedy, 17, played a vital role in the six-strong team winning bronze. The total of the top-four finishers from each team are combined to reach a total team score. The team with the lowest total score wins gold. The secondary school-age event saw more than 600 runners, from 33 countries, across five continents, run under the Eiffel tower as part of the 4150m course. The Sumner runner was the fourth Kiwi home, finishing 29th in the 100-strong race girls race. She completed the course in 14min 19sec, 46sec behind race winner Ella Heeney from Australia. Kennedy’s tally combined with Hannah O’Conner (fourth), Aimee Fergusson (fifth), Phoebe McKnight (11th) equalled 49 points which was good enough for third behind Australia (29pts) and England (33pts). The accomplishment saw the NZ girls finish ahead of renowned middle distance running countries such as Morocco, France and Algeria. ACCOMPLISHMENT: Sofia Kennedy (left) was part of the New Zealand girls team which won bronze in Paris. Kennedy was the only South Island member of the girls team. The NZ boys team finished fifth on 89 points behind Morocco (29pts), England (35pts), Algeria (62pts) and Spain (74pts). The boys team featured SPORTS Christchurch runners Andres Hernandez and Dion Houston. BAY HARBOUR PAGE 15 Clarke chosen for NZ team TAYLORS MISTAKE teenage surf lifesaver Louis Clarke has been selected in the 10-strong New Zealand team to compete at the Sanyo Cup in Japan. The annual international event, which is run by the Japan Lifesaving Association, will take place from June 23-24 in Fukuoka, Japan. The beach-based competition will be run with the same programme on each day including surf, board, ski and ocean person races, beach flags, sprints and other team events. Clarke, 16, recently won his first maiden open grade event at the New Zealand Surf Life Saving Championships in Gisborne when he powered to victory in the men’s surf race. Clarke was also named in the national youth development squad following the event. The New Zealand team for the Sanyo Cup will join teams from Australia, United States, Great Britain, Netherlands, South Africa, Hong Kong and Japan. The overall winning team will be determined by combined points across the two days of competition. Bonus point win for Wave • By Gordon Findlater SUMNER HAD the perfect start to their Hawkins Cup campaign with a commanding bonus point win over Linwood at Linfield Park on Saturday. Linwood’s front row may have featured All Black tighthead prop Owen Franks. However, they were no match for the wave who romped to a 43-14 victory. Sumner found themselves trailing midway through the opening half before taking command through tries to Josh Loader (two), Filimoni Waqainabete (two), William Saukuru, Tom Crozier, Samuela Tawake and Tom Ziolo. It gave Sumner the perfect opening to their season. The reserve team nearly had the perfect start to their season against Linwood also. After trailing for the majority of the match they made a late surge to level the score at 19-all before coming within metres of stealing a win. “We ended up trying to run it out from our own dead ball line and ended up getting tackled into touch 5m from their try line to end the game,” said Sumner coach Martin Dodgson. Sumner are also on the road for their second game of the season. This Saturday they face Marist Albion at Edgar MacIntosh. JOIN US NOW!
