Tuesday 10 April 2018 20 BUSINESS DAY C002D5556 Energy Report NNPC set for $2.8bn ground-breaking of gas pipeline project OLUSOLA BELLO The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation NNPC) said arrangements were being concluded for the groundbreaking of the 40inch x 614km Ajaokuta - Kaduna – Kano, (AKK), gas pipeline and stations in the weeks ahead. The corporation said following last week’s successful execution of contract agreements for the engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning and financing for Lots 1&3 of the over $2.8billion trans-Nigeria gas pipeline project, measures had been activated for the flag-off of what has been described as the single biggest gas pipeline project in the history of oil & gas operation in Nigeria. Upon completion, 24 months from now, the AKK gas pipeline would enable connectivity between the East, West and North, currently nonexistent. It would also enable gas supply and utilization to key commercial centres in the Northern corridor of Nigeria with the attendant positive spin-off on power generation and industrial growth. Providing details of the contract awarded to consortium of indigenous and Chinese entities under a 100 per cent contractor financing model, the NNPC said Lot 1 with total length of 40inch x 200km stretching from Ajaokuta to Abuja Terminal Gas Station awarded to the OilServe/ Oando Consortium had a contract value of about $855million. Lot 2 whose contract agreement is yet to be executed covers 40inch x 193km, stretching from Abuja to Kaduna with contract value of about $835 million. The NNPC said Lot 3 which runs from Kaduna Terminal Gas Station (TGS) to Kano TGS with total length of 40inch x 221km was awarded to the Brentex/China Petroleum Pipeline Bureau (CPP) Consortium under a contract value of about $1.2 billion. The above brought the total value of the entire project to over $2.8billion as approved by the Federal Executive Council at its 46th meeting on 13th December, 2017. For so long, NNPC had activated an aggressive gas reforms and implementation drive, requiring accelerated implementation of gas pipeline infrastructure development with specific focus on critical pipeline infrastructure to power plants and industries. Between 2010 and today, almost 500km of pipelines had been completed, commissioned and now delivering gas. Some of the completed pipelines included the Oben-Geregu (196km), Escravos-Warri-Oben (110km), Emuren-Itoki (50km), Itoki-Olorunshogo (31km), Imo River-Alaoji (24km) and Ukanafun-Calabar pipeline (128km). In addition, there is ongoing construction of the strategic East-West OB3 pipeline (127km), scheduled for completion by Q3 2018 and the expansion of the Escravos-Lagos Gas Pipeline System scheduled for completion later in 2018. With the growth in infrastructure, gas, hitherto inaccessible and flared, is now being utilised. Nigeria had seen the most aggressive drop in gas flaring from a peak of 2500mmcf/d few years ago to about 700mmcf/d currently and reducing. Dan Agundi, Kano, 60 MVA transformer is in service - TCN The Management of Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, has denied that the newly installed 60 MVA transformer in Dan Agundi Substation in Kano broke down two days after installation as reported in the Nation Newspaper online platform credited to Sani Bala Sani, Head, Corporate Communications, Kano Electricity Distribution Company. In a release by the company and signed by the General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, TCN said the transformer did not break down but tripped following the fault on the Kano DisCo 33kV Club feeder. TCN’s power transformers are installed with high efficiency protection devices that trip the transformers when distribution feeders develop faults in order to preserve the transformers. If the power transformers are not adequately protected, then any distribution fault would destroy the power transformers, which cost fortunes to install or replace. When the Dan Agundi Transformer tripped on Thursday, 29th March, TCN immediately informed Kano DisCo representatives who patrolled and cleared the fault before the power transformer was restored same day and wheeled 30 MW to Kano DisCo load centres. The 60MVA Dan Agundi Transformer is still in operation supplying bulk power to the Kano DisCo load centres for onward distribution to her customers. TCN is committed to increasing its capacity to wheel more reliable power to all DisCo load centres nationwide. The several on-going transmission projects in various parts of the country are pointers to this TCN Management commitment, which is supported by several multi-lateral donors and the Presidency. Tuesday 10 April 2018 BDTECH In association with BUSINESS DAY 21 Smartphone review: Tecno Camon X Stories by JUMOKE AKIYODE-LAWANSON Tecno mobile seems to be up to the task with the fierce competition in Nigeria’s smartphone market. The Chinese OEM just keeps launching newer and more modern devices ever so often – upgrading with time and technological advancements I must say. Last week Thursday, April 5 2018, Tecno mobile launched its latest flagship devices – the Camon X and X pro. Although the Camon X has a few similarities to the Camon CM released a few months ago, Tecno has made some remarkable improvements including the new face ID, more advanced rear and front camera quality and a slightly larger screen display, among others. I got the Tecno Camon X a few days, got to try out its new qualities and features and it is safe to say the pros of the phone outweigh the cons. You decide whether to make the switch. Design: The relatively light weight phone comes in a plastic casing, which gives it a less luxurious look, however, the plastic casing makes the phone much easier to grip and less prone to breakage and cracks on or around the device. Tecno mobile has given an added advantage by adding a free phone cover in the box of the Tecno Camon X, so there’s less worry about having to buy a case to protect your phone. The edges of the phone are also well rounded which gives it a soft, nice look. With 6” (six inch) full HD display, 2.5D corning third glass and a ratio 18:9 full view screen, the phone allows for more content with less scroll. It’s also a Smile offers 1GB free data, free faulty device swap for 1 year In its continued quest to always delight its teeming subscribers, Smile Nigeria has introduced another attractive value adding service from its rich repertoire of value adding services. This time around, Smile is making it possible for its customers to enjoy free 1GB data daily for 365days on a minimum of 500MB daily usage from their paid bundle. Aptly dubbed “Get 1GB free daily for 365Days” the service is specifically blessing when watching movies, videos or when playing games on your phone. Specs: Those of you that are not so technology inclined might thinks of phone specifications as jargons, but I’m going to take my time to clearly explain in writing, the specifications of the Camon X and why these are important. First, the Tecno Camon X comes with a 2.0GHz Octa- Core processor which gives the advantage of being able to multi task. ‘Octa’, as the name implies means eight, and in smartphone terms, more cores provide more capacity to mobile performing many tasks in the single instance. Secondly, Tecno Camon X runs on Android 8.1 system and comes with (16GB ROM). designed for customers that have not used their Smile device in the last 90days. The service ensures that those who use a minimum of 500MB in a day from their paid bundle will get 1GB of data for free to use the next day. The ubiquitous nature of the offer extends to the fact that data can be used for voice, internet, video streaming and SMS. Another attraction of the offer is that data utilisation is valid This means 16 gigabytes of space used to store files, apps music and the operating system (OS) and 3GB RAM which is its volatile memory. The memory space on the device is quite adequate, however, I would have preferred a slightly larger memory space. With its 3750mAh battery, the Tecno Camon X can last up to 24hours with full usage without having to recharge. This excited me, as battery power is usually the first concern for Nigerian smartphone users, due to unstable power supply. Camera: Like many other people, the first thing I am interested in when it comes to smartphone is the camera quality. The Tecno Camon X, with its 20 mega pixel (20MP) front facing camera with dual flash and 16MP at anytime of the day. The offer avails the customer of free 1GB data that is valid for one day. In a similar development, Smile has given its customers an opportunity to have their faulty devices replaced at no additional cost to them. A statement from the company indicates that effective Monday April 3 2018, customers can swap their faulty Smile devices for free. Smile launched West Africa’s rear camera with ring flash, produces clearer, sharper and more defined picture quality even in low light conditions. Tecno has clearly set itself as the king of selfie cameras with its precise attention to selfie cameras on almost all its smartphones. A down side to the camera on the Camon X is that it does not come with a portrait mode on the back camera. I was anticipating a dual camera set up at the back. However, its super pixel mode will add more pixels to your shot. Face ID and other features: The face identification technology is the newest feature addition to both the Camon X and the Camon X pro. Just like the new Samsung and Apple devices and the Infinix HOT S3, as well as some other smartphones, the face ID on the Tecno Camon X is a new security feature that can be used to unlock the device. This is in addition to its finger print scanner at the back of the device. By grasping the face information, the face ID on Camon X has 50 millisecond (50ms) recognition rate that makes it super fast to unlock. However, the face ID does not work in extreme low light condition so you might be better off using the other unlocking options while in the dark. Also, during hot weather conditions, the HiOS UI (mobile operating system that allows for a wide range of user customisation without requiring rooting the mobile device) identifies components causing heating in the background and quickly cools off the phone through a series of methods. Pricing: The price of the Tecno Camon X is yet to be announced, but as mid range phones, I expect both the Camon X and Camon X pro to be between N58, 000 and N65, 000 or there about. first true 4G LTE network in Ibadan in 2013 thereby revolutionising the way people access the internet. The company has, repeatedly, been applauded for bringing fast, reliable mobile broadband service to Nigeria for Nigerians. It has also received plaudits for innovative services and customercentric products. One of such is the recent win of Telecoms leadership prize 2018.
