Emerald Ash Borer Confirmed in
Two More Vermont Counties
The Vermont Department of Forests, Parks
and Recreation (FPR) and the Vermont
Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets
(VAAFM) announced today that the emerald
ash borer (EAB) has been detected in two
additional Vermont counties. Samples were
collected in Washington County and Caledonia
County on March 16th during a survey for the
insect. Samples collected from three Vermont
counties have now been confirmed to be
emerald ash borer by USDA taxonomists.
State and federal officials have been conducting
a geographically-targeted survey following
the initial detection of EAB in northern
Orange County late last month. The survey
is focused on determining the scope of
infestation in the state. Results from the survey
will assist government officials in making
informed decisions including management
recommendations and the implementation
of a pending quarantine.
In general, management in areas infested
with EAB focuses on slowing the spread of
the insect. Eradication of the pest itself is not
considered to be a viable option. Citizens can
help mitigate the spread of EAB by limiting
the movement of potentially infested material
such as firewood. Vermont currently prohibits
bringing untreated firewood into the state.

Citizens are encouraged to look for signs
and symptoms of the emerald ash borer and
report suspicious findings on VTinvasives.

agriculture.vermont.gov/Emerald_Ash_

on F&W Website
Hunters who provided the Vermont Fish & Wildlife
Department with a tooth from their deer last year can now find
out how old their deer was by visiting the department’s website,
www.vtfishandwildlife.com.
Hunters submitted 2,808 teeth from the bucks they took
during the November rifle deer season. Combined with the
1,207 deer examined by biologists at reporting stations during
the youth and rifle seasons, biologists were able to get accurate
ages for 4,015 deer.
“We are thankful to the thousands of hunters who were
willing to support our deer management efforts by bringing
their deer to a biological reporting station or providing us with
a tooth from their deer,” said Deer Project Leader Nick Fortin.
“We are also grateful to the reporting stations that helped collect
teeth from the deer they reported. This effort would not
have been as successful without their assistance.”
If a hunter’s deer was three years old or older and it wasn’t
examined by a biologist at a reporting station, Fish & Wildlife
would like a picture of its antlers. To help, hunters can send a
picture (or two) to AntlerPics@vermont.gov. Pictures should
clearly show all antler points. Please include your name and
Conservation ID, or other identifying information in the
email.

Shooting Range Grant
Application Deadline
Extended to April 15
Vermont Fish & Wildlife has extended its deadline to apply
for shooting range improvement grants to April 15.
Developed to encourage upgrades of shooting ranges to
enhance their safety and operation, the Shooting Range
Improvement Grant Program seeks grant applications from
clubs and government agencies involved in the operation of
shooting ranges, including archery ranges until 4:30 p.m. The
grant period begins July 1, 2018.
Eligible projects include shooting range re-development,
noise abatement structures, safety berms, shooting benches,
overhead shelters, and the construction or improvement of
access roads and parking lots. Grant money may also be used
for lead mitigation, such as recycling, reducing range floor
surface drainage or liming range property.
An estimated $80,000 in grant funds will be available this
year. These funds are derived through the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service Wildlife Restoration Program which is based
on federal excise taxes on hunting and shooting equipment.
Ranges that receive one of these grants must provide at least
20 hours of public use per month when in operation and be
open at reasonable times for hunter education courses.

Thunder Road Gearing Up for 59th Season Opener
Thunder Road is getting set to open its 59th season of racing
on Sunday, April 29 with the Community Bank N.A. 150 for the
American-Canadian Tour (ACT). The 20th edition of the event
has teams and fans buzzing as they prepare for another year atop
Quarry Hill.
Racers from all across the Northeastern U.S. and Quebec are
expected for the event that has served as the traditional season
opener since 1999. With the Lenny’s Shoe & Apparel Flying
Tigers, Allen Lumber Stocks, and Burnett Scrap Metals Road
Warriors also on the card, a huge field of race cars is anticipated.
The opener comes a year after Cris Michaud and Pat Malone
took ownership of the track from founder Ken Squier and late
promoter Tom Curley. With a full year under their belts, both are
looking to build on a 2017 season that saw the speedway named
one of the top-3 short tracks in the United States by Speed51.

“We can’t wait to get the season underway,” Michaud said.
“We’ve made a number of capital improvements over the winter
that we’ll be unveiling on Opening Day. We’re also starting to
see the benefits of the work done in recent years to solidify our
weekly divisions so they’ll continue to be successful long-term.
All we need now is for the snow to finish melting!”
The Community Bank N.A. 150 is the first in a 19-event
Thunder Road schedule. Many popular events from previous
seasons have returned, including the Mekkelsen RV Memorial
Day Classic on May 27, the Aubuchon Hardware Holiday
Spectacular on July 3, the VP Racing Fuels Vermont Governor’s
Cup on July 19, and the Coca-Cola Labor Day Classic on
September 2. The Myers Container Services Triple Crown Series
for the Flying Tigers will also be back for its second season. The

Road Warriors will compete at 10 events after a wildly successful
return in 2017.
Several new schedule additions will also be seen this summer.
The Street Stocks will take part in a new Twin State Series with
Speedway 51, featuring Thunder Road events on June 21 and
August 5. A third day of racing has also been added for the
Vermont Milk Bowl weekend. Milk Bowl Friday presented by
Northfield Savings Bank on September 28 will feature the Pro
All Stars Series, the North East Mini Stock Tour, and the 8-cylinder
Street Stock Showdown Series.
“The Community Bank 150 is just the first of many great
events this year,” Michaud said. “We want Thunder Road to be a
showplace for Northeast short track racing. To do that, you need
to take care of your weekly racers while also bringing in the
regional series that fans want to see. We think the schedule has
something positive for everyone.”
The 59th season of Thunder Road racing will begin on
Sunday, April 29 at 1:00pm. The Community Bank N.A. 150 will
feature the ACT Late Model Tour plus many of the stars of the
Maplewood/Irving Thunder Road Late Models. The Lenny’s
Shoe & Apparel Flying Tigers, Allen Lumber Street Stocks, and
Burnett Scrap Metals Road Warriors will complete a packed day
of racing. Admission is $25 for adults and free for kids age 12
and under.
The weekend begins on Saturday, April 28 with the annual
Downtown Barre Car Show. Cars from all divisions will line the
streets of Barre from 9:00am to 12:00pm followed by a parade to

It’s almost time for spring turkey hunting in
Vermont. Youth spring turkey hunting weekend
is April 28 and 29 this year, and the regular
spring turkey season is May 1-31.
Vermont hunters set an all-time record last
year when they took 6,599 turkeys in the spring
youth weekend and May seasons. The previous
spring record occurred in 2013 when 6,365
birds were taken in the spring.
The April 28 and 29 youth turkey hunting
weekend provides an excellent opportunity for
experienced hunters to teach young hunters
how to safely and successfully hunt wild turkeys.
“Beyond the simple joy of sharing an outdoor
adventure of this sort with a young friend,
experienced hunters can take satisfaction in
knowing they’ve introduced these youths to
some of the most exciting and rewarding hunting
the state has to offer,” said Chris Bernier,
Vermont’s wild turkey biologist. “Coupled with
the thrill of ‘talking’ to a gobbler, the typically
high success rates turkey hunters achieve and
the often pleasant spring weather they experience,
the youth turkey hunt is one of the best
ways to introduce youths to the benefits of a
life-long pursuit of hunting.”
Landowner permission is required to hunt on
private land during youth turkey hunting weekend.
To participate, a youth must be age 15 or
under and must have completed a hunter education
course and possess a hunting license, a
turkey hunting license and a free youth turkey
hunting tag. All of these are available on Fish &
Wildlife’s website (www.vtfishandwildlife.
com) or from any license agent.
The youth must be accompanied by an
unarmed licensed adult over 18 years of age.
Shooting hours for the youth weekend are one
half hour before sunrise to 5 p.m. The youth
may take one bearded turkey during youth
weekend and two bearded turkeys in the regular
May hunting season. Last year, young hunters
took 745 turkeys during the two-day youth hunt
with a success rate of 33 percent.
The regular spring turkey hunting season is
May 1-31. Shooting hours are one half hour
before sunrise to 12:00 Noon, and two bearded
turkeys may be taken.
A shotgun or archery equipment may be used
in the youth or regular spring turkey hunting
seasons. Shot size must be no larger than #2
and no smaller than #8.
The success rate last year during the May
season was 29 percent, and of those successful
hunters, 38 percent harvested a second bird
under the two-bird limit.
The 2017 Turkey Harvest Report, available
on the website, has details to help plan a turkey
hunt, including the number of turkeys taken in
each town.
