4 | April 12, 2018 | The frankfort station news frankfortstation.com quidditch From Page 3 much from magical Quidditch, although unfortunately, your feet must be on the ground to play. Even though their feet were on the ground, Ian Coon, Loyola Lumos! Quidditch Club president knows that this is a childhood dream come true for some of these kids. “This is something in their imaginations, or it’s on TV, and a lot of people don’t ever think they’ll get to do this," he said. "Kids especially, they don’t care that they’re not flying, because to them, they are flying, so it’s really great to bring it alive for them." Figuring how to connect the library’s collection and their services to kids and teens is one of the best parts of the job for Rachel Cuzzo, who works as the youth services education specialist at the Frankfort Public Library. When thinking of things she could do to connect pieces of literary works to kids, she said it was a no-brainer to do something with Harry Potter. “Kids love Harry Potter, kids love Quidditch, I just thought it would be super fun for kids to learn how to play the game ‘muggle-style,’ and it’s just a really good connection. People are here, they’re outside, they’re breathing the fresh air,” Cuzzo said. “I’ve always really wanted to do a Quidditch event here at the library since I found out there was such a thing as a Quidditch league in the world.” For Tina Romberg and her son Shane, of Frankfort, Harry Potter is a family thing. The Romberg vehicle was packed with suitcases – as they had just returned from seeing Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway. “We literally just got back from Harry Potter in New York [City]; why do you think I signed him up?” Tina laughed. One of the biggest skills a “muggle” Quidditch team looks for? A willing and accepting attitude. Coon emphasized that Quidditch is about inclusivity, and that being apart of the team isn’t even about playing necessarily. “Our attitude is pretty laid back about everything, there are lots of sports, especially at a school like BUYING OR SELLING? frankfortstation.com news the frankfort station | April 12, 2018 | 5 Lady - A Women’s Expo to return April 21 to Tinley Park Convention Center Jon DePaolis Freelance Reporter It is a Mother’s Day tradition unlike any other. Lady - A Women’s Expo, presented by 22nd Century Media and Planet Fitness, is set to return from 9 a.m.- 1 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at the Tinley Park Convention Center, 18451 Convention Center Drive in Tinley Park. The annual event also is sponsored by the Chicago Sky, Ingalls Health System and Celebrity Cruises. The free event has more than 100 vendors slated to attend this year — covering health and wellness to fashion and beauty, food to financial planning — making it the largest Lady expo to date, according to Heather Warthen, chief events officer at 22nd Century Media. “The nice thing about this expo that I see year to year is that we see a lot of girls getting together and starting a ladies day out,” Warthen said. “We also draw moms, daughters and granddaughters. That’s what makes me happy. It’s a great prelude into Mother’s Day weekend and a great chance for women of all ages to bond.” Among the highlights this year will be an expanded roster of vendors, as well as entertainment options. “I think people like to see what the vendors have to offer,” Warthen said. “It’s a great opportunity, because we have an entire stage of cooking demos, which is back again this year. We have some great local chefs, and you can pick up some new cooking tips. I know that was a huge draw last year.” She also pointed to the main stage attractions, such as Danni Allen — the winner of Season 14 of “The Biggest Loser” — and plenty free fitness classes, including cardio and yoga. Also returning to the expo this year is Silk Avenue, from Lady – A Women’s Expo: Four hacks to get the most out of your visit Jon DePaolis Freelance Reporter A lot of people will be strolling through the aisles Saturday, April 21, for the fifth annual Lady – A Women’s Expo. We asked Heather Warthen, 22nd Century Media’s chief events officer and resident expert expo authority, for some “hacks” for those who plan to attend, so they can make best use of their time there. 1. Scout ahead: Take a look at the event’s Eventbrite webpage before you head to the convention center. It will have the full list of vendors, an event schedule for the fitness classes, cooking demos and main stage entertainment. Map out some things you definitely want to do and save yourself some idle time. 2. Arrive early to get some swag: Have you ever heard the expression, “The whom attendees can purchase custom-made scarves. “We’ve got something for everybody,” Warthen said. “There’s plenty to do, and I think people like seeing the variety of vendors we get. It’s not all clothing or food or home remodeling or repairs; we really do try to bring in a variety that people will enjoy.” early bird gets the worm?” Well, in this case, early arrivers have the best chance at receiving a free gift bag. There only are 500 of these bad boys, so the closer you arrive to 9 a.m., the better your chance to pick one up. 3. Be a trendsetter; go against the flow: Warthen says that oftentimes, expogoers tend to follow a similar path through the aisles, leading to some congestion at certain spots. One way to avoid that? Be a trailblazer and walk in the opposite direction, by working from the back to the front. 4. Don’t be a hero, choose comfort over style: If those boots aren’t made for walking, leave them at home. With approximately 100 vendors and some serious entertainment, odds are your daily step count is going to exceed your goal. Wear some comfortable shoes.
