mokenamessenger.com SPORTS the Mokena Messenger | April 12, 2018 | 43 Athlete of the Week 10 Questions with Veda Prestamer Veda Prestamer is a senior on the Lincoln- Way East girls badminton team. How long have you been playing badminton, and how did you get started with the sport? I’ve been playing for six murals and it was an intramural sport at my junior high, and coach Evenhouse was the instructor. And so, I’ve been playing ever since with him. What do you most enjoy about badminton? I like the teamwork that we all put in, and it’s reassuring to know that you have a family and a team by your side while you play. How do you typically prepare for a big meet? Normally, the night before, we kind of just take it easy and just stay relaxed. If we’re a little sore from practice or the game before, we ice and eat a big meal and stay relaxed. What does this year’s team do really well? I’d say our confidence has increased. Are you involved in any other sports or activities at East outside of badminton? I ride horses full time and I have three jobs. What are your plans for after high school? I plan on going to college, hopefully becoming a teacher and going to JJC and then transferring to Lewis. Do you have a role model? I look up to my mom because she’s gone through a lot and she doesn’t always have her good days but she always comes to every single game and cheers me on and she always puts herself after me. She always looks to support me as opposed to herself. photo Submitted What advice would you give to someone just starting out with badminton? I would say don’t be nervous. Even though it sounds like a backyard sport, there’s a lot that goes into it and looking up videos and staying confident really helps. What are you most excited about this season? I’m excited for conference, sectionals and then hopefully state. Last year, we fell short of state, but my doubles partner Savanna and I are really looking as No. 1 doubles to make it to state. If you could spend a day with anyone, who would it be? It would probably this famous rider named McLain Ward because he is a super positive role model in the equestrian world, which has been a big part of my life along with badminton. So, it would be cool to spend the day with him.
