When and why did you start playing water polo? I just started because I didn’t have a spring sport and I wanted to try it and I fell in love with it. What do you like most about the sport? I love the competitiveness of it and the team aspect. Do you have any superstitions before a game? I definitely get some sprinting in before the swimoffs. What is one thing people don’t know about you? People probably don’t know that I’m a swimmer. I was on the varsity swim team this year and last year and I guess when I come out and play polo, they don’t know I swim too. If you were a superhero, what superpower would you want? I would just want to fly, it’s pretty sick. What would you do if you won the lottery? I would put it away for college and save it. If you could play another sport, what would it be? I would say soccer since Michal dwojak/22nd century media I grew up playing it and it came to a point where I had to choose travel soccer or travel swimming, and I chose swimming. If it weren’t for the same season, I would still play. What is your favorite area restaurant? I like to go to Marcello’s for the pasta. Pasta Alfredo with chicken is the best. What is one thing on your bucket list? I want to go camping in the mountains. I think that would be a lot of fun since I’m an outdoors person. If you could be any animal, which would you choose? I would be a dolphin because of the swimming. Interview by Sports Editor Michal Dwojak

Mendelson threw a no-hitter toward the end of last season to help prepare her for a final senior campaign. Throwing a no-hitter was also one of the top- 10 goals the team had for the season, but Mendelson being excited to beat Deerfield over throwing a no-hitter shows the type of player and captain Mendelson is. She’s more focused on what the team is doing than her own accomplishments. But that doesn’t mean the accomplishment is anything to scoff at. “Most pitchers are likely to ever get one in their lifetime,” Matsunaga said. “I think she can get one more. This shows you how skilled she is. Sometimes she gets overlooked, but brings a lot to our team. She’s all about team.” Now Mendelson will focus on accomplishing her dreams in her last season with the Spartans. The captain and the other seniors grew up together and want to be the ones to help GBN win a conference championship, one of the other top-10 goals for the season. The program has made progress during her time and she’s ready to see the progress lead to success. “It’s really exciting,” Mendelson said. “I feel like this is the culmination of all the work I’ve put in all four years. It’s exciting looking forward and gets me excited for the rest of the season knowing there’s going to be more and we’re going to be growing.” Matsunaga thinks her pitcher can throw one more no-hitter this season. Let’s see if someone will notice before the final pitch this time.
