NEWS NEW MINISTRY OF ENERGY, NEW SEREMIS Last March 11th was marked by the presidential handover, inaugurating the second government of Sebastián Piñera, and the beginning of the administration of the new Intendants and Ministers announced by the president elect weeks before entering office as President of the Republic. Susana Jimenez took over as Minister of Energy, with Ricardo Irarrazabal as Under Secretary. But there was still the question of who would be the heads of energy at the regional level. The mystery was solved a few weeks later by the regional intendancies, which revealed the list of the new Energy Ministerial Secretaries (Seremis) in the 15 regions of the country (Ñuble will remain under Biobio for some time). Sebastián Herrera was appointed as the new Energy Seremi of the Metropolitan Region. He is a lawyer from the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, and has developed his professional carrier in law firms in charge of natural resources and environmental issues. The process was highly consultative and participatory, where all kinds of social actors set forward their points of view on Geothermal Energy. The Working Group has recently completed its first stage with a report containing the conclusions reached after the process. Gonzalo Torres, President of the Geothermal Council, one of the drivers of this initiative, commented on the importance of this process stating that “the Working Table obtained significant results for the industry, such as its role in the future Chilean energy matrix, estimating the potential of commercially exploitable high-enthalpy geothermal energy in 3,500 MW. We are very satisfied with the results, and now, in 2018, we have the important mission of continuing the work with the new administration, and achieving the establishment of public policies that will finally boost the massive development of this technology”. Organiza Patrocina Produce It is interesting noting that, in parallel to the development of the Geothermal Working Group, the first central based on this technology started operating last year in the country, generating the first geothermal MW in Chile and in South America.
