opprairie.com News The orland park prairie | April 12, 2018 | 3 Orland Park Bitcoin ATM causing social disruption at The Black Sheep Rochelle McAuliffe Freelance Reporter The Black Sheep is the only location in Orland Park known to have Bitcoin ATM, pictured here. Bill Jones/22nd Century Media For The Black Sheep in Orland Park, it is one thing to sound like you are changing the game, but it is a whole other thing to do it. Formerly Zante of Orland, The Black Sheep opened under its new name in December 2015, and from the eclectic food to its wacky themed nights, this social distortion is doing what it can to separate itself from the flock. In February, the bar joined the cryptocurrency movement and installed an ATM that instantly converts cash to digital coins. Since installing the only Bitcoin ATM in Orland Park, it has drawn new customers and even Bitcoin investors to the bar. The ATM transforms cash into a digital currency called Bitcoins. This cryptocurrency operates independently of a central bank, with no government intervention, and allows users to make direct, instantaneous transactions with no fees. There are other kinds of cryptocurrencies, as well, such as Ethereum and Litecoin. To purchase cryptocurrency, one begins with a one-time registration with the ATM. Then, a SMS text code is sent to a cellphone to verify identity. Customers are asked to take a selfie and scan a valid, governmentissued ID. After that, a text confirms the registration has been completed. The customer then can buy between $20 and $500 worth of cryptocurrency. After purchasing, the currency is downloaded to the customer’s wallet. Purchasing through an ATM allows consumers to buy cryptocurrency in a quicker and more discrete way than a coin exchange, such as Coinbase. Rather than linking their bank accounts and having to wait 48-72 hours, the entire process usually takes 3-5 minutes and transfers the cryptocurrency to the customer’s wallet quickly. Since the ATM’s installation at the bar a month ago, it has seen its fair amount of use. The biggest explosion of crypto trading happened late last year, and since there has been a decline in the value of cryptocurrencies across the board. Despite this, investors are still following rates closely and using ATMs to instantaneously make the most of their investments. At present, most Bitcoin ATMs are found in convenience stores, petrol stations and food stores. However, The Black Sheep restaurant and bar offers a unique location compared to other Bitcoin ATMs, though the bar currently does not accept Bitcoin. “I liked The Black Sheep, because it’s a busy location with long hours,” said Sabreen Rihan of CryptoDispensers.com, the group that manages The Black Sheep’s ATM. While The Black Sheep may hold the only Bitcoin ATM in Orland Park, the number of machines in the area only continues to grow. There are nearly 2,500 ATMs worldwide, more than 130 in the Chicagoland area, giving it one of the highest concentrations of where to buy Bitcoin worldwide. MOVING SALE! EVERYTHING MUST GO!
