Glossary Of Terms / S-T Stratified glass A glass product consisting of two or more sheets of glass bonded together by an interlayer of either polyvinyl butyral (PVB) or ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) film for use in a variety of safety and security applications. See Laminated Glass. Stress Force per unit area, usually expressed in pounds per square inch. Stress (residual) Any condition of tension or compression existing within the glass. Caused by incomplete annealing or induced temperature gradient during the manufacture of heat treated glass. Structural glazing Glazing system used in place of a conventional joinery or curtain wall. The glass is installed on to structurally supporting sub-frame or glass fin. The glass is retained by the insertion of mechanical fixings or fittings. Structural silicone glazing The use of a silicone sealant for the structural transfer of loads from the glass to its perimeter support system and retention of the glass in the opening. Substance Refers to the thickness of glass expressed in mm. Substrate A base material to which other materials are applied. The surface to which a sealant or adhesive is bonded. Surface compression The compressive stresses present in the surface of glass. This is balanced by the centre of the glass being in tensile stress. Surface position (#) Generally a number denoting which face of a pane of glass or insulating glass unit the coating side or patterned side should face. Sometimes abbreviated to #1, #2, #3 or #4. #1 is the surface to the outside of the building. Can also apply to laminated glass. Sweat Condensation that forms when warm moist air meets cold glass or metal. Tangent A straight line extending from the arc of a curve or bend. Temper (toughen) To heat glass past its softening point and chill rapidly. This results in a surface compressive stress which gives it increased strength. When the glass breaks small fragments of glass are the result. See toughened glass. Glossary Of Terms / T Thermal break A gap or portion of low thermal conductivity in a metal frame. This separates the inner and outer parts of the frame. The thermal break increases the thermal insulation of the frame. Also known as a ‘thermal stress crack’ in glass. Thermally broken When a thermal seal, such as in a Integrated Glass Unit (IGU), is no longer secure. Thermal coefficient of expansion The amount glass expands for every degree C increase in temperature. Thermal conductance (C value) The amount of heat conductance through a specific thickness of material. C Value is determined from K Factor. Thermal conductivity (K factor) The amount of heat transfer per unit area in a given period of time of a homogeneous material. The lower the number, the lower the conductivity. Thermal resistance The relative ability of glass to withstand changes in temperature. Thermal safety assessment A method of assessing the risk of glass breakage from temperature changes caused by location and environmental factors. Thermal stress Stress generated in glass as a consequence of temperature differences across the glass. Thermal transmittance (U value) The overall coefficient of heat transfer. U-Values refer to the total heat flow through the complete heat barrier from room air to outside air. Low numbers indicate greater insulating capability. Thermoplastic A material that can be softened repeatedly by heating. Thermoplastics generally have little or no chemical cross linking. Tight size The actual size of the rebate opening from one side to the other without any clearance. Tin side During the production of float glass, one side of the molten glass comes into contact with a bath of molten tin. Traces of tin or tin oxide are deposited on one surface of the glass which is henceforth known as the “tin side”. Tinted float Glass with colourants added to the basic glass batch that give the glass colour. The colour extends throughout the thickness of the glass.
