Moisturisers: Quest for consumer<br />
satisfaction triggers product <strong>in</strong><strong>no</strong>vation<br />

The quest to satisfy<br />
customers' desire for<br />
more value have triggered<br />
upsurge of <strong>in</strong><strong>no</strong>vative product<br />
changes by producers of<br />
moisturis<strong>in</strong>g creams <strong>in</strong> the<br />
health and beauty market.<br />
This is reflected <strong>in</strong> the<br />
<strong>in</strong>tense market<strong>in</strong>g strategies<br />
adopted by producers to<br />
rek<strong>in</strong>dle consumer loyalty to<br />
their various brands.<br />
The manufacturers have also<br />
accelerated research on<br />
different sk<strong>in</strong> types <strong>in</strong> a bid to<br />
reformulate and produce more<br />
sk<strong>in</strong>-friendly products.<br />
This became necessary when<br />
market <strong>in</strong>sight showed a<br />
susta<strong>in</strong>ed rise <strong>in</strong> population<br />
and grow<strong>in</strong>g desire for smooth<br />
and healthy sk<strong>in</strong>, all <strong>in</strong> a bid<br />
ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> youthful look. The<br />
result is an upsurge <strong>in</strong> demand<br />
for moisturis<strong>in</strong>g creams, which<br />
defied the adverse<br />
macroeco<strong>no</strong>mic situation of the<br />
country.<br />
Consequently, to rema<strong>in</strong><br />
relevant <strong>in</strong> the market, the<br />
manufacturers have started to<br />
adopt critical market<strong>in</strong>g<br />
measures such as repackag<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
redesign<strong>in</strong>g of product shape,<br />
colour and size, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />
additional fragrance for<br />
<strong>in</strong>creased customer attraction<br />
and patronage.<br />
These developments have<br />
however, narrowed contenders<br />
to local and imported<br />
moisturis<strong>in</strong>g creams of Dove,<br />
produced by Unilever Nigeria<br />
Plc; Olay, manufactured by<br />
Procter and Gamble. Others are<br />
imported brands that have<br />
helped to heighten competition<br />
for market share which <strong>in</strong>clude,<br />
Nivea, Avee<strong>no</strong>, CeraVe AM,<br />
ACCA Kappa, Palmer’s Cocoa<br />
Butter, Bliss Body Butter, Aqua<br />
Phor, Amlactia, Rosen cream<br />
among others.<br />
Vanguard’s Companies and<br />
Markets, C&M, f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs reveal<br />
that consumer <strong>in</strong>difference<br />
towards the various products <strong>in</strong><br />
the market, compels them to be<br />
attached to a particular brand.<br />
Consumers’ reaction<br />
However, majority of the<br />
consumers and distributors who<br />
spoke to C&M, <strong>in</strong>dicated<br />
preference for Nivea, Dove,<br />
Avee<strong>no</strong>, Olay, CeraVe and<br />
Aqua Phor for their gentleness<br />
on the sk<strong>in</strong>.<br />
A consumer, Ms. Joseph<strong>in</strong>e<br />
Ibekwe, who <strong>in</strong>dicated<br />
preference for Olay said: “It<br />
goes on smoothly; works well<br />
under makeup, and can even<br />
moisturise comb<strong>in</strong>ation sk<strong>in</strong><br />
type without leav<strong>in</strong>g you<br />
look<strong>in</strong>g sh<strong>in</strong>y. This product is<br />
<strong>no</strong>n-comedogenic (will <strong>no</strong>t<br />
block your pores) and also<br />
comes <strong>in</strong> oil-free and<br />
fragrance-free formulas to suit<br />
oily or sensitive sk<strong>in</strong> types,<br />
respectively.”<br />
A<strong>no</strong>ther consumer, Tayo<br />
Adepetu, said: “Depend<strong>in</strong>g on<br />
your sk<strong>in</strong> type, if you are able<br />
to f<strong>in</strong>d the cream that suits you,<br />
you may say the cream you are<br />
us<strong>in</strong>g is the best. Most creams<br />
are good. I believe <strong>no</strong> company<br />
will like to put out bad product<br />
for consumers to buy.”<br />
Mrs. Joan Iheukwumere,<br />
who operates a cream shop <strong>in</strong><br />
Surulere, said: “If you have<br />
sensitive sk<strong>in</strong>, fragrance-free<br />

market are do<strong>in</strong>g well,<br />
especially those products<br />
which address sk<strong>in</strong> irritation.<br />
He, however, <strong>no</strong>ted that<br />
Nivea, Dove, Avee<strong>no</strong>, Olay,<br />
CeraVe AM are the preferred<br />
moisturis<strong>in</strong>g creams <strong>in</strong> the<br />
market today.<br />
Expert speaks<br />
A dermatologist, who simply<br />
gave her name as Ar<strong>in</strong>ke, who<br />
is <strong>in</strong>to private practice, said:<br />
“Tak<strong>in</strong>g care of your sk<strong>in</strong> does<br />
<strong>no</strong>t have to mean a complicated<br />
beauty rout<strong>in</strong>e: For many<br />
people, us<strong>in</strong>g a good facial<br />
cleanser, followed by a quality<br />
face moisturiser at least once a<br />
day, makes a huge difference.<br />

the less privileged is critical to<br />

Swift to deploy<br />
10,000 hotspots<br />
<strong>in</strong> Lagos<br />
Swift Networks said it is<br />
go<strong>in</strong>g to deploy 10,000<br />
free Wi-Fi across Lagos.<br />
The company said the<br />
deployment will be made<br />

programme, which will run<br />
over a three-year period, is<br />
targeted at nearly 6,000<br />
