South Woodham Focus CONGRATULATIONS h Birthday to my cousin Lola Cherry Cola. Lots of love Darcey (Auntie Holly, Uncle Peter, Henry and James) Millwood WI For our March meeting we had the author Liz Trenow. This is the second time Liz has been our speaker and she is back by popular demand. Liz started her talk by giving us a brief history of how how she got into writing. She worked as a journalist until she retired when she was 58. She enrolled on a M A course at The City of University in London and as part of the course she had to write a novel. Her first novel was called 'The First Telegram' and she was able to get a two book deal with Harper Collins. Her second book was 'The Forgotten Seamstress.’ Her third novel was ‘Poppy Factory’ which was written as part of the centenary of World War 1 and was published by Pan MacMillan. 15 Happy 5th birthday to our beautiful and cheeky ray of sunshine Sienna for the 11th of April. Hope you have a great time at your party. All our love always Mummy, Daddy, Liz has written a new book titled ‘In Love and War’ which was set in Ypres in 1919. It is about the early tourists who visited the battlefields of Ypres to mourn their loved ones. The three main characters are Ruby who is an english widow, Alice the glamorous american who is looking for her brother who joined the canadian forces and Martha a german jewish mother who is looking for her son and how their stories are intertwined. Liz visited Ypres to do her research which took about 2 months. She showed us photos of how it looked after the war, there was nothing just ruins. There were pictures of horse drawn vehicles and a bus with an advert for 'Tours to the Battlefields’. Thomas Cook charged twenty-five guinieas for a tour of the battlefields and many came to mourn and to lay wreaths. CONGRATULATIONS & BIRTHDAYS Please either email messages and photographs to or call in with them to the office at: NEW OFFICE ADDRESS First Floor 1A Trinity Square, South Woodham Ferrers, CM3 5JX. Messages must be with us by 3pm on the Friday before the issue you wish it to be published in. Pictures can be collected following publication. Philip Clayton the chaplin whose nickname was Tubby set up Talbot House where servicemen of all ranks and nationalities could come and stay for a rest and recuperation. Many servicemen never returned home but chose to stay in Belgium. Ypres is now a thriving town and was rebuilt partly because of those early tourists. After her very interesting talk Liz answered questions and we were given the opportunity to buy any autographed copy of her latest book and also to have a chat with her. As the meeting was an Open meeting it was very well attended with lots of visitors including about 40 members of Briscoe WI from Pitesa. Our Forth Coming Events On 22nd May we have an afternoon outing for a behind the scene tour and talk at Chalkwell Auction Rooms On 19th September we have a theatre trip to see Ellio Pace and his Band playing ‘The Billy Joel Songbook' Our next meeting which our AGM is on Wednesday 25th April at Champions manor Hall 7.30pm for a 7.45pm Our trade stall will be Traidcraft.
