South Woodham Focus First Ladies Gala Day at the Jacks Indoor Bowls Centre 21 Left: The winning team from Colchester Bowls Club with Dennis Sheldrake, President of Jacks Indoor Bowls Club and Andy Thomson MBE Below: Claire Wilson receiving the cheque from Jacks President Mr Dennis Sheldrake The first ladies Gala Day at the Jacks Indoor Bowls Centre in the more than 20 years of the club’s history was a huge success. The help support and generosity of so many helped the club to raise £2000 for their chosen charity ‘Little Havens’ children’s hospice. Little Havens officially opened in March 1998. Since then it has cared for over 1000 children with life-limiting illnesses and given vital support to their families. They are the only children’s hospice in Essex. They charge nothing for the care they provide and that’s why having a fund raising event, raising money for the hospice is so very important. Many businesses, large and small, local and distant supported the club through sponsorship. Ladies travelled from all parts of Essex to take part in the tournament, members of Jacks Centre and volunteers from the local community all joined in helping to make the day such a success. It was a big ‘thrill’ for the ladies to have International bowls player Andy Thomson MBE to present the prizes at the end of the day! It takes a lot of planning and hard work to get an event like this off the ground and without all the help and support the club had from everyone it would never have been so successful. It was also good to see that a large number of the gentlemen bowlers from the club gave their time to help make the day go smoothly. Reflecting back on the day it clearly illustrates that a group of dedicated people working toward the same goal can achieve great things.
