Kampala North ROTARY: MAKING A DIFFERENCE Thirty Seventh Edition Kampala North News Apr. 09 - Apr. 15 2018 Welcome back from Easter Holidays! While many of you were enjoying the holiday, on Saturday 31 st March, the Mission Green Presidents were very busy doing what District Governor Kenneth Mugisha has promoted this rotary year: protecting the environment. The Provisional Rotary Club of Kampala City was also in attendance! Many of us say there is a need to protect the environment, but we do not really make any effort to do anything about it. Are you one of these people? Together, we can do something to protect the environment! On the other hand, many environmental problems seem so big that only governments, local authorities or big companies can deal with them. E.g global warming; we need government action to reduce emissions from oil burning power stations and to develop safer sources of power. These require tough regulations and enormous investment. The loss of forests is another problem. Yet another example is waste. .....continued on page 3 Frequently Confused Words In Rotary By Rtn. Stephen Ssendi Here are some of everyday words that confuse us in our Rotary business. Classification, Vocation, Job and Profession: A classification describes the principal activity of the Rotarian e.g. an Engineer who teaches at a University is not classified as “Engineer” but probably as “University Educationist” or “Engineering Tutoring”. This is different from what the Rotarian’s profession is. In this case the Profession is Engineering, the Job is Lecturer at the University. Note that if this same Engineer changes from lecturing to being a University Academic Registrar then the classification would have to change to something else e.g. “Public University Administration”. Club Dues and The Rotary Foundation (TRF) Contributions: Club dues is the money (determined from time to time by the Club) paid to the Club as membership fees. It is mandatory to pay this amount failure of which may lead to termination of membership. TRF contributions on the other hand are non-mandatory contributions made to Rotary Foundation by Rotarians. They may take different forms e.g. PolioPlus, Paul Harrison Fellow (PHF), e.t.c. The contribution is recognized by way of allowing the donor a suffix to their name e.g. PHF, Major Donor, Paul Harris Sustaining Member (PHSM), • Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member: When you give $100 or more • Paul Harris Fellow: When you give $1,000 or more • Multiple Paul Harris Fellow: When you give additional gifts of $1,000 or more • Major Donor: When your cumulative donations reach $10,000. Leave of absence and Excused Absence Excused Absence: Rotarians who have been members in one or more Rotary clubs for at least 20 years AND the total of their years of membership plus their age is 85+ (previously referred to “senior active”)are designated as “exempt,” which means they are no longer subject to Rotary’s attendance requirements. All other members (Nonexempt) members who miss meetings are expected to make up (within two weeks before or after the absence) by attending meetings of another club, or by participating in board-approved Rotary activities. Leaves of Absence: If a member anticipates having to be absent for an extended period because of a personal or work situation, he or she can write to the board to request a leave of absence. Such excused absences shall not extend for longer than twelve months and must comply with conditions and circumstances approved by the board. However, for medical or maternity reasons such leave may be renewed by the board for a period of time beyond the original twelve months. During the leave period, the member continues to pay dues.
