Terra<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> build<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

The overlapp<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> contour l<strong>in</strong>es with <strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>gs map shows <strong>the</strong> first patterns of settlement development. Clearly visible<br />

is <strong>the</strong> location of <strong>the</strong> old town on <strong>the</strong> Jeetzel isl<strong>and</strong>. Strik<strong>in</strong>g is also <strong>the</strong> restriction of any settlement development <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Jeetzel<br />

lowl<strong>and</strong>s on few shallow elevations. These mounds were artificially raised to protect <strong>the</strong> farms from <strong>the</strong> frequent floods, sometimes<br />

last<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> months. The settlement development is ma<strong>in</strong>ly limited to <strong>the</strong> higher areas, but avoids <strong>the</strong> very steep flanks of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Drawehn hills <strong>in</strong> more recent times. An unbuilt strip runs through <strong>the</strong> newer parts of <strong>the</strong> city, whose spatial logic is revealed<br />

through a look at <strong>the</strong> water structure. Contour l<strong>in</strong>es are shown every two metres.<br />
