MESSAGE FROM UTP’s Deputy Vice Chancellor Research & Innovation With everyone’s commitment, dedication and support, we can achieve greater heights together. Be part of this exciting journey as we move into the era of Global Prominence. T he research and innovation (R&I) landscape around the world has been evolving rapidly with technological innovation being the key driver for Institutes of Higher Learning as they move forward in the 21st Century. UTP is moving along in this pathway by continuously reviewing its research direction and enhancing the research ecosystem in support of the University’s Phase 5 (2017 – 2021) aspiration towards Global Prominence. The University envisions its R&I to propel towards greater success by developing and innovating new technologies, bringing technologies to the industries and benefitting communities at large through commercialisation and entrepreneurial activities. Elevating research excellence requires the right-balanced philosophy of being agile and adaptive to the trending environment and in remaining contemporary and modern. We need to address the research direction and ecosystem of the university with the 3P concept of (i) Preserving the winning formula; (ii) Pushing the boundaries; and (iii) Positioning UTP’s R&I towards Global Prominence. Hopefully this concept will be an aspiration for us to continue achieving global prominence with drive and determination. The recently concluded PACEsetter Lab has developed a comprehensive strategic plan for the University’s R&I direction, aspiring to become a globally prominent university pacesetter. On top of this, the proposed enhancement to the existing R&I ecosystem will position UTP amongst other elite and renowned universities around the world. The university is committed to actively contribute to the national and global research agenda with the aim towards achieving global prominence through focused execution and creating results that matter. The upward trajectory needs to continue and we should never lose sight of the pursuit of excellence. With everyone’s commitment, dedication and support, we can achieve greater heights together. Be part of this exciting journey as we move into the era of Global Prominence. Professor Ir Dr Mohd Shahir Liew Deputy Vice Chancellor, Research and Innovation UTP RESEARCH NEWSLETTER 3
