ACADEMIC OF THE YEAR Professor Dr Abd Rashid Abd Aziz P rofessor Dr Abd Rashid Abd Aziz marked 20 years of service at UTP in 2016. His contributions to the development of UTP has culminated in the recent “Outstanding Academic of the Year” award which he received during the Quality Day 2016 event. Starting as a lecturer with a fresh PhD in Mechanical Engineering (ME) from University of Miami in Florida, USA, he became the first Programme Head of ME in 1999, the first Director of Green Technology MOR in 2006, and the first Deputy Vice Chancellor of Research in 2011. His passion since the beginning of joining UTP has always been in research. He led UTP’s first large multi-institutional project in UTP in 2003 and subsequently formed the first research centre in UTP which he later named Centre for Automotive Research & Electrical Mobility (CAREM). He has been the Head of CAREM since 2005 and has been leading several national and international projects in internal combustion engines, alternative fuels as well as on novel power generation involving funding to a tune of RM19M over the last twelve years. Current researchers in UTP are enjoying the infrastructure, facilities and support which was the results and outcome of the struggles that early researchers in UTP have to bear with and go through. However, being early in the service has a few advantages. One of which was cherished dearly by Professor Dr Rashid is the camaraderie and the team spirit among the staff. The team spirit is still present till today but the camaraderie is difficult to maintain with the ever growing population of UTP. Professor Dr Rashid believes that success is a team effort and he attributes his success to the support he received from many parties within and outside of UTP. This includes his family, friends and everyone who is part of UTP, then and now. On this occasion, he would like to make a special tribute to his wife, Dr Suzana Said, for being his pillar of strength and solace, for which he seeks comfort and perseverance. Professor Dr Rashid’s philosophy in life is “Passion, Patience and Persistence” or better known as 3-P’s. RESEARCH ACHIEVEMENTS InMotion: Innovative Teaching and Learning Strategies in Open Modelling and Simulation Environment for Student-Centred Engineering Education By: Ir Dr Mohd Zulhilmi Paiz Ismadi, Dr Jundika Candra Kurnia, Ir Dr Suhaimi Hassan, Assoc Prof Ir Dr Shaharin Anwar Sulaiman, Assoc Prof Ir Dr Mokhtar Awang, Assoc Prof Ir Dr Zuhairi Baharudin, Assoc Prof Dr Masri Baharom, Assoc Prof Dr Puteri Sri Melor Megat Yusoff, Prof Ir Dr Abd Rashid Abd Aziz, Assoc Prof Dr Ainul Akmar Mokhtar I nMotion is a collaborative project among Malaysian, Russian and European universities funded by the Erasmus+ Programme. The project is aimed at improving the quality of education and teaching according to the priorities established in the Bucharest and Yerevan Communiqués and to meet the demands of Strategic Framework for European Cooperation in Education and Training (ET2020). Primarily, the collective outcomes of the project are: Updated Curricula in Computer Modelling and Simulation in Engineering (CMSE) with new Syllabi and educational content as fundamental educational programme for three level educational model and development of guidelines for Long Life Learning. Development of a common approach for student-centred learning in the use of modern computer simulation packages and tools for solving innovative engineering problems for various application areas. Introduction of eScience approach and research-based learning; development of eLearning Modules based on innovative teaching strategies and creative learning approaches using workflow modelling tools and Blended Learning model based on the best ICT solutions. Elaboration and implementation of Open Modelling and Simulation Environment platform (OMSE), and online training services of the new generation (Massive Open Online Courses) for qualitative improvement of the engineering education process and academic workflow support among universities and stakeholders across the PC and EU. UTP plays a significant role in contributing to the development of guidelines for MATLAB/ Simulink and Rand Modelling Design (RMD) for CMSE development. These guidelines are integrated in the syllabus, teaching and learning resources for the online learning platform, thus providing enhanced learning environment to the students. Virtual laboratories and mini project will also be conducted which consist of groups of mixed students from partner universities. UTP RESEARCH NEWSLETTER 7
