The Rep reported (“On wa r n i n g ” March 16) that Eskom had published a notice of intent to restrict the electricity supply to the area due to an unpaid account of R44-million. The notice indicated that such restrictions would start from April 3, with power being cut for six hours per day during the week and eight hours on weekends. If the account remained unpaid, the cuts would be escalated to 14 hours per day. E s ko m ’s decision to delay the power cuts hinges on a report-back from a multi-disciplinary team which was established at a meeting with Eastern Cape Premier Phumulo Masualle recently. Responding to queries this week, Eskom spokesman Zama Mpondwana confirmed that the power utility would not be interrupting the electricity from April 3 as government was being proactive in finding solutions to the problem. The interdepartmental team which is led by the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) was established to assess and investigate issues that have plagued the local authority and was expected to report back to the MEC for Cogta, Fikile Xasa, last Fr i d ay. OTP spokesman Sonwabo Mbananga said the Cogta-led multi-disciplinary team included representatives from Eskom, EMLM, the Chris Hani District Municipality, the national department of water and sanitation and various other stakeholders which were aiming to find plausible solutions to the continuous electricity woes in Komani. “The meeting resolved that there needed to be a coordinated effort to tackle the issues of EMLM. The team would develop a concrete action and possible funding instruments to remedy the situation. The continuous power failures in the municipality have caused sub-stations to malfunction. The sub-stations are not protected from lightning and the ailing infrastructure are matters being discussed. The EMLM problem will also be placed on the OTP’s Small Town Revitalisation programme which looks into infrastructure upgrades.” The ailing electricity network had left residents in the dark for lengthy periods with local businesses incurring heavy losses. On Sunday, a fault was detected in a substation in Ebden Street which resulted in the whole town being switched off for repairs. Electricity outages in EMLM have also affected water provision in the district as pump stations require power to pump water. In last year’s electricity emergency projects report compiled by the municipal infrastructure support unit, it was indicated that the EMLM needed R78-million to refurbish its electricity EMLM power reprieve infrastructure network. The report i n d i c at e d that some components in the municipality’s electricity network had reached the end of their lifespan and some required immediate maintenance.
